Bucharest, the southeastern Romanian capital and the country's largest city with nearly
2 million inhabitants, was hit by a severe thunderstorm on Thursday evening, which hit
the entire city in just half an hour and triggered a code red warning, killing one woman and sending
residents into a panic. One of the most striking effects of the storm was in the Avia Torilor
district, one of the capital's major business centers. According to the footage that quickly
spread on social media, the revolving door of a high-rise office building in this area
was blown off its place by winds exceeding 90 kilometers per hour. Despite its heavy structure,
the door was unable to withstand the force of the storm, showing the extent of the natural
phenomenon. In the same minutes, in the Grozovesti neighborhood, a metal roof was blown away by the
wind and fell into the nearby Dumbavica river. The fact that the piece of roof fell close to
people walking on the riverbank was another example of a potential disaster narrowly avoided.
But the most tragic result of the storm occurred in the Otopeni district, north of the capital.
A 49-year-old woman was seriously injured when a large chunk of the roof of an apartment building
next to the one she was staying in came crashing through a window. The incident occurred at around
1733, and authorities confirmed that the woman died shortly afterwards. Police and emergency
medical teams were dispatched to the area after the incident. According to preliminary assessments,
a piece of the roof broke off and went directly into the woman's house, causing fatal injuries.
Around the same time, two people were hospitalized after being injured by falling tree branches in
The injuries are reportedly not life-threatening.
Across the capital, trees were toppled, roads were closed to traffic, and items in open spaces were
blown away by the wind. Several trees were reported to have fallen in Mogashoia Park,
but no casualties were reported. A large piece of the roof of a building at the police academy
flew off, posing a risk to the neighborhood. Tables and chairs were overturned at many
outdoor terraces in the city center, and business owners did not have time to collect
their belongings. During the red alert, not only nature but also city life came to a standstill.
According to the Bucharest National Airports Company, 15 airplanes that were supposed to
land at Otepeni Airport were held in the air for a long time due to bad weather conditions.
According to the aviation news website Boarding Pass, some of these planes were
diverted to other cities. Tram services were also severely affected by the storm.
According to data shared by the Bucharest Ilfov Emergency Situations Inspectorate,
a total of 50 emergency interventions were carried out during the storm.
During these interventions, 44 trees were felled, 15 vehicles were severely damaged,
four houses were completely roofed, one fence was knocked down, and five gas pipes were broken.
In addition, a tree fell on a gas pipe on Mircea Vulkanescu Street, leading to a potential risk
of gas leakage. In central points such as Primavera Avenue and Kisilev Avenue,
fallen trees completely paralyzed transportation.
The heavy downpour and strong winds caused by the storm affected not only the city center,
but the entire periphery of Bucharest. In the north of the city, traffic came to a complete
standstill. Especially in the evening, vehicles were stranded on the main arteries for more than
30 minutes. In addition to transportation, telecommunication and power lines were also
disrupted. Citizens were surprised by the sudden and short-lived natural phenomenon.
It was noted that the sky suddenly darkened before the onset of the rainfall,
and many people were warned with row alert notifications along with severe thunderstorms.
Stay indoors, close windows, seek shelter in safe areas, the notifications said. However,
despite these warnings, many people caught outdoors were exposed to wind and hail in
unsheltered areas. Some citizens said they had difficulty walking on the sidewalks due to the
wind, and felt as if they were being blown away. Experts warn that it may take time for the weather
conditions in the region to stabilize after this devastating storm in and around Bucharest. While
new localized downpours and sudden winds in the coming days could create similar hazards,
especially in areas with poor infrastructure. According to the forecasts shared by the
meteorological services, atmospheric instabilities are expected to be effective for a few more days,
and the risk of hail is expected to persist with short but intense rainfall transitions.
As a result, the storm, which lasted only 30 minutes but was felt for hours,
and in some areas even throughout the day, was one of the most severe and destructive
weather events Bucharest has ever witnessed. The storm hit the city in a much shorter period
of time than expected, with serious consequences in terms of loss of life and material damage.
Transportation collapsed, air traffic was disrupted, roofs of houses were blown off,
and many vehicles were destroyed. It is a reminder of how prepared city governments,
institutions, and individuals need to be for natural disasters, and a strong warning that
existing infrastructure and early warning systems need to be reassessed.
We extend our sincere condolences to all the citizens of Bucharest for the loss and devastation
caused by this catastrophic disaster. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. We wish patience
and condolences to the bereaved families. We hope that the damaged infrastructure in the city will
be restored as soon as possible, and that steps will be taken towards an even safer future.
