With a tip from a local, I head up a mountain... which has many similarities with a sponge...
Wonder what kind of trouble I'm gonna get into up here. I thought it's gonna be gravel
My journey began at North America's most northern drivable point after riding through Canada and America
I've crossed over to Europe from there. I'll make my way across Asia and down to Australia
New Zealand's southern most drivable point will mark the end of my journey
I'm calling it the big spiral and this is act four a lap of Ireland and the United Kingdom. Oh
It's sunny today
A bit of a rare thing in Ireland
So I'm pretty happy about that
And also I had a Guinness last night, and I don't feel so bad today. So
Things are looking up
So yeah, let's let's get going
Before we go
There's a couple horses over there painted up as skeleton horses. It's really cool. I don't know if you can see that but
Yeah
Skeletons
awesome
All right, it's time to go
So I just want to go back the way I came a little bit
Because on the way in I saw this something. There's a fort there
Or and you know when you think about a fort
You know when I was a kid a fort is just like a little
wooden shack that you build in the woods or something, but
This is an Irish fort and it's an old one. So I thought I'd go check it out. Oh
Look at that the Sun there's some blue in the sky. It's a good day
Yeah yesterday there's so much mist in the air and even a little rain
my lens is just getting fogged up and
Pretty much makes the footage useless. So
Yeah, look at
They could see the other so there's another peninsula over there. I'm not sure what it's called
but yeah, there's this
West coast of Ireland is all these fingers coming out of it these peninsulas and
I think I'm on the third one up Kerry Peninsula
What I don't have it on my map I think it's coming out but must be coming up soon. Oh
That's it something port state I don't even know how to say it stagger stack stagger
something for it
Yes, thank you for
It's a and I feel like I've just
Stay for it, but maybe that's the French way. You'd say and clearly there's no French-speaking people here
Stake stake
Maybe there'll be someone there I could ask
It's so wet here. You get moss on the road
Which is a little bit scarier from a motorcycle
From my experience on mount bikes, it's really slippery. Look I have a shadow
You work oh there it is
They're just gonna say we're really kind of climbing into the mountains here Wow
It's a big circle
This is a parking lot. I guess I I could go through but maybe I won't
All right, let's have a look-see. I'm not really sure what to expect, but I can see already that it's round. Oh
There's the sheep
Thanks to the fort
How are you you're not gonna ram me are you oh now peeing
Okay, I'm going to the fort now
Okay
Huh, I
Got a little nervous. I know some of them like to to ram
All right, let's see. Oh
Wow
This is pretty cool. Oh, there's like little holes
All right, I have to go in the hole. Oh
It's really a little
Okay, that's a dead end. Oh
It's good in both ways
We allowed to walk on the top. It looks like it this
Like obviously there's steps, but there's actually the top is well worn
Okay, Wow
So this fort was built sometime they think between 300 and 400 AD and
It was likely for a lord or king at that time in Ireland. There are a lot of like
local kings or lords
Yeah, basically it was a protective place where they would have lived inside. So inside there would have been like huts or whatever
The walls are six meters high in places and four meters thick
So I I don't know what it was like back then, but they definitely built a pretty sturdy stout
It's lasted this long hasn't it? But
You know, I guess invaders I guess I guess they were all fighting each other back then
Hello
Are you local? I'm from Cork. Oh, okay. Do you know how to pronounce the name?
Stag Fort. Stag?
Yeah, I feel like it's got something to do with a deer
Okay
Stag? Stag?
Okay. Yeah, I thought it was like steak or I don't know. Yeah. Anyways, yeah, cool
Alright. I feel like it's something to do with deer. Yeah
Probably
All right. Thanks
All right, so I was reading a little bit more on the walk back
Apparently that hole I crawled into
well, I think those were
Cells for slaves like a combination for slaves. Oh
man
The Iron Age was a bit of a rough time, wasn't it?
So I asked the owner of my Airbnb like, oh, is there any like dirt roads around here? Cuz
we've got all these mountains here and
Actually, he said
You can drive to the top of the mountain nearby. So I think I want to just go do that and
Enjoy a bit of off-road for a bit
So it must be that mountain I'm going up. I'm not sure really
When I walked to the pub last night, I took this road
Here there's a sidewalk but back there is no sidewalk and it's actually kind of scary
To walk on the road in the dark here in Ireland, I think the pubs down there, isn't it? Yeah
Yes, here's our turn off it's gravel already
Okay, you said there was one gate and it's not locked and you should be able to go up oh
Yeah
Is this someone's house
Can I keep going am I breaking and entering here? Oh, it's muddy. Oh
It's real muddy, I
Wonder if it's a good idea
Okay, there's two gates apparently
Wonder what kind of trouble I'm gonna get into up here. I
Thought it's gonna be gravel. I
Imagine this never dries out so wet here
Grass maybe a little easier
Yeah, I hope I'm not breaking entering the Airbnb owners. I can just go up there. Oh
Cows hello
There's more than one gate
Wondering if I'm on the right hill. Oh
no, my
My kickstands going straight into the ground
Not gonna fall over. Are you it's sinking slowly sinking?
