Lost dog found after one year, thanks to hidden camera.
Walter, a golden retriever, went missing during a family trip.
His owners, Kate and Curtis, had traveled from their home in New Hampshire to visit
family in Missouri more than 1,000 miles away.
While they were there, Walter got scared and ran off.
They searched everywhere. They made flyers. They extended their trip.
They even got help from a rescue group called Lost Paws Trapping.
But no matter what they tried, Walter was nowhere to be found.
The days turned into weeks. Then the weeks became months.
Still, no sign of him. Kate and Curtis were heartbroken,
but they never gave up hope.
A Mysterious Message
Almost one full year later, Kate received a message on Facebook.
It included two blurry photos of a golden-colored dog in a field.
The images were hard to see clearly, but Kate noticed something.
There was something about the way he was standing, she said.
In my heart, I knew it was him.
Even so, she didn't want to get too excited. She had been let down many times before.
Soon after, they found out that a local business owner had been seeing the same
dog on his security camera for about six weeks.
It was always the same dog, always walking by alone, setting the camera trap.
With this new lead, the team at Lost Paws Trapping set up a feeding station and a trail camera.
The first night, there was no sign of the dog.
But on the second night, just after midnight on a Friday the 13th, he appeared.
The dog ate the food, left, and came back again and again.
He visited the feeding station more than 10 times.
Kate saw the footage and immediately knew.
It was 100%, my baby boy.
A Flight of Hope
Filled with hope, Kate flew to St. Louis.
She wanted to be there in person, just in case it really was Walter.
The first night, Walter didn't come.
The second night, the camera caught something that made Kate laugh and cry.
The dog had picked up the food bowl in his mouth and ran off with it.
That playful behavior? It was exactly what Walter used to do.
The moment they waited for, they set up a humane trap.
Walter was safely caught.
As Kate walked up to the trap, Walter looked at her.
Then he started to whimper.
He recognized her voice.
He knew who she was.
Everyone around began to cry.
Walter, though dirty and covered in fleas, jumped with joy.
He licked Kate's face and wagged his tail like crazy.
Back home where he belongs.
The journey back home was full of emotion.
On the way, Kate and Walter stopped in Cleveland, Ohio to meet Curtis.
Walter was so happy he couldn't decide where to go first.
He ran back and forth between Kate and Curtis, his tail wagging the whole time.
It was as if he was making sure they were really both there.
When they got home to their new house-a-place,
Walter had never even been before he walked in, like he had always lived there.
He curled up, calm and happy, finally home.
A story of love and never giving up.
Walter's story is a powerful reminder
of the strength and loyalty that lives in animals and in the people who love them.
Despite being lost in the wild for almost a full year, Walter survived.
He stayed near people but far enough to avoid danger.
And in the end, he found his way back home.
Kate shared her gratitude in a message online.
Thank you to all of Walter's warriors for never giving up.
Every flyer, every stakeout, every door knocked,
every kind word it meant everything to us.
We will never forget it.
Walter's happy ending shows that hope is never wasted
and love can bring even the lost ones home again.
