Between Compassion and Principles

You asked me—
Why do I always search for reasons for the enemy?
Why do I so often feel pity for the guilty?
A heart filled only with compassion, without boundaries—
You said I’d forgotten that the line between right and wrong already exists.

I admit,
My heart is often soft.
I always hope to see,
Within the cracks of human nature,
A faint trace of light.

You said
My wandering thoughts
Were attempts to rewrite the rules.
I do not have that right,
Nor the courage or strength to bear the consequences.

But you also said
You admire my kindness,
You don’t condemn my mistakes.
You allow me—
To seek the pitiful side of the wicked,
As a small point of reference in your judgment.
