Allegro vivace! Finale from Beethoven's 8th
The super-fast, irony-laden finale of Beethoven's Eighth Symphony is the composer at his most humorous, and the sudden fortissimo note in the opening is right out of Haydn’s playbook. Timpani features heavily here, along with sudden key-changes, syncopations, lopsided dances, clumsy counterpoint, and quasi-religious episodes. The whole symphony ends on an altogether too-long passage of F major harmony. (Thomas Ang)
