According to the FDA, clinical studies approved by the Biden administration
have sent living cells from American citizens to China and other hostile actors.
These studies are now paused for a comprehensive review.
The agency warns that hostile states can abuse DNA data to threaten U.S. public safety.
In December, the Biden administration approved an extensive exception
that made it possible for American companies to send biological samples, including DNA,
to companies linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
The exception was enforced in April.
Now the FDA, under the Trump administration,
states that there is more and more evidence that certain clinical studies
have used biological material from American citizens without their knowledge or consent.
This lack of transparency poses a serious security risk,
and therefore the agency has now paused the program.
In the future, companies must be completely transparent with the agencies,
collect ethical consent from participants,
and handle all sensitive material only within U.S. borders.
Studies that do not meet these requirements must not continue.
