A Madonna in a Field of Gold: Cimabue’s Santa Trinita Madonna

A conversation with Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris in front of Cimabue’s Virgin and Child Enthroned with Prophets (Santa Trinità Maestà), c. 1290–1300. This monumental tempera on wood altarpiece, set against a shimmering gold background, measures 384 x 223 cm and is housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

Together, they explore how Cimabue bridges Byzantine tradition and the emerging naturalism that would later define the Italian Renaissance.
