Archaeologists in Iran have uncovered a vast underground city beneath Abarkuh, Yazd province, reshaping the region's historical understanding. Initially discovered beneath five historical homes, the subterranean complex includes tunnels, stone chambers, and a sophisticated aqueduct, showcasing advanced engineering skills. Dating possibly to the Qajar era, the site likely served as living quarters, safe routes, and emergency hideouts. The underground city's strategic design provided both comfort and defense, maintaining lower temperatures and protection during invasions. Extending beneath one-third of Abarkuh, the discovery offers new insights into Iran’s past, revealing the ingenuity of its ancient inhabitants.
