It was a big celebration today in true
Scottish fashion at the Glasgow Land
Scottish Festival. 28 News reporter
Aretta Oda takes us through the lively
day that many have been waiting for.
Northampton brought the country of
Scotland to the people as hundreds
gathered for the 30th annual Glasgow
Land Scottish Festival. The second
largest Scottish festival in New
England. It's a day filled with Scottish
traditions. There's Celtic dancers,
musicians, Scottish dogs, weavers,
kilts, and vendors with foods galore.
Here I have a sausage roll with Scottish
beef rolled in a flaky puff pastry. And
we're going to try it. All right.
There's even competitions for drummers
and bagpipe players. You can play alone
or in a team with judges evaluating
their performances. This is Peter.
him and his wife travel from Nashville,
Tennessee to play and compete.
We're pretty obsessive about the pipes,
so we practice every day all the time.
We're always thinking about the uh pipe
tunes and things like that. So, we've
been working hard and uh we're here just
to try to play good music in the in the
forest.
And Mate Castillo here has been drumming
for 3 years and travel from Long Island,
New York to compete with her team.
It's like a fun experience like going to
these competitions and like knowing it's
like with friends. It's just always fun
and like the adrenaline of competing is
always very nice and um we're also going
to Scotland this year so um you'll see
us there.
The festival is all hosted by the
Glasgow Land Scottish Festival
Incorporated, a nonprofit that supports
the youth and provides scholarships for
qualifying Scottish dancers, pipe and
drum students. All the proceeds for
today's event benefits two local
organizations. The River Valley
Counseling Center, a mental health
clinic, and the Forum House for adults
who are disabled and disadvantaged.
