I find lots of sea shells on my beach walks and I’ve been dying to create a mirror covered in sea shells. How to make a shell mirror? First I needed to find an inexpensive mirror, so I hit a bunch of thrift shops in search of something that would fit on the wall I wanted to hang the mirror on.
I was hoping for an oval mirror but I was having a really hard time finding one with the correct dimension for the wall I wanted to hang the mirror on. The mirror I eventually found was a rectangle shape and covered with blue and white porcelain tile. I knew I wanted to cover all of the tile underneath so I made a “base” layer of scallop shells and then layered more shells to cover the entire frame.
I used E6000 glue and I would do it again! My only gripe was the very thin “strings” that it leaves behind when doing this type of craft so I had to go back with tweezers and remove all those strings.
I am really happy with the way the mirror turned out and now I want to cover more things with shells! I see some sort of jewelry box or a picture frame project in my future!

okay i've done a lot of talking about
crafts and things that i might do with
some of the shelves that i
have collected so i figured it was time
to start the mirror project it took me a
while to find
this mirror they're kind of expensive we
have a lot of thrift stores down here so
there's no reason i wouldn't be able to
find one in the thrift store
that fit on the wall that i wanted to
hang it so i did manage to find this
what it is though is it's got some
porcelain tile that's been cracked and
kind of put
onto the frame i'm gonna just put the
shells on top of it i'm just gonna glue
right over it
and what i'm thinking is i'm going to
take scallops
and cover it as much as i can as a base
to try to cover the blue because that's
going to drive me crazy
and i figured i can't paint it because
then
i'm relying on the paint to stick to the
glue to stick to the shell
so i'm just going to glue directly on
here
um but before i quite get into the
technique the reason i've been keeping
the kind of broken shells is for for
this very reason to go onto a project
like this
like i have this beautiful moon snail i
mean it's
it's stunning but it's all chipped and
that it's just me yeah look everybody
does their thing but that just bothers
me but
wouldn't it be wonderful if i could use
it in some sort of craft and kind of
cover that so
i don't know if i'm going to be able to
actually use this one
these are the scallops that i'm going to
try to lay down when i went to santa
belle
that's i went because i wanted to get
scallops so i can lay down a layer
underneath and then glue on top of that
and then i have been collecting for a
while just shows that are broken
i mean i saw this crown con come on what
about crazy but
it is kind of pitted it does it's not
perfect i mean i guess i you know
i could sell it but we'll see if it can
make it into this project
so these are all shells that i've deemed
to be somehow inferior
um they're faded they're chipped they're
not completely whole they're missing
pieces or
maybe i just decided like this channel
duck clam there's nothing wrong with it
but they're pretty much all over the
place so it can be
you know this one doesn't need to be or
that one doesn't need to be damaged in
order for me to use it
i have a problem putting glue on perfect
show so if there's a shell that looks
fantastic actually this nutmeg actually
looks pretty fantastic but
you know he's got a i don't know there's
actually nothing wrong with that nutmeg
so maybe i won't put them on i'm a nut
but this one okay so you have here you
see how that's you're going to got that
that chipped area there so
that's something that i would prefer to
use on a type of craft
and then there's yeah this is not like
the best apple mirrors i've ever seen
wrong with it but it's not perfect so
these are the kind of shells that i can
bring myself to put glue on them even
this gotti nautica but
its color is almost completely gone
so that's what i've been putting these
shells to the side for then i have my
palette of scallops and so i'm just
going to kind of see how this works
and i'll get started and yeah i'll be
coming back and giving you a progress
update
and one other i forgot to mention i'm
using e6000 flexible
paintable white glue industrial strength
glue so
i'll let you know what i think of this
good thing i got that newspaper down
i'll let you know how this works out as
we're going along as well
[Music]
okay for the most part i've got the
entire frame covered with the scallops
and i'm going to
go back in and just kind of place
the other shelves the other quote
unquote not perfect shells
in areas around the frame to kind of
fill
in the blue part because that's what i'm
trying to do i'm trying to make sure
that i can't see that blue part plus i
really really like the way that that
layered shells look kind of like all
jumbled together
so i want to start on that and we'll see
what that looks like
[Music]
[Music]
all right what i have decided is i'm
going to start
putting actually these bigger pieces on
the bigger shelves
i'm going to glue those on first and
then go back
and fill in all the little areas because
doing it the opposite way i don't think
it's going to work so great for me so
i'm still at it i'll we'll see how the
progress goes
okay i'm really happy with the way this
is coming out
i've pretty much finished this corner
and you can kind of see because we don't
see any blue
so there's no blue kind of down here
but around this corner we start seeing
that the tile peek through again
you can kind of kind of see a little bit
of it so i am going to completely
cover all the blue like i said
really happy with the way this is
working out and once this is
you know hung at the last look i'm going
to give you i'm going to finish this i'm
going to install it and then we'll see
what the final product looks like
so here is the final frame i
love it i really do i love the all the
different colors all the different
shells all the different layers
and because i was keeping ones that were
you know in my opinion inferior
um i was able to kind of turn them and
only reveal that
side was nice look i got to use that
giant moon snail there on the left
and so all these other ones they might
have been imperfect or maybe they were
cracked and i just
exposed them anyway and that that nutmeg
that i thought was too perfect to use he
got in there too
so i just i really absolutely love this
project the e6000
i liked it it was repositionable but it
did leave
like weird little stringy things all
over the place so i needed to go back
and pick those off but this is where i'm
going to hang it you'll see
my gumball machine filled with shells
there in the background
that was literally the only other shell
project i've ever really tackled
so super excited about the way this came
out thank you patreons
thank you viewers thank all of you you
guys are truly the best
again leave me a comment let me know
what you would have done maybe
differently or if you have any
suggestions or something that for next
time i can maybe do a little bit
different
i hope you enjoyed my little crafty
video and i'll see you again on sunday
