The Guardians are 40 and 44 second place in the AL Central 12 and a half back of Detroit
They have lost six in a row including the first two games against the Cubs 5 to 2 on Tuesday 5 to 4 on Wednesday
The Cubs are 51 and 35 first place in the NL Central
Another beautiful night here at Wrigley Field as the Guardians try to snap a season-long
six-game losing streak. The youngster Cade Horton on the mound, 6'1", 2'11", 23 years of age
3-0 pitch is outside, a four-pitch walk to start and boy is that something this Guardians offense could certainly use
There goes the runner, the pitch is high, throw to second on the money, got it!
You talk about a perfect throw from the catcher, Reese McGuire
All Dansby Swanson had to do was catch the ball and just hold the glove right there
The runner slid right into the glove, the Guardians do not score, we go to the bottom of the first
Let's see if the Cubs can jump out early, nothing, nothing game
Joey Cantillo gets the start, 25 years old from Hawaii
Originally a 16th round pick by the Padres in 2017
All of his appearances this year have been in relief but he was sent down to start at AAA and then called back up
So he stretched out some, we'll see how deep he can get in this one
Scoreless game in the batter, Segar Suzuki
Having a monster year, 23 homers, 73 knocked in
On the ground, hit right field
And it's a two-out single for Suzuki and here is Pete Crow Armstrong
Bounce to first, Santana will take it himself
Good start here in the first for Joey Cantillo
Scoreless game, inning number two, the batter is Lane Thomas
Here's your two, swing and a miss
Swing and a miss, strike three, Lane Thomas is out number two
Here comes the next pitch, swing and a miss, strike three
Cade Wharton pretty dominant so far, two shutout innings
Boy what a great opportunity for Joey Cantillo
At least from now through the all-star break to maybe re-establish himself
Only now in the Cleveland rotation, the pitch, got him
Swinging and another great changeup away
Cantillo strikes out Swanson, first strikeout, one down in the second
Swung, out and missed, really good pitching from Joey Cantillo here in inning number two
He sets him down, one, two, three
Top of the order, Steven Kwan
Two outs, nobody on, scoreless here in the third
Steven Kwan walked to start the game on four pitches then was caught stealing
Base hit left field, two outs single for Steven Kwan
Guardian's first hit of the evening
And here's Kyle Manzardo
Line drive left field, half is there
And that ends the inning, let's see if the Cubs can get on the board
Nothing, nothing game
So that's the first walk given up by Joey Cantillo
It comes with two down in this scoreless third
And Kyle Tucker, the D.H. to the plate, fly down his first time up
And that one bounces in
And so after getting the first two back-to-back walks
And now an opportunity for Seah Suzuki
The 0-2, swing and a miss
And Joey Cantillo gets out of trouble with a really good changeup
His fourth strikeout of the night
Ramirez now, maybe I should say this quietly, Ron
He's 0 for 10 in the series
Carlos Santana will step in
And here comes
Swing and a miss, he went changeup
And he got him, that's a good pitch right there
Four shutout innings for Cade Horton
Let's see if the Cubs can get on the board
We go to the bottom of the fourth, nothing, nothing game
Went away, bottom of the fourth inning, nothing, nothing game
Brown, swats in a one-out single
Cubs have their second hit of the game
And it brings up Nico Horner
And Nico has just taken ball four
Steven Boat out to the mound
He's going to make the pitching change right here
Left-hander Eric Sabrowski
Making his third appearance for Cleveland
He comes into a situation with two men on base, one out
And facing the left-handed hitting Michael Bush
Got him looking, throws him with a fastball
Yes he did
Sabrowski with a huge strikeout
Now there's two down in the inning
And he'll face Matt Shaw
Here's the pitch to him
He swings and drills it high and deep to left center
This is trouble
Thomas tracking it, makes the catch
Midway through the warning track in the gap
Fine running catch by Thomas
And this game will remain scoreless as a result
As we head to the fifth, Guardians nothing, Cubs nothing
And the Guardians have just their second hit
It's a one-out single here in the fifth
Fote Naylor will bat, he'll fly to center his first time up
Ground ball up the middle, it's through
On his way to third goes Steven
And that seeing eye single for Fote Naylor
Puts runners on the corners for the Guardians
With only one out, here in the top of the fifth
Brian Rocchio will bat
There goes Naylor, pitch is high, throw to second
Tag!
