Ferrari's 2025 campaign was already on shaky ground with a temperamental car and sky-high
expectations, but now they're dealing with turbulence from outside their own garage.
As Red Bull continues to splinter following Christian Horner's sacking,
some of that fallout is drifting straight into Maranello.
Whispers of Horner potentially replacing Frederic Vasseur as team boss are gaining traction,
adding another layer of uncertainty to a team already struggling to find its footing.
Ferrari may be flirting with disaster if they go through with rumoured shake-ups reported
by the Italian press, shake-ups that could cost them none other than Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time Formula One world champion hasn't held back about his frustrations in
his debut season with the Scuderia, which so far hasn't yielded a single podium finish.
Despite a solid fourth-place result at the British Grand Prix,
Hamilton has publicly called for Ferrari to shift gears and abandon development of this year's car
in favour of focusing on next season. But if whispers from Maranello are to be believed,
much bigger changes may be coming well before the 2026 regulation overhaul.
Frederic Vasseur is under increasing pressure as Ferrari continue to fall short of matching
McLaren's pace. According to major Italian outlets, including Corriere della Sera,
Vasseur's future with the team is far from secure. Adding more fuel to the fire,
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that technical director Loic Serra,
who followed Hamilton from Mercedes, has failed to deliver the expected performance boost,
and may soon exit stage left alongside Vasseur. Signs are pointing to a change in management at
Ferrari, with both Frederic Vasseur and Loic Serra rumoured to be on their way out. And,
in a twist worthy of their Netflix docuseries, none other than Christian Horner,
recently ousted from Red Bull, could be lining up to lead Ferrari's next chapter.
According to past comments from team adviser Helmut Marko,
Horner came close to joining the Scuderia back in late 2022, only for Marko to block the move.
Ferrari chairman John Elkan, for one, is said to be a big admirer of the former Red Bull boss.
But not everyone is convinced this would be a smooth transition.
Former F1 TV presenter and current Fox IndyCar lead commentator Will Buxton warned on the
Sports Agent's podcast that Horner's arrival in Maranello could ruffle some serious feathers,
including those of Lewis Hamilton.
If they replaced Fred with Christian Horner,
I don't think Lewis would be a Ferrari driver for much longer, he said.
The idea of Horner going to Ferrari is seen by many in the paddock as far-fetched.
Tensions between Hamilton and Horner are no secret. And bad blood between the two
flared when the seven-time world champion accused Horner of stirring things
during rumours linking Hamilton to a shock partnership with Max Verstappen at Red Bull.
Speaking to Sky Sports while still with Mercedes, Hamilton said,
I don't really know where that story has come from. I mean, I know it's come from Christian.
I don't really understand what he's been talking about because no one, as far as I'm aware,
from my team has spoken to him. I haven't spoken to Christian really in years.
However, he did reach out to me earlier on in the year about meeting up, but that's it.
I just congratulated them on an amazing year and said,
hopefully soon I'll be able to fight against you guys in the near future.
That was it. So I'm not really sure. I think he's just stirring things.
I am not surprised people drop my name in many conversations because they know it's
going to make waves. And if you're a little bit lonely and don't get much attention,
it's the perfect thing to do.
Not only that, it seems that Christian Horner isn't the only one Lewis Hamilton isn't on the
best of terms with. Tensions are to be expected when a new driver joins a team, especially when
that driver happens to be a seven-time world champion. So it's not exactly shocking that
Charles Leclerc isn't rolling out the red carpet for Hamilton following his move to Ferrari.
And if you're expecting Frederic Vasseur to play peacekeeper, don't hold your breath.
While some team principals dream of harmony between their drivers,
Vasseur sees value in a bit of friendly fire. Leclerc, now 27, has been Ferrari's golden boy
since 2020, the driver around whom the team has shaped its cars for years. But whispers
in the paddock suggest that Hamilton, 40, may soon take the reins when it comes to shaping
Ferrari's direction for the 2026 car. That kind of shift is bound to stir emotions,
especially if it hints at a changing of the guard. Still, Vasseur, whose own future with the team is
under scrutiny, has previously made it clear that he doesn't mind a little edge between teammates.
In fact, he might even prefer it. After all, a touch of rivalry can sometimes be the secret
ingredient to pushing both drivers to their limits. Earlier this year, he told Belgian news
outlet RTBF that they are getting along very well, super focused and motivated, with great
mutual understanding. But there has to be competition. I don't want them to be best friends,
nor enemies, but above all, they must be rivals. It must stay that way. They should always push to
outperform each other and be driven by that. In any case, their mindset is healthy and positive.
To his credit, Lewis Hamilton has been all-class since stepping into the red overalls at Maranello.
From the outside looking in, the seven-time world champion has shown nothing but warmth and respect
towards Charles Leclerc. During pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit,
Hamilton made that admiration crystal clear when he said,
Charles is massively talented. Getting to see him work opposite the table and watching him in the
Obviously, he's been here for a long time, so he knows the team well, he speaks Italian,
he's at home and at ease. But because we already had a friendship before,
that's made it a lot easier to just get straight into working together.
He went on to call Leclerc incredibly talented, and even admitted he's eager to learn from his
younger teammate, who at 13 years his junior, represents the next generation of F1 elite.
But those good vibes could be tested if Leclerc starts to feel like he's being edged out as
Ferrari's leading man. Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has already hinted at a
possible crack in the façade, suggesting Leclerc may have felt a twinge of envy after Hamilton's
sprint race victory in China earlier this season. And if Hamilton ends up leading the charge in
Ferrari's 2026 Challenger, that competitive tension could very well intensify.
That said, Leclerc has handled the situation with grace, at least publicly.
When asked about the possibility of Hamilton taking charge of developing the car,
he responded with,
I don't think that's the problem, and I just want the fastest car possible next year.
That's exactly what Lewis wants. And then wherever we are next year,
I'll set up the car in a way that I like, and Lewis will do just the same.
With the SF25 still proving unpredictable and leadership questions going around,
will the team crossing the finish line in Abu Dhabi look different from the one that
started in Bahrain? I'd love to hear your thoughts down in the comments.
