Hello friends! Welcome to the forests of the Pacific Northwest where life can get very busy
for our woodland friends. In today's non-fiction story, we will learn about beavers, also known as
nature's engineers. Beavers are amazing animals that live near rivers, ponds, and lakes. They
are known as nature's engineers because of their incredible ability to build dams and lodges.
Beavers are medium-sized mammals with thick ground fur to keep them warm and a flat,
wide tail that helps them swim and balance. They also have sharp teeth that never stop growing,
which are perfect for chewing on wood. And guess what? Their teeth are orange.
A beaver's teeth is covered in a special iron coating that makes them extra strong,
just like the enamel on your teeth. Beavers build dams to slow down rivers and create ponds.
Why? They need calm water to keep their homes, called lodges, safe from predators like wolves
or bears. When a beaver sees a predator coming, they will use their tails to slap on the water
to warn others of the incoming danger. To build a dam, beavers cut down trees with their strong
teeth and drag the branches to the water. They stack the wood and fill in the gaps with mud and
stones. It's like building a giant puzzle. A beaver lodge is a special kind of home.
It looks like a pile of sticks in the middle of the water. The lodge has two main rooms,
one for sleeping and another for storing food. Beavers enter through underwater tunnels,
which keeps them safe from predators. Each beaver dam has a kitchen, pantry,
and bedroom, just like in a regular home. When they build dams, their ponds become homes for
other animals, like fish, frogs, ducks, and insects. These ponds also help clean the water
and prevent flooding downstream. Beavers don't just help themselves, they help the whole environment,
and they are busier at night, which makes them nocturnal. Beavers act as little helpers for the
planet. Beavers are truly amazing animals. They remind us how even small creatures can make a big
difference. So, the next time you see a pond or a lodge, think of the busy beavers working hard
to shape nature's landscape. And always remember this, you may be small, but it doesn't matter.
You can make a world of difference right in your own neighborhood.
