Anna London-Truckle tells Holly and Phillip how contacting TV series Long Last Family resulted in an incredible reunion with her mother.
I just, this is one of my favourite programmes on the telly, but I'd be utterly useless at
presenting it because if I was presenting it I'd be in tears all the time. Are you never,
we're about to talk about this story, you never move to tears? Yes. Are you? They cut those bits
out. Do they? Do you and Davina actually cry? Davina when she gets home has a massive sob,
but sometimes things are so, sometimes close to heart, things are so moving and so powerful
you have a go, but you know what, it's about Anna, it's not about us, it's about the amazing
people who I think inspire, I think they're inspirational. Well let's talk about Anna's
story because this story took the show over the opposite side of the world, and your story is
one that when you were two years old you were adopted, but your life that you were born into
is very different to the life that you lead now, so what did you know of your life before? I knew
that my mum was pretty destitute when she put me up for adoption, and then I was looked after by
my uncles and my brother, I mean that's pretty much it. Well you were born in 1986 in Riobamba
in the heart of the Andes in Ecuador, and your birth name was Viviana, and they came, when you
were two your parents brought you over to the UK. Yeah. And so they put you up for adoption then,
but you found a diary of that time didn't you? Yeah, so my adoptive parents kept a diary
from the moment they landed in South America right up until when they left with me,
about every day, just everything that happened, how they felt, and then as I was older my dad gave
it to me, and I was able to read the journey. Well as Nicky said of his own story, because you're
adopted as well, that those children who grow up with incredibly kind, loving families, but
know that there is a chunk missing as a whole in their lives, and how did you feel? I definitely
always felt different, I think knowing that you're adopted just puts a sense of who am I,
where do I belong, so I always felt like that. And nobody looked like you? And also yeah, I looked
completely different to my parents, completely, so that was just added on to how I was feeling.
So why long lost family then? Had you tried to contact your family? I tried, I think it's quite
difficult because it's South America, so far away, I don't speak the language, and I just thought
let's give this a go, let's see what happens. So you filled out the form? Yeah. How long did it take
before they got back to you? It wasn't that long, I was quite surprised when I got the phone call,
and it kind of just carried on from there. Well Nicky, you flew out to Ecuador first of all, you
had the first meeting with her mother. But how did she feel when she knew that her daughter was
looking for her? She felt amazing, but she felt even more amazing and wonderful when she knew that
you were fine. Yeah. And she knew that you were happy, and that you'd had a great upbringing. Yeah.
I think that's what matters to people so much, because they live, for right or wrong me, they
live with this kind of guilt, and they just want to know that everything's okay. And when you were
told, it was Davina that came and told you that she'd been found, and you didn't really believe
that the show was going to be able to find her, so there must have been... I think I always try to
think of the worst case scenario, like it's not going to happen, just to prepare myself. And
protect yourself. Yeah, so I think when Davina told me, it just took me a second to actually
take that in, I was so surprised. Yeah, I was shocked. And what sort of contact have you now had?
So, social media, I've been able to contact my mum, and when I was out there, I met my uncles
and my half-sisters, so I'm able to keep in contact with them. And you said at the beginning
that, you know, you're obviously very grateful to your adoptive parents, but there was something
missing, you felt incomplete. And by going through this process, and meeting her, do you feel more
complete now? Yeah, definitely getting there. I still think it's a big journey that I need to go
on. But I've met her, I know who she is, I know that she's okay, and I know how she feels about
me, and I think that was quite important for me, to know what she thinks of me. You get to a better
place. Yeah, yeah, definitely feels so much better, it's like a relief of knowing who she is.
And for you, there must be, and Davina, and the team, there must be an incredible sense of
satisfaction doing a show like this. Yeah, it's, a lot of my other professional work, I spend my
time making people angry, and shouting at each other, you know. So this is, and arguing with each other,
and debating with each other. So this is, it's a really beautiful thing to be involved with. I'm
so lucky, and I know Davina feels the same. And I've never had a reaction to any show that I've
done like this, and it's the same for Davina. People running over to the other side of the road,
and saying, oh you do that programme, and telling, and also telling you their stories. Because
everyone watching, everyone has a story, or everyone knows somebody who has a story. And the show is
also brilliant at the support that it offers. It doesn't just reunite you, I mean you would have
been supported every step of the way of this process, because it's not easy, it's not a
sticking class, you don't just meet them and it's all happy. It's a process which you're
going through. Yeah, and I'm glad I've done it this way, had I done it like anywhere else,
I wouldn't have got the support that I've got. Well thank you guys. Tonight's programme by the way,
I think is one of the most powerful hours of television I've ever seen. I watched it through
with my wife about three weeks ago, and I rang her the next morning, and I said, everything all right?
She said, I can't talk, I'm still in recovery. I tweeted pictures of me sobbing whilst I've been watching.
Nine o'clock tonight on ITV, so don't miss it. Thank you very much.
It's lovely to meet you. Thank you very much indeed. Great story, thanks Becky.
