How you doin'?
That's right! I got to try the Fujifilm X-E5 before you!
If you want to see me using the Fujifilm X-E5,
you have to head over to the Adorama channel
because I teamed up with them to do a little bit of a showcase.
So there you'll see my photographs,
you'll see me being an idiot.
Please go to the Adorama channel
and show me some love there with a little comment
and say hello to Seth Miranda here.
Seth Miranda's, you know, pizza box reflector.
You can use the, you know, the wax paper
that's inside the pizza box to diffuse your light.
We have a silver reflector.
Oh, hey!
All right, story time.
The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box
was the first impression was how heavy it was.
I had previously reviewed the Fujifilm X-M5
and that definitely was an entry level,
a little more plasticky camera.
But anyway, the first thing I noticed
was its heft and build quality
is definitely better than the X-M5.
Also, one thing I'm noticing
with some of the newer cameras
is that the leatherette
sometimes feels more plasticky than other times.
So there must be different grades of that material.
Yes, the X-M5 is in a different category
than the X-E5.
So with the release of the Fujifilm X-E4,
its predecessor,
Fujifilm's aim was to sort of make,
you know, distractions go away,
get rid of all buttons,
get rid of all dials.
But it made the camera a little harder to use.
I was not really a fan of the minimalism.
So we got some stuff back.
And I kind of like this about Fujifilm.
They definitely,
if you look at other camera brands,
no names,
they definitely stick to the same formula,
camera after camera.
And it reminds me of two things.
Number one is like bands.
You know, you love the music from a certain era,
an album.
But then when they try to change,
you kind of,
you don't,
you're not on board,
OK?
Fujifilm throws things against the wall,
see what sticks.
They're just trying things.
But here on the Fujifilm X-E5,
we now have a rear dial.
And we also have more function buttons.
So there's a little switch on the front
that has a function button you can push in.
There's a function button on the back.
And I found that
it was easier to use the camera
than the predecessor X-E4.
The next thing I noticed was the screen.
It's a fully articulating screen
and one of my favorite kinds.
Now,people who knock this kind of screen
are always saying that
you can't put a microphone
on top of the camera.
Kind of totally agree with that.
But personally,
I find that this is more
photography-based camera.
And I think that
I really like to tilt it
so that I can look down
and capture moments,
you know,stealthy like.
Next thing I did was check the battery.
And then I was like,
it's not the new one.
And that's a little tough
because especially if you have
image stabilization going on
and you have like the screen on,
it could really drain your battery.
So it's not,
it's not wonderful.
Let's just say that.
Also,there's a built-in grip.
Again,with the X-E4,
the minimalism,
they completely made it
like an ice cream bar with no grip.
So this one has a little bit,
it's a little bit easier to hold,
which is fantastic.
The next thing that struck me
was the little recipe dial.
And when I first saw it,
I was kind of like,
oh,I like this implementation better.
If you're going to do a recipe dial,
I would have preferred,
again,design.
I'm not a camera designer,
but I would have preferred
if that full window right there
was a big ISO window,
you know,like ginormous numbers
that are magnified,
kind of like a Rolex watch,
you know,window.
But Fujifilm really is doubling down
on this whole film sim dial.
And they have the best sims.
So they might as well,
you know,put them out there.
And I definitely,
and I mentioned this in my X-T50 video
that I really do like to see
what happens to one of the colors
with all the film sims.
So I do like the film sim dial
to change on the fly that way.
But in reality,
when you make a recipe
or when you have a film sim
that's your favorite,
it's pretty much parked there.
So sometimes the film sim dial
kind of collects a little bit of dust.
So I would have preferred it
to be a drive dial.
And we'll talk about that in a second.
But actually ISO dial
would have been super awesome.
I also found it interesting
that this was the first time
in the menu,Fujifilm menu,
that the word recipe was used.
And the word recipe for me
I first saw on the Fuji X Weekly site,
which Richie runs.
Hi,Richie,if you're watching.
And just the community creating,
you know,film emulations
called recipes.
And Fujifilm,
I don't know if they've teamed up with Richie,
but they use the word,
and there's no copyright
on the word recipe.
But moving forward,
it'd be great if Fujifilm
can sort of preload
or do what Nikon is doing,
which is with the app,
you can send recipes
without having to punch in
like the white balance
and move over and the clarity.
