SpaceX's Starship Recovered SHOCKED China...Here's what Elon Musk did!
SpaceX just pulled a wrecked Starship Booster out of the ocean… and China should be paying close attention.
Booster 13, thought to be lost to the sea, has been recovered, and it's packed with secrets. Secrets that China’s Starship clones might never get their hands on.
But while China races to replicate SpaceX's success, Booster 13’s return might just throw a wrench in their imitation game.
What does this wreck reveal about Starship’s evolution? And why is this a silent blow to China’s bold ambitions?
Strap in, and in today's Techmap episode, we’re diving into the tech, the tension, and the truth behind SpaceX’s latest sea recovery and why it matters more than you think.
SpaceX's Starship Recovered SHOCKED China...Here's what Elon Musk did!
It has been eight months since Starship Flight 6, and on July 20, Elon Musk announced on X that Booster 13, the hardware from Flight 6, had been recovered from the sea.
Flight 6 can be considered a notably successful test flight. On November 19, 2024, at 4 pm CST, both Booster 13 and Ship 31 launched from Pad A. The stack appeared to lift off the pad more quickly than previous flights, likely because SpaceX operated their Raptor 2 engines at full thrust instead of the prior 90% level. Booster 13 ascended flawlessly with all 33 engines functioning. At stage separation, the command “Go for Catch” was given. Following separation, Ship 31 ignited all six engines and proceeded toward space. After the boost backburn shutdown, SpaceX issued a “Booster Offshore Divert” call, indicating an issue with either the booster or the tower, which led to aborting the catch attempt. Booster 13 then executed a soft landing in the water, but tipped over post-touchdown, resulting in the methane tank exploding upon contact with the water.

Following the booster’s destruction in the Gulf of Mexico, Ship 31 continued into its coast phase, traveling through the night. At the expected time, it performed an in-space relight using a single Sea Level Raptor for approximately one second. Afterward, the vehicle entered reentry, experiencing burn-through on at least one forward flap. Nonetheless, despite using the older-style heat shield, Ship 31 survived reentry and softly splashed down in the Indian Ocean. Elon Musk commented,
“Well, the fairing did blow up when the ship fell over after landing in the water (as expected).”
Booster 13’s post-landing explosion triggered widespread speculation. Imagery indicated the booster’s upper section was heavily damaged, while the lower part appeared largely intact and briefly remained afloat before submerging.
