Daily recaps from my 2022 Svalbard photography expedition with Natural World Safaris in early May. The spring season is absolutely incredible for capturing images of the pristine snow covered landscape and experiencing the Arctic wildlife.
Good morning guys, it is an early start here in Reykjavik. I'm just getting ready to go on a long
mission to the north. Everything packed, I have two checked bags, it's going to be a good time.
So excited to be back in Svalbard, had a nice little journey from Iceland,
very snowy and beautiful, getting ready for an amazing expedition on kinfish.
Just had some amazing apple cake and finally ready to go on the boat.
Just jumped in a taxi, I'm gonna go to the harbour. Made it to the kinfish.
Stoked to finally be back on board kinfish, it's been a couple of years.
Amazing boat, really excited for our next few days sailing around in the ice.
One thing I really love about this boat is there's only space for 12 passengers,
which means it's a very small and intimate experience when we go on expedition.
You can see in the back some of these massive cruise ships with upwards of 100 guests,
and it's just a different dynamic. I really love these small trips.
Making some good progress on our search for bears. We've seen a pixel bear far off in the distance,
nothing else yet, but quite a few seals and some really solid ice.
We can only hope something comes up soon.
We just found our first polar bear and it was an amazing experience.
All my gear ready to go.
Hey guys, just jumping back to my studio for a second as I wanted to share with you
my new editing masterclass, and if you've ever been interested to know how I edit my photos,
specifically how I edit the photos in this video,
you can see all the information in the link in the description.
All right, back to the Arctic.
It's very nice to see this infinite world of ice again.
We are working our way through it. We have been for around eight or nine hours now,
just scouting, continuing the same schedule as always,
looking for things and hopefully something to report soon.
So it's now almost midnight, still bright as ever.
It's very strange to get used to life with 24 hours of light
and not like Iceland, this is like actual daylight all day.
Let's play Count Dolores. There, there, there, there and there.
It's all much of a muchness whichever direction we go,
so we might as well just head into the fast ice and I think it'll be really cool then
to look back and see kinfish all along the edge and we'll just do a little loop and come back.
Some polar bear tracks going into a seal hole.
Polar bear footprint.
Polar bear tracks leading directly to where we came from.
Currently out on the fast ice, which is a surreal experience.
We are in the home of the polar bear.
Cool to see polar bear tracks close up,
see where they've been searching for seals and just be a polar bear for a little minute.
Woke up to snowfall, first snowfall of the trip, very beautiful.
Last night we had some pretty rough seas and big waves smashing over the front of the boat.
Now we've woken up and everything is covered in ice and I mean everything outside on the
boat is covered in ice.
Right now the guys are trying to get rid of it, it's a little bit dangerous.
Okay then.
We've been looking for a bearded seal the whole trip,
finally found one and got a nice front on angle with the ice, looks amazing.
We've just had an incredible polar bear encounter going after two walrus and now
there's a whole group of walrus on a little rock and he's going to try and go for all of them.
So we're back in the ice fjord on the way to Longyearbyen and it is our final night
of the voyage.
We have anchored up to the fast ice right beside a beautiful glacier and we're having
a barbecue to celebrate this insane polar bear experience encounter that we had today.
Some really really beautiful photos and interesting behaviours that
have I guess not often been seen in the way that we saw them.
