EURO 2004 highlights: Portugal edge England in penalty drama

The teams now make their way out of the tunnel. Quite the atmosphere in Lisbon, as England prepare to take on the host Portugal in this UEFA Euro 2004 quarter-final. It's long by. Maybe James, oh and it's run through to Michael Owen! Superb, instinctive finish from Owen. Less than three minutes gone. Costinha misread the flight of the ball and Owen takes his chance in some style. Figo. Maneesh with a spectacular effort and it certainly had David James worried. Goes short with it. Gary Neville. Sol Campbell. Couldn't keep it down the centre-back. England go direct again and it almost works out for them. Ricciardo with a fine stop to deny Owen again. Chimel. Again another goal with this, the winger. Costinha! 1-1. Late in the game. Portugal have got themselves level. How do Costinha get in between two England defenders? Great ball, Owen against the bar and Sol Campbell nubs it in, but it won't count. They're saying that there was a foul, the Portuguese players. Rui Costa. Gliding away from England players. Still Costa! Stunning! With ten minutes of extra time to go. Rui Costa's produced a moment of magic for the hosts. David James could not deal with the power on the shot. Nice turn by Costinha. Portugal looking to put this quarter-final to bed. Chimel. Goes for goal himself. James was across his far post. Flipped in by Beckham this time. Down by Terry. Lampard! England have scored! They may be taking this to penalties. It's 2-2. And the Chelsea duo of John Terry and Frank Lampard are combined. And that is typical for the goal-scoring midfielder. 120 minutes of football. Cannot separate these two sides. It will be a shootout. David Beckham, England captain. Steps up here. Over the bar. Beckham looks to the spot. But it's the first miss of this shootout. Rui Costa's goal in extra time. It's part of the reason we're in this situation. But not the same level of accuracy here. He too looks at the spot in dismay. Ashley Cole. Can he keep his cool at a big moment? He certainly can. Fine penalty from Cole. Postega to keep the hosts in the finals. I don't think anyone was expecting that. Certainly not David James. And Deco cannot believe it. Ricciardo has taken off his gloves for this penalty. And Durant's for sale is denied! It's worked! What a save! Ricciardo now. What a story this will be! The goalkeeper's saved and scored and won the game. Portugal are into the semifinals. What a story!
