May Day – May 1st, 2020
This Holiday is celebrated around the world, such as Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities. In other countries, it is a celebration of many types of spring flowers, many that bloom in your own backyard.
On 1 May 1561, King Charles IX of France received a lily of the valley as a lucky charm.
In communist and socialist countries, it is a celebration for the workers.
In the United States, it is not a national holiday except in Hawaii and it is called “Lei Day,” there.
Cinco de Mayo – May 5
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified the defeat of European colonial power and a victory for the Mexican people. This battle was the beginning of Cinco de Mayo.
It is celebrated by Mexicans and especially the Hispanic Community in the US. It is a time of song, dance, partying with delicious Mexican food and drink, and a time to be proud of their Hispanic descent.
Mother’s Day – May 10
The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908, in Philadelphia
When you are hurt, or not feeling well....there is no one else that can help you more than Mom.
So, if you cannot go out and celebrate Mother's Day, make it special for her. If you don’t have a Mother, make it special for your Grandmother, Sister, or favorite Aunt or any woman that has helped you in any way by being there for you!
First and foremost, spend time with her. If you absolutely cannot be there, take time for a long phone call or a video chat over the computer.
Flowers, cards, candy, and gifts are all part of the day. But Mom wants to hear from you more than anything else!
Buddhist Vesak – Sunday, May 19
Vesak is one of the most important Buddhist festivals. The date of Vesak changes each year as it takes place at the time of the first full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha, which usually falls in May or early June.
It is a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists and some Hindus on different days in many Asian countries from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam to name a few.
Many Buddhists will go to their local temple. It is also a time to reflect on his teachings and what it means to be Buddhist.
Many will do good deeds, take part in meditation, bring offerings to the temple, and share food with people. They take part in processions and wear special white clothes to mark the occasion.
In Buddhism, the lotus flower also symbolizes fortune. It grows in muddy water. The lotus flower is capable of growing itself, rising and blooming above the murk to achieve the ultimate enlightenment. A white lotus flower refers to the purity of the mind and the spirit. The pink lotus flower represents Buddha, his history, and his legend. ... The gold or yellow lotus flower represents the gaining of enlightenment.
Buddha is a title, rather than a name, which means the enlightened or awakened one.
Memorial Day is officially celebrated on the last Monday during the month of May. It is dedicated to servicemen and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away.
Memorial Day observance dates back to 1865 at the end of the Civil War.
Many towns and cities have a Memorial Day Parade. Some people visit the cemeteries to honor and remember our servicemen or a time to remember loved ones who have passed away.
But this year with the Coronavirus pandemic taking its toll on the country, we will bow our heads and remember all of the people who we have lost this year to the Coronavirus.
