Land a Job in less than 12 weeks (Online Course): https://link.primalcareer.com/course A complete guide on How to Get a Job Without Experience, in 2019. This video will show you EXACTLY how to land your future job, in 5 actionable steps.
Here’s what you’ll learn in this action-packed guide:
Many strategies out there are outdated, so I grouped the best ones that were tried either by me or by successful people like GaryVee.
First, it's important to take responsibility. So many people blame Universities, the Government or the Economy when they can't find a job. Blaming others will only put a psychological roadblock between you, and your dream job. Acknowledge that you haven't probably done everything you could, and see how your brain starts coming up with solutions.
Second, I encourage you to build a plan. So many people apply to jobs randomly, myself included, then don't even remember the company when they call them! Have a plan, track your application, and make sure you set yourself up for success.
Third, if you know you lack certain skills to find a job, don't just hope you get this experience. Make it happen by using websites such as Udemy, Youtube or Skillshare to learn new skills that you can show off during job interviews or inside your applications.
Fourth, master your interview skills. If I ask you how well was your last interview, would you be able to tell me exactly what went well, and what went wrong? Most people would give me vague answers. That's why you have to note everything you experience after an interview, reflect on your mistakes, and never make them again.
Hey, in this video, I'll show you five of my favorite strategies to land a job with
no relevant experience.
So if you just graduated university or if you just want to switch job to another industry,
this video might help you.
In fact, these are the same strategies I use to land a job in consulting in a competitive
firm like PwC with no relevant experience.
Hey, it's Matty Caffey from Primal Career, the channel where I help you stand out in
your applications to land your future job.
If it's not done already, subscribe to this channel so that you won't miss any future
of my videos that might help you get your next job.
Who knows?
You might be in what I call the paradox of job search.
You need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience.
And some people get stuck in that loop for too long.
And so today, you're going to learn five ways to differentiate yourself to land a job with
no relevant experience.
And those are strategies not a lot of people talk about.
And spoiler alert, those are not common tips like make a good resume, a good LinkedIn profile
or network.
Also, make sure you stick around because at the end of the video, I'll share with you
a complete checklist to make a CV even if you don't have a lot of experience.
That's great and all, but how do I know that these strategies you're about to tell us will
work for anyone who don't have a lot of experience?
Alright, a little bit of context here then.
A couple years back, I graduated from university with not a lot of experience.
I didn't have any internships and I got customer service and sales experience from my part-time
jobs.
I didn't give too much importance to experience because I thought that my university's reputation
or my degree will be enough to get a job.
I was wrong.
In fact, let me know in the comment section if you've had a similar story.
So I started listening to so-called gurus saying stuff like how to make a good resume,
how to make a good LinkedIn profile, network, go to career fairs, but nothing was working
quite well because everyone is doing the same thing.
So this is when I started to come up with strategies to differentiate myself and those
are the same strategies I'm about to share with you, starting with number one, take responsibility.
I was browsing on YouTube, as usual, in the job search niche, when I stumbled in many comments
saying the same thing, blaming others for their own mistakes.
For example, this person says,
All the employers only want people with experience and no matter how much you sell yourself or
show how confident you are, they will never hire you.
Then he mumbles things about like employers only caring about money or I don't know.
Another person said that the only way you can find a job is by accepting a low wage
and that the economy and the government aren't helping at all.
And there's a big problem if you think that way, because if you blame others, if you always
say that it's the other person's fault, you're just powerless.
You're just standing there because you can't control the government, you can't control
employers and you can't control the economy.
But what do you control?
Yourself.
What I want you to do is put aside these negative thoughts and take responsibility.
I'm sorry to say, but if you spend two years with no jobs, at the end of the day, it's
your fault.
And I'll explain why later on.
You have to take proper action.
Yes, it could mean working for a low paying job for a couple of months.
Yes, it could mean struggle for a bit.
But all that should be part of your plan to get to your end goal, get a job you deserve.
The question now is, what actions will bring you closer to your end goal?
And that leads us to our second strategy, have a plan.
First of all, I want to ask you, what job do you want?
What job inspires you?
What job makes you dream?
When you know it, write it down.
Look for similar jobs available in the market right now.
What companies offer these jobs?
What qualifications you need?
What skills you need?
