COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG'S MERCHANTS SQUARE
In this video, I recreate an Italian-inspired dress from the 1780s—using a pattern I drafted entirely from scratch, based on period references and extant garments.

This project is my attempt to stay as true as possible to 18th-century construction techniques, silhouettes, and style, while working within the limitations of modern materials and tools. The gown features the fitted back and skirt shaping typical of Italian gowns from the late 18th century, with hand-finished details throughout.

From researching museum pieces and fashion plates to draping the bodice and piecing the skirt, this video documents the entire process of bringing an 18th-century garment to life—one stitch at a time.

Whether you're into historical costuming, DIY fashion, or just love watching gowns come together from scratch, I hope you enjoy the journey!