Gotta get one of those big pads
It goes under the kickstand
This gate is open
Not many people go up here, which is a good thing I think
And these plants these
Kind of rough plants look like something you'd find in a pond
Well get the view
Front end was pushing down the rut
whoo, oh
Getting up there. Oh
It's starting to hit some stone now
Maybe not so much stone. Oh
God the hole is bigger than I thought
Whoo
Okay, maybe one last gate here. Oh, the view is already awesome
Okay, don't tip over bike
The ground is so soft
Hmm I wonder if that means I should walk
Yeah, maybe that gate is they want it to stay closed
All right, let's head up and check out the view yeah, I think this gate is
Wired
Okay, well the ground is more solid than it felt on the bike
Well, I suppose this pole means we're at the top
You can't see much
All right
now for this small issue
Of going back down the hill
so much water
Bit of a mud pit here
It's definitely
Interesting riding here, that's for sure. Oh
The mist is kind of gone away and I get that view nice
Talk to you later ladies
So the next thing I want to go check out is
Some cliffs Kerry cliffs. It's the Kerry County
And I think they're supposed to be quite nice
But if I can it's one o'clock already, I might try to get some food
along the way
See now the Sun's out, huh?
The locals are like wow the Suns are out a
Little village
All right down to the water too, I feel like I should
dip my boots in
all right, I got myself a
sandwich and a drink and
Let's go to the beach
All right. Let's see what we got here
so I ordered a hot carvery and I think carvery means they carve the meat off the
the hunk of meat
Hey ham
Well, I feel like I gotta at least dip my boots in the ocean
One because they're kind of dirty and two
Well, I did it on the other side in Halifax. So
Well, this is a big one
There we go
All right, well that was nice and relaxing
Let's head to the cliffs
Look at this old little
Cute little fishing town
A ten minute walk to the most beautiful cliffs that Kerry Post Basin
Magnificent view of a rock. Oh
It's like a whole
thing, can I
Special motorcycle parking. Oh
I have to pay, huh?
Okay
Five year or later and we're heading towards the Kerry cliffs
It's private property
And there's no drones, so
We just have to see what we see I guess. Oh
Wow
Well, that's quite cool, actually
All right, well I've seen the Kerry cliffs now
They are nice cliffs
But I have to say I do feel a little bit limited when I can't use the drone
But
well
That's the way she goes I guess
All right. I saw this road
up there
And it looks interesting
So I'm going to take it
These Irish drivers, that guy was on his phone, too
Tearing down the road on the wrong side on his phone
No, you cannot do that
Stay at your side
And get used to that because certain countries it's gonna be chaos, I think it's gonna be
Wow, it's really odd landscape, isn't it? And there's still sheep down here
What a cool road actually this
Single lane
Basically marshland, isn't it?
Now I'm pretty sure like the UK and Ireland, I think they originally had trees on them
but then as
Humans kind of showed up and spread
They cut them all down
Now you get this
Okay, so I just pulled over to fly the drone and I hear this weird sound and
What are those birds
It's like a... what is that in the roof? Is that a peacock?
But it doesn't have its tail feathers up. Are those pea hens? I have no idea what those are
Very odd bird. Oh
There's more of those colorful ones back there
Okay, I have no idea and I have to go it's getting dark again I'm gonna arrive after dark again very typical
Yeah, there they are what are you it looks like a pea hen maybe there's a peacock oh there's more
Okay
Oh
It's getting dark I still have a fair ways to go to
Actually sunset still like in half more than half an hour away
It's just it's so dark so early with the clouds
All right. I just arrived at
the best Airbnb
So far I think
Okay. Well, it's just the one thing that's made me really happy
It's so awesome
Isn't that the best thing ever
I've never seen that before but yeah
If you want to impress your guests at Airbnb fold the toilet paper into a boat
But yeah the last two days were great I
Like seeing all this old stuff made out of stone
It's it's kind of crazy to me because I think if you grew up in Europe
Or actually in a lot of parts of the world you're kind of used to that kind of thing
but North America, we just don't get that at all and
Here it's just like everywhere and it's just cool to see so yeah, I just kind of enjoyed that
I like going up the hill
Because there's not a lot of off-road in Ireland to be honest so when I can find it, I'm happy
It was a lot more difficult than I thought a lot fairly muddy and all that. So
But yeah, it was just a good experience the only problem was at the top the view wasn't great
it's just fog, but
Yeah, maybe maybe I'll only have to go on a really really clear day next time I climb a mountain, but we'll see
but maybe we'll have a look at the map and
Just see where we've been
All right. So we started off in Cork
and
Got on this highway for a bit and then just scooted over this way
and
Got to around there. So that's around it might have been a little further actually like there
So that was I think it's called three castle head, but it's also called Meissen head or Meissen head
so after that backtracked and
Then drove up all these curly roads and then I went over the mountains here and there's these cool tunnels up there
and then kept going and
then
My Airbnb was right here, which was quite nice and then I just backtracked a little like I don't know like here
Maybe to get to that fort that circular fort
And then I went over here
Waterville, that's where I had lunch and
Dipped my feet into the ocean
and then the Kerry Cliffs are here, I believe and
then I did a loop like this and
There's no road on this map, but there's a road in here. So then I headed up. What did I do like this probably?
and
Now I'm in
trolley
Or near trolley at least
So there's the map so far. That's about that's four days and
Yeah, we're making some progress in Ireland here. So maybe that'll be the end of this video
I'll have some links on the screen
So if you want to see me go from Alaska across North America
That'll be act 3 and then if you want to see me get up to Alaska from my hometown of Abbotsford
That'll be act 2 and then of course, there'll be a link to the next video
Once it's live if it's live if if you're early, then it's not life. So, okay. Bye
