Can you hear our code on the screen?
Want to be face-to-face with a majestic killer whale?
On the Killer Whale Tour, join our trainers for this unforgettable experience, as they share personal stories and interesting facts.
It is the perfect ambassador for the ocean, and that's the Orcinus Orca, or Killer Whale.
In just a few minutes, you'll meet SeaWorld's Killer Whales.
First up, let's find out more about these remarkable animals.
Amazing!
Step on the scales and see how much you weigh.
It's much the same with our whales.
Throughout today's experience, listen.
These synchronized behaviors strengthen their social bonds and allow them to problem-solve.
Their scientific name is Orcinus Orca.
Their common name is the Killer Whale.
And these five whales have their own personal names.
It's the youngest whale, at just 11 years old.
And Takara is the oldest, at 33 years old.
Takara is also the matriarch on this pod, which means she's the leader.
These whales trust us, and they take an active role in their own health and well-being.
Through the use of positive reinforcement training techniques, we teach the whales husbandry or healthcare behaviors.
And joining us right now at the slide-out are trainers Danny and Cassidy to help demonstrate just a few of those behaviors.
Now, one of the very first behaviors we teach the whales is called a fluke present,
in which the whales present their tail flukes to the trainers,
just as they are both demonstrated in the white underside of their tail flukes.
Our veterinarians are able to collect a blood sample from these veins at least once a month.
And as you can see, the whales are conditioned to remain calm throughout the entire procedure.
Now, throughout today's presentation, you might notice the trainers giving the whales tail massages,
back rubs, or even brushing them with soft bristle brushes.
This is because killer whales have very sensitive skin, and it's one great way to help us build our relationship with them.
Now, collecting blood is just one way to ensure the health of these animals.
Another very important diagnostic is how much each whale weighs.
And here at SeaWorld, we weigh all of the whales once a week,
by asking them to slide their entire body up and out of the water onto a killer whale-sized scale,
located in one of our back-adjacent pools.
In this position, you'll notice a portion of the whale's body,
from their dorsal fin to the tip of their tail flukes, is still in the water.
This part of their body is called the peduncle.
Ladies and gentlemen, we hope that by just today, these animals have inspired you,
and deepened your appreciation for killer whales, just as they have for all of us.
We will continue to learn from these amazing animals, and hope that you will too.
Thanks for joining us, and have a great rest of your day here at SeaWorld San Antonio.
Goodbye, everyone!
