The Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck
Episode 1 Jemima is Upset
Jemima Puddle Duck was upset.
I don't like the farmer's wife, she said.
Why? asked her sister Rebecca.
She took my eggs, cried Jemima.
She gave them to the hens to hatch.
This was true.
The farmer's wife took all the duck's eggs.
But Rebecca didn't mind.
I'm glad she took my eggs, said Rebecca.
I don't have time to sit on them.
Jemima was still upset.
I want to hatch my own eggs, she said.
That's silly, said Rebecca.
You would get bored.
Then you'd forget about your eggs.
Jemima didn't listen.
She tried to hide her eggs.
She hid them all over the farm.
She hid them in an onion patch.
She hid them behind some pots.
She hid them under a bucket.
Farmer's wife always found them.
Jemima stomped her foot.
That's it, she said.
I am leaving this farm.
I'll lay my eggs in another place.
And then I'll hatch them.
Jemima hiked up a big hill.
From the top, she saw a forest.
It was very far away.
I'll lay my eggs there, she said.
Jemima ran and flapped her wings.
Up, up, up she went.
Jemima flew through the air.
Soon, she was flying over the forest.
She saw a nice spot and landed.
Jemima took a few steps and stopped.
A stranger sat on a tree stump.
He wore fancy clothes.
Jemima didn't know that he was a fox.
The fox looked up from his newspaper.
He smiled.
Hello, said the fox.
Are you lost?
What a nice gentleman, thought Jemima.
No, I'm not lost, she said.
I need a place to lay my eggs.
The fox grinned.
I love eggs, he said.
And I love little ducklings.
Oh? said Jemima.
Come with me, dear, said the fox.
His teeth sparkled in the sun.
You can lay your eggs in my shed.
They will be very safe there.
THE TALE OF JEMIMA PUDDLEDUCK
EPISODE 3
NINE EGGS
The fox led Jemima to his shed.
Jemima looked inside.
Hmm, said Jemima.
Why are there so many feathers in there?
The fox didn't answer.
It does look warm and cozy, said Jemima.
So Jemima went in.
She gathered straw and feathers.
Soon she had a nice, warm nest.
I'll be back tomorrow, she said.
I'll take care of your nest,
said the fox.
You're so kind, said Jemima.
Thank you.
Each day Jemima came to the shed.
She went inside and laid an egg.
Then she went home in the evening.
Each night the fox counted the eggs.
He turned them over and smiled.
They're so big, he said.
They look delicious.
At last, nine eggs filled the nest.
I'm done, Jemima said.
I'll be back tomorrow.
Then I'll stay until my eggs hatch.
Wonderful, said the fox.
He licked his lips.
Please bring some herbs tomorrow, he said.
I will cook a big dinner for us.
Jemima picked some herbs.
The dinner will be lovely, she said.
Kep, the farm dog, looked up.
Dinner? he said.
Jemima told him about the nice gentleman.
What does he look like? asked Kep.
Jemima told him.
Where does he live? asked Kep.
Jemima told him that, too.
Hmm, said Kep.
Then he ran off.
Jemima flew back to the forest.
The gentleman was sniffing the air.
He looked nervous.
For our dinner, Jemima said.
The fox jumped.
Oh, it's you, he said.
Get inside now.
Jemima gasped.
My friend is mean today, she thought.
Jemima went into the shed.
Suddenly, wham!
The door slammed shut.
Jemima heard barks, growls, and howls.
Oh, dear, she said.
What's going on?
Soon, it was quiet.
Someone opened the door.
It was Kep!
Kep gave Jemima a bag.
Put your eggs inside, he said.
The dog took Jemima home.
She found a new hiding spot.
Soon, she hatched some ducklings.
Tom Kitten Goes Fishing
Episode 1
Tom Meets a Frog
Tom Kitten was playing outside.
Time to clean up, his mother called.
My friends are coming for tea later.
Mrs. Twitchit washed Mitten's face.
She brushed Moppet's fur.
Then Mrs. Twitchit frowned.
Tom! Mrs. Twitchit cried.
Come inside right now!
Mittens and Moppet put on pink dresses.
Tom wore a clean shirt and new pants.
Mrs. Twitchit looked around the room.
I need some pretty flowers, she said.
Tom dashed outside.
I'll get some flowers, he said.
Mrs. Twitchit sighed.
Don't get dirty, she said.
Tom ran toward the pond.
He didn't see any pretty flowers.
But a frog sat on a boat.
I'm Jeremy Fisher, the frog said.
Can you help me find flowers?
Tom asked.
Yes, Jeremy said.
Can you help me find fish?
Tom looked down at his clean clothes.
I must not get wet, he thought.
But mother needs flowers.
Tom stepped into Jeremy's boat.
Drip, drop.
Suddenly, it started to rain.
Jeremy paddled the boat across the pond.
Rain poured down.
Tom said, I'm getting wet.
Jeremy put on a raincoat.
But Tom didn't have a raincoat.
Then Tom spotted a pail.
He put it on his head.
Tom smiled.
Now I will stay dry.
Suddenly, Tom felt something slimy.
A worm slid down Tom's face.
Another one crawled along his arm.
Worms climbed into his pocket.
Tom laughed.
Worms are funny.
Jeremy stopped paddling and frowned.
Tom, those worms are for fishing.
Tom gave Jeremy some worms.
Jeremy put a worm on his hook.
Jeremy and Tom waited for a while.
The rain stopped.
Fish, Tom asked.
Jeremy laughed.
In the water.
Tom sighed.
Fishing is boring, he thought.
And I need to find mother's flowers.
Thump, thump.
Something bumped into the boat.
Tom jumped.
What was that, he said.
Tom Kitten Goes Fishing
Episode 3 A Big Fish
Fish! Jeremy cried.
Finally! Tom said.
He was happy.
Soon, they could look for the flowers.
Bump, bump.
Tom looked at the water.
Small fish swam all around the boat.
They are minnows, Jeremy said.
Tom did not have a fishing rod.
But he had a paw.
He swatted at the water.
No, Tom, Jeremy said.
You will scare away all the fish.
Tom frowned.
Suddenly, something pulled on Jeremy's rod.
Jeremy cried.
Jeremy pulled hard on the rod.
Tom pulled, too.
But the fish was very strong.
Tom cried.
He almost slipped off the boat.
Tom was getting tired.
He wanted to rest.
One more time, Jeremy said.
Let's pull.
Tom and Jeremy pulled hard on the rod.
Splash!
Finally, the fish popped out of the water.
But it was not a minnow.
This fish was shiny.
It had sharp teeth.
It's a giant trout, Jeremy yelled.
Tom yelled.
The trout was very strong.
It flopped back into the water.
Jeremy's rod flew through the air.
So did Jeremy and Tom.
Splash! Splash!
Tom and Jeremy climbed back on the boat.
Tom looked at his wet clothes.
Mother will be very angry, he said.
Jeremy started paddling the boat again.
I don't like fishing, Tom said.
Me neither, Jeremy said.
Shall we look for flowers now?
Tom looked down.
His clothes were a mess.
Oh, I have another idea, he said.
Tom ran home.
Mrs. Twitchit's friends were there.
Everyone was sipping tea.
Tom! Mrs. Twitchit said.
You're all wet.
And where are the flowers?
Tom smiled.
I couldn't find any flowers, Mother.
But I have a better surprise.
Tom reached into his pocket.
He pulled out wiggling worms.
Mittens and Moppet giggled.
Mrs. Twitchit's friends laughed.
Everyone liked Tom's surprise.
Except Mother.
