One sunny afternoon, Toby the bear had a brilliant idea.
I'm going to surprise Papa with a picnic, he whispered to himself.
He tiptoed through the house, looking for things to pack.
First he found a basket. It was a bit wobbly, but it would do.
Then he added, a towel with dinosaurs on it.
Perfect for sitting, Toby said with a nod.
He grabbed a jar of something. He wasn't quite sure what.
And tucked it in.
Then he added a sponge, because it was soft.
A pair of mittens, in case it got cold.
And a toy wheel, just because it looked fun.
Toby looked into the basket.
Hmm, I feel like I'm forgetting something, he said.
He scratched his head, then added a banana and closed the lid.
Ready?
He marched proudly to Papa Bear, who was reading on the porch.
Picnic time, Toby announced.
Papa blinked.
Oh, what a lovely surprise.
Toby led him to a sunny patch of grass under a big tree.
He opened the basket with a grand ta-da.
Papa peeked inside.
A sponge, mittens, bubbles. Is that a wheel?
He said, trying not to smile too wide.
Toby looked puzzled.
There aren't any sandwiches, he mumbled.
I wanted it to be perfect.
Papa Bear laughed and pulled him into a big bear hug.
This is perfect, he said.
We have sunshine, a picnic towel, and my favorite bear in the world.
They sat on the dinosaur towel and blew bubbles.
They made funny voices with the mittens.
They even rolled the toy wheel down the hill.
It got stuck in a flower bush.
Toby giggled.
Next time, I'll bring food, he said.
Papa winked.
And I'll bring the blanket.
They lay back, watching the clouds drift by, their bellies not full,
but their hearts very happy.
Moral, a picnic doesn't need to be perfect.
Just full of love and laughter.
