Throughout US agricultural history, there have been many record-breaking harvests
that reshaped production patterns and transformed agricultural markets.
Some harvests stand out for their extraordinary scale and impact, far exceeding all expectations.
In today's video, we'll explore some of the most impressive harvests ever recorded
in the United States.
In the fall of 2022, pumpkin fields across the US buzzed with more activity than ever before.
From late September through to October, farmers in states like Illinois,
California and Pennsylvania entered what would become the largest pumpkin harvest on record.
The harvesting machines work by using a gripping mechanism to cut the stem,
lift the pumpkin onto a conveyor belt before transporting it to a storage bin.
Each machine can harvest between 13 to 17 pounds of pumpkins per hour,
increasing efficiency and reducing manual labour.
According to the USDA, total pumpkin production in 2022 reached nearly 790 million kilograms,
the highest yield ever recorded in US history.
This abundant supply not only supported festive seasons like Halloween, but also provided raw
materials for the food processing industry, helping to stabilise prices and boost exports.
In 2023, the state of California reported its highest wine grape production ever.
According to the Californian Department of Food and Agriculture,
the grape harvest reached 9.4 billion pounds, an increase of around 13% when compared to 2022.
The atmosphere during this historic harvest season in California was bustling and vibrant.
Modern machinery and a large labour force were deployed
to ensure the grapes were harvested at peak ripeness, a critical factor in determining
wine quality. Farmers worked from early morning until late evening, carefully selecting each
bunch of grapes to ensure optimal sugar levels, acidity and flavour. Wineries across California
operated at full capacity, processing nearly 95 million pounds of grapes per day
over the roughly 100-day harvest season.
The 2023 harvest further solidified California's global leadership in wine production,
with the state accounting for over 80% of US wine output in nearly all wine exports.
In 2023, the US recorded an impressive apple harvest, with total production
reaching around 9.91 billion pounds, the highest in recent years. Washington state led the way,
producing around 6.7 billion pounds, accounting for nearly 70% of the nation's output.
Apple harvest season in the US typically runs from August through to October.
Farmers usually begin to work early in the morning, when the air is still cool,
to prevent the apples from wilting. Each apple is hand-picked at just the right stage of ripeness
to preserve its crisp texture and sweet flavour. When the pickers' bags are full,
they gently release the apples into large, padded bins to protect the delicate skins from bruising.
This abundant apple season ensured a steady domestic supply and also boosted exports.
In 2023, the US exported around 1.61 billion pounds of fresh apples worldwide.
In 2024, the US set a new record on fresh strawberry exports, reaching 351.5 million pounds,
an increase of 20% over the previous year when it was valued at over $570 million.
Strawberries became the third most valuable fresh fruit export from the US after apples and grapes.
Among strawberry-growing states, California stood out,
contributing over 86% of the nation's total production.
The strawberry harvest in California runs from late spring through to early summer.
Farmers pick the berries by hand during the cool morning hours to prevent bruising.
Each berry is harvested with its stem intact and gently placed into plastic trays right in the
field. Depending on conditions, each worker can harvest around 5 to 7 kilograms per hour.
After being transported to processing facilities, the strawberries are washed,
sorted by size and ripeness, before being packed in a chilled environment to maintain their
freshness before being exported to major markets like Canada, Mexico and Japan.
The year 2012 marked a golden milestone in the US cherry industry. States in the Pacific Northwest,
Washington, Oregon and Idaho harvested over 460 million pounds of sweet cherries,
the highest volume ever recorded.
More than a decade later, 2024 marked another impressive cherry season.
The entire Pacific Northwest region harvested 19.2 million boxes, over 500,000 more than the
prior year. While it didn't surpass the 2012 record, it was the best crop since the pandemic,
signaling a strong recovery from the industry.
Washington was the heart of the season, contributing 17.7 million boxes,
by far the largest share in the region. Notably, this year's harvest was evenly spread across the
This helped to ensure a smoother picking and distribution process,
easing pressure on both farmers and transportation systems.
In 2024, the US cranberry harvest reached 8.24 million barrels, nearly hitting the highest level
ever recorded in the industry's history. Wisconsin led the way, with an estimated
accounting for over 60% of national production and coming close to its all-time record.
The most common harvesting method is wet harvesting. Farmers flood the cranberry fields,
causing the berries to float to the surface.
Then machines gently agitate the water to loosen the berries from the vines.
The floating berries are gathered using containment booms and vacuumed up with
specialized equipment onto trucks bound for processing facilities.
This method is fast, efficient and helps reduce bruising and contamination.
Cranberries are one of the few North American crops with an industry value exceeding $1 billion.
Wisconsin alone contributes nearly $1 billion in revenue and supports around 4,000 jobs.
Exports have also been rising sharply, particularly to the EU, Canada and China.
In 2020, US agriculture marked a major milestone with its largest sugarcane harvest in history,
totalling 79 billion pounds, smashing all prior records.
Florida and Louisiana were the two powerhouse states driving this record-breaking season.
Florida's harvest typically begins in October and continues through early spring.
Once harvested, the sugarcane is quickly transported by truck to processing plants
within hours to maintain freshness and quality.
There, it is converted into raw sugar, refined sugar and by-products like molasses.
The massive output not only met domestic consumption needs,
but also helped to stabilize sugar prices across the US.
Throughout 2020, the average price of refined sugar held steady at around 33 to 34 cents per pound.
