How to Roller Skate

Okay, I'm parked. I have my skates on. I need to put sunscreen on, but I have to pee so bad.
I feel like there are bathrooms on the trail. I walked the trail last week with my friend,
and I feel like I saw bathrooms. We didn't stop at them. But I know once I start skating,
I'll be okay, but I'm fearful of when I get back to the car because then I'm gonna have to pee
so bad. Also, if you're wondering what this is on my nose, I got a mole taken off yesterday,
and hence the hat and the sunscreen because protect your skin. It's not fun to have moles
removed every year. Okay, I can do this. Putting sunscreen on. I'm really curious how long it's
gonna take me because it took Rachel and I, I'll have to look at my watch, took us this long,
but after seeing these roads, I was like, oh, so skatable. One thing that I will warn you against,
which I just saw, I was gonna put AirPods in and listen to a podcast. And then I was like,
maybe not because there was a car. Cars can drive on here. Like it's big enough for cars.
They're allowed to cross through. But I saw a truck just like blow by and I was like, I'm not
gonna have AirPods in and have someone come up behind me and may not see them or hear them.
And I was like, yeah, not it. I have not trail skated in a very long time.
Trail skating, street skating, very, very different from skating at a skating rink or even
skating on the blacktop or on a sidewalk. Very different. The feeling under your feet, if you
are new to trail skating, be prepared for your feet to get very tired. The vibration from the
street wears your feet out really fast. I oiled my bearings before I came here because one of
my bearings I thought was frozen. My bearing was not turning. It wasn't rotating my wheel.
And so I oiled my bearings and happy to say I'm at least going this fast.
My heart rate's at 144. Doing good. My mom asked me if I was going to meet her at the gym today.
I was like, no. My legs are still tired from leg day two days ago.
They were so sore yesterday. They're worse today. And of course, I'm like, well, I know they're not
going to hurt when I'm skating. And I was right. All of my ailments go away when I skate. And I
don't know if it's just like a mental thing from having competed for so many years that like
if you were in pain too bad, it really doesn't matter. Can't do anything about it because
you have to perform, you have to compete. I don't know. Is this the bathroom?
There's a porta potty. I can move it, I think.
See, there's a truck behind me. It's scary. I set my watch to indoor skating because that's
the only skating one. I wish I could see how fast I was going. Apple, if you're listening,
please make an outdoor skating one. 15 miles per hour.
Don't think I'm going faster than that. Oh, there's rocks over here. I don't like that.
I know my wheels will go over these rocks, but still not down to take any chances.
Sorry if I'm not looking at you. I can't. We're getting to the point where my hair,
when it comes across, getting stuck to my neck. That means we're doing good.
Fellow person on wheels. Okay, I'm tired. When you're out skating and you realize
you are going one way, you have to come back the other way. Damn it. I think in total,
this is like three and a half miles there and back. Oh, I'm downhill now.
Roller skates make people happy. I love that. All the bikers,
they just put a little smile on their face. Okay, there's a dog. You don't like me or not?
Get in here. You got to be careful around dogs. They either love skates and they want to get them
and play, or they hate skates and want to get them and destroy. I don't know why I thought
this was going to be such a breeze. Like it was going to be so easy. It's not. I could have just
cruised and not pushed that hard, but I was really curious how far I could go in about 10 minutes.
And it's been 12 and a half minutes. My heart rate's at 160. I feel like I'm about where
Rachel and I turned around. Hello. Speaking friends. Yeah, we didn't go over here.
This is like very enclosed. I got to be getting to the end of this side. The whole loop
is something like 10 miles. Taylor was like, are you going to do the whole loop? And I was like,
no, because I don't know what that side looks like yet. I need to like scope it out.
Also, I don't want to do 10 and a half miles. Okay. Wait, that is going uphill. Do I want to
go uphill? I got to make a decision. I still have to pee. I want to go up here just to see what's
up here. But then bombing this is going to be really fast. They put this big hill at the end
of it. Yeah, we did not go up here. What's up here? There's water. That won't help me. Okay.
I'm going to skate my way back, but I have to pee so bad. So I'm going to get in my car after,
drive to a coffee shop, use the bathroom, probably get a coffee. Okay. Wish me luck.
All right. I got to include me bombing this hill because it is steep. Oh, the paint is slippery.
He was honking at me like, bitch, you better move.
One last thing. If you are a beginner and you want to come skate at Back Bay,
only do the very beginning of the trail, like from the Dunes Recreation, like the first
quarter mile, maybe. Because past that, it gets a little bit sketchy if you're new.
All right. 38 minutes. I'm tired. I almost missed the seat. I'm going to take my skates off
and I'm going to go find a restroom and blow my nose. And I will see you all next week.
