BRAZIL vs DOMINICAN | HIGHLIGHTS | Women's VNL 2025. Super star Gabi on court as thousands cheer on in Istanbul. Brazil shut out Dominican Republic for sixth VNL 2025 win!
Brazilian super star Gabriela Guimaraes (Gabi) entered the court for the first time in women’s Volleyball Nations League action this season. She was cheered on by thousands of her fans in Istanbul, where she spent five seasons of her club career, playing for VakifBank Istanbul, as she was subbed in during the third set of Brazil’s straight-set win over the Dominican Republic on Saturday. The South American powerhouse improved to a 6-1 win-loss record and 17 points, and stands third in the current VNL standings. The Dominican Republic occupy ninth place, just below the cut-off for the Finals for now, on 3-4 and 10.
The score was 19-16 Brazil’s way, when Gabi made her grand appearance and the crowd erupted in cheers. She stayed on through the end, which came with the monster block, in which she assisted 22-year-old middle blocker Julia Kudiess to close the match at a convincing 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20).
Julia contributed a total of five kill blocks, while 21-year-old outside Ana Cristina de Souza led the way with a match-high 26 points. Her tally featured two aces, a kill block and a 52% success rate in attack. Her cross-court teammate Julia Bergmann added another 11 kills in attack.
Three players reached the double digits among the Dominican Republic’s scorers. Outside hitter Yonkaira Pena put away 13 points, including two aces and a block. Outside Brayelin Martinez and opposite Gaila Gonzalez added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Here's the serve, up and over the head, they've failed to put it down here, they're gonna go again
down the left side, superstar this, speeding it out to Martinez who makes it three to nothing.
All the block touches to start it off and Martinez, quick middle, Brazil with points on the board a
nice smooth 25 year old Geraldine Gonzalez again with that serve, Brazil run the slide attack
can't find the angle to spear it down though and finish, so it comes through the back row again
where Ana Cristina is only too happy to finish again. Yeah Candida Alias still smiling despite
that nasty looking injury in the previous match yesterday. Got to be so hard sitting there
watching but good for her, smiling, cheering, probably helping advise and guide the middle
blockers that are out there now. A bit awkward this from the Dominican Republic, that's improvisation
though. Passes are for Brazil, that's a nice serve, again deep at the libero, Brazil get one back
right on the side of the Dominican, see if they can get them to hold and bite and then they're
going to set around the block.
Super defensive work there by Laice, free ball, oh errors on both side of the net, the concentration
seemed to flicker a bit there. The jump servers have been pretty good, they need to keep those float
serves inbounds. All there are parts of that for Brazil, here's Julia Bergman,
Berro beneath it, contact from Yaniris Rodriguez, Ana Cristina on the backcourt there, comes in to
pile drive another through. Julia Bergman has seven aces in this year's VNL, not another there,
giving them the set but never mind, Brazil lock it down anyway 25-23.
Play in Istanbul with a 3-1 win over Belgium, they defeated the Canadians in
straight sets, Dominican Republic lost in straight sets to Turkey.
Smart shot, beautiful slide attack, that is absolute textbook, with the finish.
How about this set, my goodness, one hand just lays it back there.
Tainara's serve in play, Vainen gives the ball here, gives the opportunity to the Brazilians,
they read the back row attack that time from Julia Bergman, Ana Cristina across,
Nkaira, Pena, Isabel there, second touch, it was Gaila who just dropped it over, superb read there
by Dominican Republic, the ball is still in the air and still super dogging defence here for Dominican
Republic and then Brylin to the back line, Ana Cristina improvises, now they've rotated out
Geraldine Gonzalez who's someone at Calabayo can come in and serve, out to Julia Bergman,
run around play, Tainara on that slide brings it home, 17 plays, 14 now, Macris here,
just winding it up here, finding this extra gear,
firecracker of a swing there from Pena, Isabel,
Bergman sends that into backcourt, okay Dominican Republic is defended but can't
and there's the punishment, 21-17, Gaila feeds it, of course,
at the moment a Brazilian hitter, 14 for the day, here they come again,
different attack this time, back row, Julia Bergman, Dominican Republic scrambling a bit,
here comes Ana Cristina to finish, Tainara with the serve, Ribeiro forced the mistake,
overpass, Brazil hunting down another point, Ana Cristina adds another point and here we are again,
16 points, Julia Bergman with the assist, she can finish it here, Ana Cristina of course she can,
player of the match so far, locks down set number two for Brazil, job done, two sets up here,
team Brazil, I think for the Dominican there's a few things they can do better, they can clean up
a couple of miscommunications, a couple of tip balls in the middle of the court where they can
get better swings on, because those swings are going to happen, Ana Cristina is going to give
no chance, is perhaps a target now, which comes up in August for the women,
set three, Julia Bergman gets the Brazilians underway and she'll have another serve as well,
Brazil's brilliant hitter, Ana Cristina, best personal hole in this year's VNL, so passing that
22, she scored against Belgium, oh such a lovely angle on that, Dominican Republic,
way off the net there, not much Gaila could do with that, same play, same result, Diana gets it down,
11-8, Gaila Gonzalez goes deep, forces the mistake, Dominican Republic have found some heat,
immediately replaced by Larisma Martinez, Dominican Republic, Libero,
there's the up, Isabel feeds it across there, straight forward for Laís,
pushed it there from Tainara, Dominican Republic building, there's Laís in the thick of it,
Bergman forcing the problem, he's set this time to Tainara, goes huge down the line,
three balls still in the air, Brazil to finish with Bergman, kills them softly with that,
Ana Cristina, to her throne at the moment, what firepower the Brazilians have out on
court right now, there's Bergman, sends it into the backcourt, here comes the swing,
Gabi I think might have got the touch there, there's Julia Bergman,
drills it across, balls come back through the antenna, we're still there, it's Ana Cristina,
three in the block there, smother the swing, Junkaira Peña-Isabel, ball still in the air,
joust, down it comes, Marte sets for the hit, and there's the block, Julia ends the epic rally.
2016, a ripple off the tape, there's Gaila Gonzalez, did really well there from that far back,
that's superb from Gaila, Ariana Rodriguez, Gabi there, there's Bergman,
oh that's an absolute ripper, top score for Dominican Republic today, Junkaira Peña-Isabel,
still almost half the tally of Ana Cristina, who fires down another one, my goodness,
it's her 22nd, otherwise it's no points for the day, three, four, Brazil, there goes Gaila with
the serve, there's Ana Cristina, tipping again, Dominican Republic working hard today, missing
the sweep with Junkaira Peña-Isabel, and that is the win on a plane, 25-20 in the third set,
a sweep for Brazil.
