A local high school graduate awarded
with a scholarship for his desire to
pursue a career in public service.
22 News reporter Victoria Buddy joins us
live in studio and shares how this
scholarship pays tribute to a late state
representative.
Sara Nick state representative Dave
Vinho leaving his legacy in the city of
Springfield helping young adults pursue
higher education and their passion.
I've been a longtime friend and mentee
of Dave Vino. He was so involved and
thought it was important that young
people get involved in the political
process.
A lucky high school graduate taking home
a $1,000 scholarship. The award created
after state representative Daveo died
from pancreatic cancer back in 2019. As
a tribute to him and his long-standing
campaign and fight for social justice,
we created the Dave Neo political
scholarship to encourage young people to
continue their involvement in public
affairs.
Back in 1965, he helped register black
voters in Mississippi. There he was
arrested and later released. However,
his purpose to fight for others and
their rights. This marks the seventh
time this award has been given out to a
student within the Springfield public
schools. This scholarship means a lot to
me. It is a representation of young
people such as myself getting involved
in the political process. I'm a first
generation college student. Um my
parents did not go to college and so we
aren't, you know, financially able to
pay for college. I hope to study
politics and journalism. I've taken
journalism class for two years in high
school and I want to continue that. And
I also want to go to law school. So the
end goal is lawyer probably living in
Boston and representing people.
High school students interested in the
scholarship can apply annually in April.
