Elon Musk revealed Why SpaceX CUT Starship B13's Raptor Nozzle? Here’s what happened…
Booster 13’s aft section has returned to Starbase, bringing with it a key discovery. Though it may seem minor, this component has yielded crucial insights. Notably, one of the outer Raptor engine nozzles appears to have been intentionally cut—an action tied to persistent design challenges.
This finding highlights ongoing issues with Raptor engines that have surfaced across multiple tests. Why was the nozzle cut? What caused the issue? And how will SpaceX respond?
We break it all down in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Elon Musk revealed Why SpaceX CUT Starship B13's Raptor Nozzle? Here’s what happened…
It is clear that SpaceX is continuing its work to recover and analyze Starship hardware, with the most recent effort focused on the aft section of Booster 13. After being retrieved, this segment was transported to the port and later moved to the Massey Test Site for further inspection and analysis. This development is significant because the aft section houses many critical systems, especially those related to the propulsion structure.
Throughout the recovery and transportation process, the engines were kept under a blue protective covering. However, prior to this, it had already been observed that some of the engine nozzles appeared to be visibly warped. Additionally, certain protective panels located in the upper areas of the aft section were missing entirely.

Initially, it was reasonable to assume that these damages had resulted from the stresses of flight, along with the corrosive effects of prolonged exposure to seawater. However, a more recent observation has uncovered a very specific and unusual detail that has since sparked new discussions regarding this booster’s condition.
One of the nozzles from an outer ring engine had clearly been cut. This particular engine was located near several other engines with visibly distorted nozzles, which suggests that it may have suffered similar damage. Based on the current set of images taken of this section, it is not entirely clear when this nozzle was cut. What we do know is that by the time it was covered with the blue cloth, the cut had already been made. My personal assessment is that the cut was performed at the same time that crews removed other significantly damaged parts from the upper side of the aft section.