So yeah,
that maybe is something for the future.
Next thing out of the box
is the 23mm 2.8.
I thought this was a great idea.
I do love the 27mm,
which is kind of almost,
it's like a 40mm equivalent.
But a 35mm equivalent
a little wider for street,
I think makes sense.
And it also is for people
who maybe can't get an X100 series camera.
I thought it made the camera
like a perfect size.
But then when I first tested the lens,
and this is not an official
sort of review,
but the lens sort of has the same
kind of,you know,
autofocus motors,
like you can hear them and all that.
Again,this is pre-production.
Here's the 23mm 2.8
with the X-Pro.
Not really seeing that pumping.
Again,this was a pre-production model,
pre-production firmware.
So take that with a grain of salt.
But I definitely noticed the lens,
you know,moving.
All right.
So for Adorama,
I needed to make content.
So the first thing I did
was I went out
and took some cityscapes
from Weehawken,New Jersey.
And we have 40 megapixels.
And 40 megapixels is great
for detailed work.
And I think people are going to,
the benefit with 40 megapixels
is more detail.
The negative of 40 megapixels
is more detail.
And I think if you're doing street photography
and you sort of are in love
with the Fujifilm system,
you come from a place where film
and sort of soft character
is a little bit more your vibe
than crystal clear,
clarity kind of stuff.
Now,when I was doing the cityscapes,
I also noticed the IBIS.
OK,testing the handheld IBIS.
Handheld IBIS here.
The handheld IBIS.
Handheld IBIS recording 4K 60.
And I think it's probably
one of the biggest features of this camera
is the image stabilization
because a lot of the older cameras
don't have image stabilization,
but they have video features.
And so that really limits
what you can kind of do
with what lenses you have.
You need a lens that has optical stabilization.
But I found that that was the most fun
to shoot a little bit of video,
you know,of the cityscape and the sounds
and then shoot some photographs.
So I only had a few days with the camera.
So the next morning,freezing morning,
but I went to the Manhattan Bridge,
which,by the way, is completely overdone.
Shooting the city downtown and Chinatown
from the bridge through the fence
is something that's very popular.
But I decided to go with something safe
because I needed to shoot as much as I could
for the Adorama video.
But it's always nice there anyway.
Who cares if other people have done it?
Who cares? I didn't do it.
So I went.
I shot through the fence.
I got all the tropey shots.
And again,I slapped on a wide lens
for the first time, which was neat.
And I got to see what the image stabilization
did while vlogging.
Although the audio,
I didn't have a microphone
and the train kept going by
and it was so windy.
This is what that sounds like.
X-E5 with no microphone.
This is the internal microphone.
10mm
So unusable.
But it was really nice to see.
That was a Reala Ace simulation,I think.
And yeah, the video looked so pleasant.
I didn't change anything on there.
It was straight out of camera.
Which is how I like to shoot,by the way.
I don't like to shoot in log and grade
and go through all the different looks.
I just want to turn the camera on
and record some video.
Because of the IBIS,
I was able to get some slow shutter speed shots.
And that's what IBIS is great for as well.
Your background can be completely still.
And then you can get like streaks of lights.
And it was in the morning and it was bright.
So I was able to get a few cars that were blurry.
But I think if I went out at night,
it would have been super cool.
Then I walked around Chinatown.
I took some street photos in Chinatown.
And this is where I noticed
as I was filming video and photo
that I was a little annoyed usability-wise
by the drive mode.
So with my Nikon Z6 III,
which I'm using here to record myself now
and the Z8 and also the X-T20,
all of them have drive dials
that you can switch to video very quickly.
Sony A7 IV is another example.
And as a hybrid shooter,
ZF,that's another one,sorry.
I'm just like naming cameras now.
All of them are like video, video, video.
Switch,pop,pop,pop.
Video,video.
This is you have to push a button
and you actually have to go up one to video
that when you want to go to.
It's a little bit slower
because you have to do it through the menu
as opposed to a switch.
So personally,I prefer cameras with a switch
because I'm a hybrid shooter
when I go out and shoot.
All right.
And then the third time I went out
to do photography for Adorama
was I went to Soho
and the aim here was to sort of pick a recipe.
I made three recipes
because that's what's cool about the camera
is you can put three of your own recipes
onto the dial.
And I was going to shoot all three.
