Our next guest is an Emmy and, as of last night,
Golden Globe-winning actor.
If you haven't yet, watch all the episodes of Shogun
streaming on Hulu now.
Please welcome Anna Sawai.
Please.
You brought me a gift.
I came to just bring it to show off.
May I hold it?
Yes, please.
Oh, wow.
It's really heavy.
Someone actually took it from me yesterday.
Somebody took it?
Yeah, he was like, can I hold it and take a picture?
So he just took a picture with it.
Who took it?
I don't know.
Oh, just some guy?
Yeah.
That's weird.
Without asking?
No, he asked.
Oh, he did ask.
OK.
Wow, that's really heavy.
That's surprisingly.
You can do some damage with this thing.
It's my workout thing now.
Yeah, like you need it when another one, right?
You got to.
How do you say Golden Globe in Japanese?
Golden Globe.
Oh.
Pretty straightforward, huh?
What about Daddy Saddle?
How do you say that in Japanese?
Daddy Saddle.
Your show won Best Drama.
You won Best Actress.
Your co-stars, you guys won all the categories, right?
Your co-stars won.
Everybody won.
That's got to be such a relief.
I mean, I was just so happy for Teddy, because I
really wanted him to get it.
It was four nominations for the whole group, and we got four.
So it's amazing.
I would imagine that that's got to be
a little bit uncomfortable if three of the four of you win,
and then one doesn't.
That's no fun at the after party.
Here's the thing.
I was the last one.
Oh, no, I wasn't the last one, but two cast already
got announced.
So if I didn't get it, I was going to be that one.
Oh, you were going to be the one.
You don't want to be the one.
Yeah, although it's probably less comfortable to be the one
than to be the other three, until you get home, of course.
But you gave, I think, the shortest speech
in award show history, right?
Yes.
You really went up there and you said, thank you.
I'll thank everyone later.
No, here's the thing.
So my category was the 22nd, and I
could see that everyone was starting
to get a little bit tired.
I'm no Demi Moore, so everyone would
love to hear her speech, even if she spoke for minutes.
That's so considerate of you.
No, but if it were me, no one knows me.
They don't want to hear who I want to thank,
so I was just like, thank you.
Can I tell you something?
I've been involved in these award shows,
and when somebody gives a short speech like that,
it makes everyone behind the scenes so very happy.
Did anyone thank you for giving the short speech?
No, but a lot of people came up to me
and told me that it was their favorite speech.
That's nice.
And did you go around and thank all those people,
as you said you would?
I tried to.
Some people, yes, and some people,
I haven't been able to text yet.
So can I just say thank you, and I will text you back later.
OK, yeah, yeah.
And they know who they are, I assume.
Probably, yes.
You won an Emmy a few months ago, and I sent you a gift,
and I heard that I caused you some unnecessary confusion.
Yes.
Yes, I apologize for that.
I guess I didn't explain what the gift was in the note.
I don't know why I assumed you would just
understand what the gift was.
So I had it sent to Tokyo, because I have my Emmy in Tokyo,
and my mom received a box, like a big box, on my behalf,
and she opens it and sends me a picture.
And you brought this picture along,
so I'm going to show this.
And you see here, this is the gift.
This is the gift, and I'm like, I have no idea what it is.
Can you read the card for me?
And it literally said, congratulations on your Emmy.
And I'm even more confused.
I'm like, I have to know the answer.
I should know the answer.
So I go through all your videos to see
if you've ever talked about a wig, a colorful wig,
but it never came up.
You did research.
Yes, because I thought I should know.
But then I gave up.
After a couple of days, I talked to my team,
and my publicist Alex was like, it's a wig for your Emmy.
It is a wig for your Emmy.
That's right.
It's a wig for your Emmy.
Smart team.
I mean, I'm a dumb host, but you've got a smart team.
Yeah, I probably should have explained that.
Why didn't you write anything?
I don't know.
I don't remember.
I have no idea what I was doing or what.
But I did get you another gift, because I don't want you
to be the only one without one.
And this is even more special, I think.
I'm going to size this up.
Now, this is a Shogun wig.
Oh my god!
OK, yeah, there you go.
This is perfect.
I thought something was missing.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
And if you don't want to use anything,
it'll also serve as a nice mustache for you, too.
All right, well, there you go.
Yeah, that's for that.
I will set that aside.
What did you do for the new year?
Did you have, were you back in Tokyo?
I was back in Tokyo.
I spent time with my family, and it's a tradition
to go to the shrine or temple on the first.
We call it Hatsumode.
And you pray for a good year, and you also draw a fortune.
So I drew a fortune.
Is there like a bowl with fortunes in it?
There's a little thing that you shuffle,
and a number comes out.
And so you just tell them your number.
And when I told them 19, they were like, 19?
I opened my fortune, and it's the worst one
that you can get.
So there's like great luck, good luck, luck, small luck,
bad luck.
I got bad luck.
You got bad luck?
Yes.
I was so upset.
It's the 1st of January.
I'm like super upset the whole day.
So the next day, I decide to go to a different shrine.
And this one, I have to.
That's allowed?
You can just keep going from shrine to shrine
till you get the one you want?
I think it's OK.
And also, I went to one that was more focused on the arts.
So I took my agent TJ, because he was in Japan, and my sister.
And we go, and I draw my fortune, and it was good luck.
And so now, I feel like in my work, I'll have very good luck.
Things will prosper.
And in my private life, something might crash.
Oh, that's no good.
That's terrible.
Well, at least I'm working.
Well, yeah, I guess so, yeah.
Well, this is good luck, right?
I mean, this proves that you had some good luck, I guess.
But who knows what's to come?
You know what it said?
It said, if you leave on the 3rd, it's very good.
And I left the 3rd, Japan.
And then I got this.
So I feel like it really is true.
Did you do anything when you went to Tokyo?
Yeah, I did everything.
Well, like, did you go to the shrine, and did you draw?
I did.
I went to a shrine.
Did you draw your fortune?
No, I didn't know about that.
That was, I mean, is that just a New Year's thing,
or are you supposed to?
No, you can do it anytime.
No one told us about that, yeah.
I was just yelling at my kids, mostly.
Don't touch that.
We're in a shrine.
They were having too much fun.
They were running around like crazy people, yeah.
We saw monkeys, though.
Oh, up north?
No, not that far north.
I mean, we climbed up a hill.
Does that count as north?
Maybe, yeah, it's north-ish.
Do you know there's, like, a monkey park there?
There's, like, a place where?
Oh, Nikko.
Sure.
I think it's Nikko.
I think maybe that might be it, yeah.
But there were definitely monkeys, that I remember.
Other than that, I have no details.
Yeah, yeah, but you don't, that doesn't ring a bell?
I mean, there are monkeys, but not in Tokyo.
No, we went to Kyoto as well, yes.
Are there monkeys in Kyoto?
I don't know.
They're deer.
Yes, they're darling, yeah.
Oh, you mean there are deer, yes.
Yes, there were also deer.
Yes, but deer, we got deer all over.
There's deer in the parking lot here, right?
Oh, really?
Oh, yeah, the place is crawling with deer.
We don't get excited about deer, but we see a monkey,
we go nuts.
They say they bring good luck, you know?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is good luck.
Well, congratulations to you, and thank you for coming.
It's great to have you here.
We love Chogunwood, but you can watch it on Hulu,
and you're in Pachinko on Apple TV Plus as well.
Yes, please do it in.
All right, well, there you go.
Anna Sawai, everybody.
We'll be right back with Belinda Lindens.
