There was once a kind merchant who lived in a busy town.
He had two donkeys.
Every day he would load them with goods like jaggery, salt, rice, and grains to deliver to a village across the hills.
One morning, something was different.
As the merchant packed the donkeys, one of them, Ramo, was feeling very weak and sick.
His legs were trembling and his head was heavy, but he couldn't speak to the merchant.
The merchant, unaware of Ramo's sickness, placed heavy loads on both donkeys and began his journey through the steep and rocky hills.
As they walked, the road became harder and harder for Ramo.
He struggled to breathe. His legs were shaking.
He turned to his friend Shamu, the other donkey, and with a soft, painful voice he said,
Brother Shamu, I'm not well today. I feel I won't make it. Please, can you help me?
Just take one of my sacks for a while. Just one. I might be able to survive this journey if you help me.
But Shamu didn't even look at him.
With pride and a cold tone, he replied, Why should I carry your load?
Your problem is your problem. You should manage it. I don't want extra weight on my back. Keep moving.
Ramo's heart broke. But what could he do?
He stayed silent, carrying the pain in his body and the sorrow in his heart.
Step by step, his condition got worse.
His legs were giving up.
Suddenly, while climbing a sharp slope, Ramo's foot slipped on a stone.
As Ramo slipped, his foot hit a sharp rock and he lost his balance.
The heavy sacks fell off his back and scattered on the rocky path.
But before Ramo could stop himself, he rolled down the edge into the deep valley, disappearing.
Ramo! No!
Shamu screamed as he watched his friend fall into the endless pit.
The merchant rushed to the edge, but it was too late. Ramo was gone.
Shamu stood frozen. His heart sank. Guilt hit him like a storm.
Brother, I should have helped you. I should have shared your burden.
You only asked for one sack. Just one.
If I had helped you, you would still be alive today.
Please forgive me, brother. Please.
The merchant, heartbroken, picked up all the fallen goods, not only his load,
but also his dead friend's entire burden, the weight he once refused.
As Shamu struggled with the unbearable weight, every step reminded him of his mistake.
The pain in his body was nothing compared to the pain in his heart.
There are moments in life when someone near us cries for help, sometimes with words, sometimes in silence.
When we ignore their pain, thinking it's not our responsibility, we don't just lose them.
We lose a part of ourselves.
Helping a friend, a stranger, or anyone in need is not a burden. It's a blessing.
One sack of kindness can save a life, but one moment of selfishness can create a lifetime of regret.
Never wait for the day when you say, if only I had helped.