What education you need?
Once you have all this information available, it becomes easier to plan ahead because skills
can be learned, companies can be studied, and qualities can be earned.
That's a good quote, right?
It's from me.
Let's talk about the toughest part here.
How do you acquire skills if you don't have a job?
Strategy number three, side projects and work for free.
Wait, what?
I'm trying to pay my bills here and start my career, why do you want me to work for
free?
Whoa man, let me explain.
Once you know the exact skills you need to get that job, it becomes easier to find where
to start to learn those skills.
My favorite website for that is Skillshare.
You have tens of thousands of courses ranging from learning how to use specific software
like Photoshop, you could learn a new coding language, you can learn how to make videos,
and so on.
You can have two months for free if you want to try it out, link in the description.
Nowadays, information can be accessed so easily, so take advantage of that.
Once you learn the basics of the skills you need on Skillshare or other resources, you
can start working on side projects.
Why?
First, to build a portfolio, meaning working on tangible things you could show employers
during interviews for example, or putting on your CV.
For example, Austin Belkac that I mentioned in my last video learned digital marketing
on his own and freelanced for a bit and that led him to work at Microsoft at the end.
Another example is CS Dojo.
When he was a student, he learned how to code by himself and got a job at Microsoft at first
and then Google.
If you really want your dream job, you have to work hard for it because those are the
top jobs that not a lot of people are willing to do a lot of efforts to get.
If you don't know what projects you could work on or if you don't want to freelance
at all, you could work for free.
And I first learned about this strategy by Gary Vee and it's fabulous.
What I mean by that is offering your service for free to a business or an individual just
to learn from him, to learn from his business, how he do things, how he got there.
Gary Vee even drew a comic about it that I love, here it is.
And I love it because what's better than learning from someone who achieved what you
want to achieve yourself.
The truth is, in 2019, you don't necessarily need a job to get experience.
At this point, you should have enough to start landing some interviews so let's talk about
that in our fourth strategy, mastering your interview skills.
Did I tell you that I spent three years applying to jobs, got interviews and got rejected every
single time?
So please don't let that happen to you, at least not for three years.
Before an interview, head over to Glassdoor and do a quick research on people who have
interviews in your target employer.
Once you selected some questions, practice those questions with friends.
The key to mastering interviews is to practice, practice and practice.
I always say that it's because I failed for three years that I became successful afterward.
After the interview, you should write down your impressions, write down what went well,
what you should have done instead.
You'll see that after doing that for a couple of interviews, you will quickly learn from
your mistakes and you will know what worked and what didn't work.
And this will help you keep your good moves and don't repeat the bad ones.
It's easy to go to interviews and then just forget about them.
And then when we ask you, hey, how was your interview?
You will just say like, hmm, it went well, hmm, it didn't went well.
But you don't know exactly why and by writing down your impressions, you will know exactly
why it went well or why it didn't went well.
And knowing exactly what worked and what didn't work will help you later on to land more offers.
Let's move on to our last strategy just before I share with you my bonus guide that will
help you stand out in your CV even if you don't have a lot of experience.
Strategy number five, know how to sell yourself.
I wanted to tackle this concept because it's the most important thing you need to master
on your CV but during interviews as well when you don't have a lot of experience.
Why?
Well, usually experience and accomplishments are the only things that will prove your worth.
And if you don't have a lot to show, well, you still need to prove your worth.
That's why it becomes even more critical for you to know how to sell yourself because you
only have like one or two experience for example compared to another one who has like maybe
six experience.
If he explains well three or four and didn't explain well two, it doesn't matter for him
but for you, it will make or break the interview.
Talk is easy and employers or anyone won't really believe you if you do self praise.
What they want to see is proof.
Prove to me that you have good time management.
Prove to me that you know how to use the software.
How can I know that you have leadership?
And therefore, it's important to show your actions and your qualities in terms of accomplishments.
We spoke about side projects and the work you'll do for free.
How do you translate these accomplishments in your CV in a way that proves your quality?
You may have some basic experience like in sales or customer service in a call center.
How do you translate these jobs in skills employers actually look for?
I wrote a thorough guide giving you all the qualities, skills and accomplishments you
may have had in these jobs.
All you have to do is plug them in sentences in your CV or during a job interview.
Easy.
