Six tips for running great drills.
Number one, they have to be objective driven, not activity driven.
A lot of people make the mistake of running an activity, like the advanced lunge game.
I love that game.
But when you're going to do it, call out what is it we're working on today when we do it.
Number two, the initial objective has to be small, concise, and clear.
What do I mean by that?
You don't want to start a drill where the kids have to think about ten different things.
You want to have a very simple objective, a very simple focus.
So you start with that small objective, but you've got a place to go.
You can build upon that drill.
Layers and levels.
Like an onion, you've got a level one, then you're adding an idea level two.
You're going up to level three, level four.
You know, by the time you get to the end, you're almost to a fencing bout.
Great drills have a discovery element to them.
So the students are doing the drill, they know what the objective is,
but you're leading them through a discovery experience
where they can start to figure things out on their own.
And that's one of the most important things for retaining concepts.
The other thing about great drills is they have to be fun.
Also, like games, there's a way for both sides to score.
So the person doing the drill is having fun, and they're learning,
and they're getting their habits improved.
And number six is talking about the importance of being a good training partner.
I will talk more about that in other videos.
But when you're training, it's really important that both sides understand
what it means to be a training partner, how to help each other improve,
and how to work together to become better fencers.