Since 2021, the US harvested 5.7 billion pounds of sweetcorn,
the second largest crop in its history.
Washington led the way with 1.57 billion pounds, followed by Minnesota with 1.44 billion.
Together, these two states account for more than half of the national total.
The harvest typically takes place from late August to mid-September.
Specialized harvesters cut the stalks, separate the kernels and collect them directly in the field.
The corn is then transported in refrigerated trucks to nearby processing facilities,
where it's sorted, packed or frozen within 24 hours to preserve its sweetness and freshness.
According to the USDA, around 90% of US sweetcorn production is consumed domestically.
Over 60% is used for frozen foods and canned goods, mainly supplying supermarkets,
restaurants and major food companies like ConAgra, Green Giant and Del Monte.
In 2017, the US recorded its largest ever peanut crop, reaching 7.6 billion pounds,
thanks to significant increases in both acreage and yield.
This record-breaking season boosted exports,
ensured stable domestic supply and elevated the US peanut industry's global standing.
By 2025, the industry is expected to maintain strong production levels.
US peanut acreage is projected to reach around 1.8 million acres,
producing nearly 7.5 billion pounds, almost matching the 2017 record.
Additionally, 2025 is set to mark a new quality milestone,
with 99.5% of all peanuts meeting industry standards, reflecting steady improvements in
quality. With roughly 22% of the crop destined for export, the peanut industry continues to
be a major contributor to US agricultural exports and global competitiveness.
The year 2016 marked a significant historical milestone for the US sugar beet industry.
Production this year reached around 79 billion pounds, the highest level
ever recorded between 2001 and 2023 according to USDA data.
This bumper crop was made possible by favourable weather,
stable planting acreage and significantly improved yields.
The 2016 sugar beet season stood out not only for its record-breaking volume,
but also for the high level of mechanisation during harvest.
In the fall, once the beets had matured, farmers began harvesting with specialised machinery.
Firstly, defoliators ran along the rows to remove the green leaves.
Right behind, beet harvesters lifted the beets up from the soil
using rotating wheels or specialised lifting blades.
The beets were then moved onto conveyor belts to shake off dirt and small rocks.
Then they were directly loaded onto trucks bound for processing plants.
Thanks to mechanisation, the harvest process was fast, efficient and minimised the loss of
sugar content that can occur after beets are pulled from the ground.
In 2017, the US sweet potato industry hit a major milestone, producing a record 3.5 billion pounds.
North Carolina played a dominant role, accounting for nearly the entire national output.
Other key contributors include California, Mississippi and Louisiana,
helping to cement the US's place in global sweet potato production.
Following this success, the US sweet potato industry maintained steady performance in
subsequent years. Although the record wasn't broken, the 2023 season still saw a strong
output of 2.4 billion pounds. Notably, planted acreage reached around 127,000 acres, the highest
in nearly a decade, showing that farmers continue to invest in sweet potatoes as a key crop.
In 2025, the US saw rapid growth in high-tech agriculture, especially in greenhouse farming.
The Sharaday cucumber variety grown in greenhouses achieved yields of around 135,000 pounds per acre,
two to three times than traditional outdoor farming.
The harvest process was carried out manually and delicately along trellis systems.
Workers cut the stems and gently placed each cucumber into trays. Each shift lasted around
six to eight hours per day. The cucumbers were then sent immediately to automated
packing lines for quality checks and export packaging.
Greenhouse cucumber production in 2025 contributed significantly to the total value of US fruit and
vegetable exports. Though it accounted for just 10 to 15 percent of total cucumber output,
the high quality allowed the US to expand into premium supermarket chains and export markets
in Canada and Europe. In 2017, the US achieved its highest cotton production on record,
reaching 21 million bales. In major producing states like Texas and Georgia, the harvest ran
from September to November. Dry weather allowed cotton pickers to operate continuously,
collecting and baling cotton right in the field. This season laid the foundation
for America's strong cotton export position in the years that followed.
While not a record year, the 2019 season still reached a high level with 20 million bales.
Remarkably, 85 percent of that production was exported, giving the US a 35 percent share of
global cotton market. The supply primarily supported the textile and cotton seed industries
in international markets. The entire cotton sector generated around 21 billion dollars in revenue,
reinforcing the US's leadership in the global cotton supply chain.
In 2024, California's almond growing regions kicked off the harvest season early in August
with a vibrant pace. Specialized tree shakers were used to dislodge the almonds which fell
to the ground. Sweeper machines then gathered the nuts into rows before vacuum harvesters
collected them for transport to processing facilities. This method saved time and
significantly reduced post-harvest loss when compared to manual picking. In 2024,
California's almond acreage reached around 1.38 million acres, the highest ever recorded.
Total almond production is estimated at 2.8 billion pounds,
the third largest crop in history. With both acreage and yield increasing, California
is responsible for over 80 percent of the world's almonds and continues to lead the global market.
Wheat harvest season in Argentina typically takes place from November
to December, once the wheat has matured and reached optimal quality. During this time,
the fields come alive with the sounds of machinery and trucks moving busily across the land.
The 2016 season marked a historic peak for the US wheat industry,
with production reaching nearly 2.3 billion bushels. This achievement was driven by nearly
19.15 million acres planted and an impressive acreage yield of 7.8 pounds per acre.
By the 2024 season, the US wheat industry showed strong signs of recovery, with production
reaching 1.971 billion bushels, the highest level since 2016.
While not a new record, it remains a remarkable and promising wheat harvest.
