A golf tournament close to the heart of
one of our very own 22 News anchors.
Sierra Spelleller was held earlier this
morning. 22 News reporter Claire Overton
has the meaning behind the Jeffrey
Spellellar Foundation for Change Golf
tournament.
This was always a dream of my dad's and
seeing it come into fruition is so
meaningful to us. The Jeffrey Spellellar
Foundation for Change golf tournament is
in honor of 22 News evening anchor Sara
Spellellar's father, Jeffrey. He was an
avid golfer and passed away in 2023.
Since then, Carara and her mother, Mela,
have been keeping Jeffrey's legacy and
goals alive. We are just really thrilled
to be giving back to deserving children
who will learn the game of golf. Um, and
my dad really credited golf for
positively shaping and changing his
life. And we just look forward to having
other young children have their lives
positively shaped through this game as
well.
120 golfers and countless others came
together for the cause. Some friends and
family, others strangers that have
turned into family. I was a big fan of
Sierra. So he was sitting down sitting
down and I asked I said, "Excuse me, Mr.
Spelleller, my mom and I are big fans of
your daughter. You mind if I have take a
picture with her?" He was like, "Oh,
sure. Go on, young man. Do your thing."
And uh we took the photo and from that
point on we we've been family. Many of
the golfers resonate with Jeffrey's
mission. It's not only, you know,
preparing them and teaching them and
helping them, but building a generation
that can understand that there's lots of
other sports out there like basketball,
football, but golf is also an option.
Even in just the second year, the
foundation has already been able to help
the area's youth learn golf, donating
$5,000 to the Springfield Middle
School's golf program. Along with golf,
there were dozens of raffle items as
well as a dinner. Working for you,
Claire Overton, 22 News.
