Bremen: The Town Hall and the Roland – A Stronghold of Civil Freedom

They are the same age and have held their place in the city centre for exactly 600 years: Bremen's town hall and Roland.

The stone giant is probably the oldest free-standing monumental figure in Germany. Is it thanks to the protection of his shield that Bremen's town hall with its magnificent Renaissance façade has escaped destruction to this day? In any case, the Roland figure was a sign of market freedom in the Middle Ages and a symbol of independence. And Bremen was always mindful of and proud of this.

UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the ""Heritage of Mankind"" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” shows these places in impressive images.