But what ended up happening
was I was looking at the back of the camera
and one of them sort of like
Wes Anderson-y kind of.
I can't,I apologize.
I can't remember where I stole the recipe from.
It was definitely either X Weekly
or was a YouTube video I watched
and then I tweaked it to myself.
So it really is mine.
But that's kind of what's cool
about the recipe community
like Reggie who did Reggie's portrait.
People shared that all over.
He didn't make any money off that.
He didn't make any money off that
and people kind of love that recipe
because it looks really,really good.
So I was shooting in sort of like zone focusing.
I was like F8 trying to capture moments
and what ended up happening
was I did a little auto focus test
of my daughter with the 23mm.
She just ran at me 8 frames a second
and I'm checking them
and they're all in focus,right?
I was like what?
What's going on here Fuji?
So I decided to go out another day
because I was like,you know
I was shooting everything with F11,F8
just so that everything would be in focus.
I said let me go out and try to shoot at 2.8
and use the AF like the tracking
and it didn't hit every shot
but the camera I've kind of just
used the wide zone
and let the camera pick a face
and sometimes without even looking
and I was capturing moments at 2.8
and so I found again it's pre-production
I don't know if,you know
will they make it worse post-production?
By the way going back to the Soho
those were my favorite photos for the feel
not for the resolution
not for any kind of gimmicky stuff
it was just how the light was hitting
and what people were doing
and yeah,that's my photography
we should pause
yeah,we're talking about a camera here
but we should talk about that
the tool you use is secondary
to mood and light and color and moments
so going out with any camera
don't worry about upgrading or buying
go out with any camera and capture something
OK,what the heck just happened?
We need,what the?
My background, this was one of my favorite photos
that I captured by the way
and this was with the face detection
and that mural was in the background
and it detected her face
and I didn't have to focus
It didn't affect
It didn't detect the mural face
which was pretty interesting
I would say the top feature is
in the box you get a rope
That's right,a rope strap
That was the first time I ever seen a hip cool strap
in a camera box
so that was kind of neat
No,that's not the main feature
but that is pretty cool
I'm gonna say image stabilization is great
I'm gonna say the video looks fantastic
6K video,you have a beautiful look
especially the silver one
I got the black one to try
but silver one with a silver 23mm lens
gives you the X100 look which is great
Good function buttons
The camera seems quality
Those are all bonus,bonus,bonus
The things that were kind of
You know, not deal breakers and not negatives
The 40 megapixels is something
you're gonna need to decide
if it's important to you
If you look side by side
40 versus 26 megapixels
From far away you can't really tell a difference
It's only when you're cropping in
And speaking of cropping in
This camera advertises that
That you can just walk around with one lens
And you can, with the little lever
You can sort of crop in
I prefer to crop in post
But reality is 23mm
Sometimes it's a little wide
And if something's happening across the street
Or you wanna go in a little bit
Sometimes it's kinda nice to just punch in
Cause you know you're gonna crop
All the junk on the outside anyway
But I don't know if it's useful enough
To take up the function buttons
Cause you can,you know
The function of the little switch
You can make that whatever you want
I did enjoy the 40 megapixels for my cityscapes
However I think that
Personally the way I use Fujifilm cameras
Is I kinda wanna just capture moments
And street photography
And so 24 megapixels of the older cameras
To me,I like
Another meh is the battery
It's not a deal breaker
But you need to get more than one battery
I did notice when I put a little plate on the bottom
It didn't block the door
Which I thought was really cool
Another meh for me
Cause I don't really use my phone
While I'm using my camera
But there's a new Bluetooth button
To kinda like send your photos
To your phone
Alright the last one we should
Pretty much talk about is price
Because I don't know the price of the camera
But just by looking at the rumors
Which are usually pretty close
It seems like it's gonna be kind of expensive
So that brings up the question
And we have the same question with the X-Half online
Is it worth it for that much
Well if it's not worth it to you
You're not gonna buy the camera
You're just mad because you can't buy the camera
It's the same how I feel about a Leica
I'm just mad about them prices
So that's something
That's a little unfortunate
With what's going on now
But maybe it'll change in the future
And the prices will lower
And the X-Half wasn't supposed to be
849 US dollars
100% not supposed to be
And the same with this camera
It's not supposed to be at this price
Anyway tell me what you think in the comments
And I'll see you guys next time
Peace
