And you say tomato, I say potato. Scientists say that's a lot more correct than it seems. Biologists have traced the origins of the potato back 9 million years to a tomato plant. Back then, an ancient wild tomato plant interbred with a potato-like plant called a tuberosum. It's not as out there as it seems, since both plants split from the same ancestor 5 million years prior. That cross-pollination gave the ancient potato something its modern version is known for. It's tubers. That's the part we eat. Before that, it didn't have a tuber. The modification helped potatoes thrive because tubers helped the plant store nutrients. The new finding was published in the journal Cell.
