Hi everyone, today I want to talk about something that feels really close to home, literally.
It's how to create a cozy home without changing everything.
We often see home makeovers online and they involve doing a complete overhaul or buying
more stuff.
But for many of us, it is not quite realistic, especially if you're renting or you're sharing
the space with someone, or you simply don't want to spend a lot of money.
And so this video is for anyone who lives somewhere that it's still a work in progress
or it's a shared space, but you want to keep it cozy, peaceful, and intentional.
Most of us live in spaces that aren't perfect.
Maybe there's a wall color you're not a fan of, an awkward layout, or some furniture that
just isn't your style.
I get it.
Our place has a bright red sink in the bathroom and kitchen tiles that wouldn't exactly be
my first pick.
But since we're renting, big changes aren't really on the table.
For me, part of simple slow living means making the most of what we already have and creating
a peaceful home without spending a lot.
What helped me was pausing before falling into fix-it-all mode and asking, what's actually
working here?
What made us choose this home in the first place?
For us, it's a reasonably sized, furnished rental home that fits our budget.
It's in a peaceful neighborhood, close to cozy cafes and quiet nature walks.
Instead of focusing on what I would change, I started noticing the little things that
already felt good.
The natural light, the open layout, the peaceful atmosphere.
Once you consider those elements, creating a cozy home feels less like a massive project
and more like a gentle shift.
You don't need to start from scratch or redo everything.
Sometimes it's just about leaning into what's already there and making it feel more like
you.
I used to look at cottagecore homes on Pinterest and had memorable stays at beautifully styled
Airbnbs and silently wished our home looked like that.
But cozy isn't about matching a certain aesthetic, it's about how your space feels to you.
Creating a cozy home doesn't have to be all or nothing.
Instead of changing everything, it's about making small, intentional shifts.
And instead of adding more, letting go of what doesn't matter often makes a big difference.
There used to be a bulky dresser with a mirror in this room, but we returned it to our landlord
since we didn't really need it.
We replaced it with a desk which fits nicely and serves a purpose in my husband's home
office.
We got rid of the rug and mantel that came with the house and also rearranged the furniture
to what makes most sense for us.
These little shifts made the room feel more open and simplified.
And it didn't cost a thing.
Without buying much, you can create cozy feelings through meaningful details.
For me, that meant softening our space in small ways that didn't cost a lot.
Here are a few little things that helped.
Add soft lighting to gently shift the mood.
Even a small lamp can help.
Include something handmade that's either decorative or functional, like a crocheted pillow or
a couple of tiny succulents in handmade pots.
Light an incense or a candle.
The glow and scent can instantly make your space feel more soothing.
Layer textures.
Even just a soft throw you like can add warmth and comfort.
Clear a small corner just for you, like a cozy reading nook with a chair, blanket, or
your favorite book.
Bring in a natural element, like a vase with flowers or clippings from outside.
These gentle shifts may not seem like much at first, but that's really the point for
me.
It's the small tweaks and subtractions that enhance our space and make it our own.
Without overwhelming our budget or our energy.
We see home makeover shows or aesthetic cottagecore videos, and they're all pretty without doubt.
But if you don't live alone, creating that kind of space requires some compromise.
One of the biggest things I've learned is how to make our home feel cozy without making
it all about me.
And if you're sharing a space with someone, this might feel familiar for you too.
I love my husband, but we definitely have different tastes when it comes to our preference
for our surroundings.
For example, if I had full control, I would rather have indoor plants, dainty white curtains,
and a soft rug in our home.
He on the other hand, prefers cleaner lines or much more minimal decor.
So no white curtains, no indoor jungle, and definitely no rugs.
So at first, it felt like I had to give up my dream of having a cozy home.
But then I realized that compromising doesn't mean giving up.
It means creating something meaningful together.
So we found the middle ground, fresh flowers in a vase or microgreens instead of hanging
potted plants.
Keep the curtains he likes, but open them wide during the day to let natural light in.
And I'm free to make a small corner feel like my own, like my little crafting space.
A cozy home isn't about overhauling your space to match someone else's photogenic style.
It's about creating a place that truly feels like you.
If you're living in a rental, a shared space, or a home that isn't quite Instagrammable,
I hope this reminds you that you don't have to change everything to feel at home.
You don't have to spend a lot.
And you definitely don't have to make it look like someone else's version of cozy.
Start with what matters to you.
Add small comforts.
And if you share your space with someone, make room for them too.
If you're on your own, let it be a space that truly reflects and supports you.
That's real coziness.
Thanks so much for watching.
I'd love to hear what your version of cozy looks like, even in an imperfect space.
