12 Amazing Health Benefits of Taking Berberine Every Day
1.
Weight Loss
The main reason that people take berberine is to help them lose weight and burn body
fat faster when dieting.
This is known as a natural, safer alternative to weight loss drugs like Ozempic.
Berberine is actually a yellow pigment taken from several plants such as golden seal, oregano
When you take this in the form of a supplement, it helps your cells to burn fat better by
activating a certain enzyme called AMPK in your body.
This lowers your blood sugars and reduces insulin resistance for faster weight loss.
Later in the video I'll talk about the best dosages and supplements.
2.
Managing Diabetes
Berberine is also a fantastic supplement for type 2 diabetic patients to take, as it helps
to control blood sugars.
Berberine blocks certain enzymes like alpha glucosidase which slows down the breakdown
of carbohydrates when you eat them.
Basically this helps to release sugar more slowly into your bloodstream.
It also helps the blood sugar go into your cells, therefore removing it from your blood
and preventing diabetes complications like tissue death, nerve problems, eye disorders
etc.
3.
Gut Health
Berberine also goes well beyond just improving your blood sugars.
It also helps to encourage the growth of friendly bacteria in your gut such as lactobacillus
and bifidobacteria.
What's interesting though is that it also blocks bad bacteria and bad microbes from
spreading through your gut, like E.coli or Candida.
If you have gut problems like bloating or constipation, this supplement will help to
correct the balance over time, along with eating more probiotics of course.
And you can find more information on the best foods for gut health in my video titled the
best 8 probiotic foods in the world.
4.
Anti-Aging
Studies show that berberine can also activate sirtuin proteins in the body.
These are linked to better ageing and an increased lifespan.
Berberine's antioxidant effect helps to protect your cells against free radical damage, so
that you can live a longer, healthier and happier life.
5.
Improving Brain Function
By controlling blood sugars and activating vitamin D receptors, berberine also helps
to prevent Alzheimer's disease and other brain related diseases as well.
Many people report that taking this has improved brain function and even reversed Alzheimer's
disease in their elder relatives.
When I personally take this, I notice that I can think more clearly, as I have better
access to my memories and can make connections faster when I'm thinking about writing videos
like this.
This is probably because berberine can cross the blood brain barrier to effectively improve
brain health.
6.
Anxiety and Depression
High levels of cortisol in the bloodstream can cause you to feel stressed, anxious or
depressed over time.
However taking berberine 3 times per day helps to balance the release of cortisol into your
blood by supporting your hypothalamus and adrenal glands.
This can improve your mood, make you feel calmer, less tight and rigid, and it also
helps to boost the happy hormone called serotonin and also dopamine.
Again, you can find more info on lowering cortisol and anxiety in my other videos.
7.
Anti-Cancer
Another special property of berberine is its ability to help destroy cancer cells by activating
programmed cell death.
It can also boost antioxidant enzymes in your body like glutathione peroxidase to reverse
cellular damage and prevent other chronic diseases as well.
Berberine is compatible to use alongside traditional cancer treatment medications to help fight
against this awful disease, but please always check with your doctor to check for interactions
whenever you are taking existing medications.
8.
Liver Repair
If you are overweight around your belly region, you are also highly likely to have a fatty
liver.
Berberine can help to reduce the fat that's stored in your liver by activating AMPK enzymes,
which also help damage liver tissue to repair itself by lowering inflammation.
By the way, some other great herbs that are good for your liver include bitter melon,
milk thistle and green tea.
Introducing more of these into your supplement stack can help to repair your liver and help
it to process fats, sugars and toxins more efficiently.
9.
Boosts Immunity
Did you know that berberine can also help to activate Vitamin D in your body when you
expose your skin to sunlight, or when you take a Vitamin D supplement.
This can improve the function of your immune system to help your body fight and resist
infections and diseases.
Studies also suggest that berberine can speed up T-cells and natural killer cells to help
your body defend against viruses, bacteria and other pathogens.
10.
Strengthens Bones
By boosting the active form of Vitamin D in your body, berberine is also helpful in strengthening
the bones.
Berberine can activate certain genes that promote the activity of osteoblasts.
These are the cells that build your bone tissue.
These effects help to bring in minerals like calcium to make your bones harder, and can
help to treat osteoporosis and brittle bones.
I also recommend magnesium glycinate if you have this bone loss, to further help drive
calcium into the bone.
11.
Is Hormone Balance
By helping reverse insulin resistance and activating AMPK, berberine can help to keep
hormones balanced, particularly in women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, or
heavy periods.
Berberine can naturally lower testosterone levels in women and help to balance out estrogen.
This is also very effective for maintaining normal testosterone levels in men, along with
some other great herbs like maca root and dim.
And 12.
Is Heart and Artery Health
Studies also show that the regular use of berberine lowers LDL cholesterol and raises
HDL cholesterol by promoting the excretion of bile acids from the liver and gallbladder.
This can also effectively shrink plaque that has formed on the inside layer of the arteries,
and helps the arteries to vasodilate and widen for better blood flow.
This may prevent heart attacks, blood clots, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular
diseases.
And I'd also like to list the additional benefits, which include improving insulin
sensitivity to help prevent against nerve damage from high blood sugars.
It can also reverse damage to the DNA in the mitochondria to prevent chronic diseases.
Berberine can help your body to recover from drug or alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
And it's also been shown to reduce breakouts of acne, psoriasis and eczema on the skin,
and is often used in external skin creams.
Now let's take a look at the daily dosages that you'd want to use for berberine.
The standard recommendation is to take 500mg of berberine hydrochloride 3 times per day,
that's a total of 1500mg.
Spread these out morning, noon and night to help make your cells more sensitive to insulin
and to receive many of the benefits that I've discussed in this video.
Another form of berberine is also called dihydroberberine, which has a better absorption rate in the
body by up to 3-5 times.
So if you can get your hands on this type, you'd only need around 100-200mg per day
as it's much more bioavailable.
Side Effects
Since berberine is a natural alkaloid found in plants, it's considered safe and well
tolerated.
However, in rare cases it may cause a little diarrhoea, cramping or nausea.
These effects are usually very mild, and they tend to go away by reducing the dose.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid berberine, or if you're taking blood thinners,
blood pressure drugs or diabetes medication, consult with your doctor before using this
as it may double the strength of your medication.
Other Healing Herbs
Since the main benefit of berberine is activating the enzyme AMPK, you may also be interested
that there are some other herbal extracts which have similar effects.
These include panax ginseng, green tea, resveratrol and curcumin.
All of these plants and extracts help to regulate your blood sugar levels and reverse insulin
resistance to support many of the benefits discussed today.
