Blue Origin's New Shepard Matched SpaceX’s Dragon ASTRONAUTS launched but Big Issue...
$28 million for 11 minutes in space... but does that make you an astronaut?
On May 31st, Blue Origin's New Shepard NS-32 mission sent six civilians—including a STEM teacher and a former ambassador—past the edge of space for a suborbital joyride.
But here’s the twist: New Shepard just matched SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in total passengers flown. Sounds impressive, right? Not so fast.
While one rockets tourists for minutes of weightlessness, the other lives in orbit, supports NASA missions, and survives the harshness of space for months.
So what’s the real difference? The tech, the training, the impact—and yep, the controversy.
Let’s break down the hype versus the hardware in today's Techmap episode.
Buckle up—because this isn’t just about space.
It’s about what it means to go there.

After a controversial all-female mission with Katy Perry on April 14, Blue Origin's New Shepard was back just a month later with a less criticized mission. Specifically, on May 31st, Blue Origin's NS-32 mission marked its 12th crewed flight. The crew with 6 passengers included: a STEM teacher, a radiologist, a former ambassador, a businessman, an entrepreneur, and an aerospace executive.
Similar to the NS-31 mission, NS-32 had a duration of 11 minutes and a ticket price of $28 million per seat. It went to suborbital space, reaching the Kármán line at 100 km for a brief weightless experience before landing in West Texas.
With this 12th crewed flight, New Shepard has now flown 64 people, which is equivalent to the number of astronauts that SpaceX's crewed Dragon has carried in its orbital missions to date.

However, the context behind those numbers is so different. While the numbers match, the purpose, mission complexity, and even the selection process for the crew are on entirely different levels.
In advance, let's talk about SpaceX's Crew Dragon. This beast launches on a Falcon 9 rocket and doesn’t just flirt with space—it lives there! Crew Dragon reaches low Earth orbit, around 400 kilometers up, traveling at a mind-blowing 17,400 miles per hour. It’s the go-to spacecraft for NASA’s missions to the ISS, carrying up to four astronauts at a time, though it can fit seven in a pinch. These missions last days, weeks, or even months, with crews doing everything from scientific experiments to spacewalks. Since its first crewed flight in 2020, Crew Dragon has been a game-changer, bringing back America’s ability to launch astronauts from US soil.