Out at second
The second spectacular throw from Reese McGuire
And a great, I mean great tag by Dansby Swanson
Cubs can get out of this inning with no runs
Rocchio bounces one to second, fielded on a high hop by Horner
The flip to first in time
And the Cubs work out of the jam
One-out single for Manzardo here in the sixth
Here's Jose Ramirez fly-out lineup
He's now hitless in his last 19 at-bats
The one-two, swing and a miss
And Horton doing it with that change-up
It's been excellent here tonight
You can just tell Jose's very anxious right now at the plate
That's into dirt, runner takes off on a bounce
Tag and he got him!
Have a night, Reese McGuire
Cade Horton pitching great ball tonight
Six shutout innings and he's going to keep on going here in inning number seven
Swing and a miss, got him to chase on the heater
Santana is gone
So six and a third innings now for Cade Horton
That's a new career high
Hopped up, that's on the infield
Swanson
And Cade Horton will fix his paint legs
And get to work to try and register the third out of the inning
And Horton fires
Got him reaching
Out towards center, Pete Crow Armstrong
Out number three
Seven shutout innings for Cade Horton
Hunter Gattis to work the seventh for Cleveland, no score
Cleveland with Cantelo, Cebrowski, Smith
Combining for six innings of two hit shutout baseball
Oh, a diving catch by Roque on a line drive to end the inning
Parallel to the ground, he robs Shaw of a base hit
And will go to the eighth
Cleveland, Chicago scoreless
The left hander
Tanks over in the eighth, no score
A brilliant outing by the rookie Cade Horton
Seven shutout innings, 90 pitches made, five hits allowed
What a way, a man at first, nothing, nothing game
And Steven Kwan ready to step in
Line drive, base hit, left center field
Steven Kwan extends the rally for Cleveland
As Angel Martinez moves into scoring position
And Drew Pomerantz, who hasn't given up an earned run
All season long
In hot water now with Kyle Manzardo, the batter
One, two, right there, he throws him, struck him out
And that is a big second out in this eighth inning
Craig Council to the mound with Jose Ramirez due up
Craig is going to make a change
One of the better switch hitters in recent memory, Jose Ramirez
Towards left center, Pete Coarmstrong, he's got it
Ryan Brazier retires, Jose Ramirez
And Craig Council hoping that the Cubs
Can figure out a way to win it here in the ninth
Against the closer, Emmanuel Plassé
One down, no score, bottom of inning number nine
And the batter is Pete Coarmstrong
Now here's a matchup where it's fun to watch Major League Baseball
When guys like this face off against each other
Plassé, oh my goodness, he tried to tag him
Almost was a disaster
Plassé didn't know if he should throw or tag him
And then he tagged the diving Armstrong
Who went in to first, head first
Cleveland pitching had retired 16 in a row
Winning run at first, two down in the ninth
No score, Nico Horner the batter
0-0 for two of the walk
The pitch hit high, hit deep
Comes to the middle of the track, makes the catch
We've got extra innings
Chris Flexen, right hander
He has been outstanding, 15 games
A 4-0 record, wins and losses
And a microscopic ERA of 0.64
Boy, two big outs for the Cubs here
In extra innings, Flexen making some good pitches
Pushy comes over and makes a nice sliding catch
But now the dangerous Stephen Kwan is the batter
Fly ball to left, going back
Ian Hap still going, gets there, he's got it
No runs for the Guardians
Cubs have a chance to win it now in the bottom of the 10th
So Bush, able to move the runner
And now Max Shaw has a chance to be a hero
He's already delivered one walk-off single
That was against the Rockies on May 27th
Enfield comes in, winning run at third
Backs some more, reaches out and he makes the catch
Horner will tag, Cubs win!
Shaw wins it!
And the Cubs continue to roll
Matt Shaw drives in, the game's winning run
Cubs win 1-0 in 10
