Lauterbrunnen: Valley of 72 Waterfalls in the Swiss Alps💦 | Fairytale Village Walking Tour
Join me on a peaceful walk through Lauterbrunnen, one of the most spectacular and iconic villages in Switzerland. Set in a deep alpine valley and surrounded by steep cliffs, snow-capped peaks and over 70 waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen feels like stepping into a fairy tale.
🗺️ Where is Lauterbrunnen and how to get there?
Lauterbrunnen is located in the Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland, between Interlaken and the alpine villages of Wengen and Mürren.
🚗 By car: From Interlaken, it's a 25-minute drive through stunning alpine scenery.
🚞 By train: Take the train from Interlaken Ost directly to Lauterbrunnen Station (20 minutes). From here, take a cable car or cogwheel train deeper into the mountains.
The valley is one of the most beautiful and accessible areas in the Swiss Alps — perfect for a day trip or a quiet mountain getaway.
🏡 Charming Chalets & Alpine Village Life
Lauterbrunnen is known for its wooden houses, quiet streets and colourful flower beds. The sound of cowbells echoes throughout the valley as village life slows down — a perfect retreat from the modern world.
💦 Waterfall Wonders: Staubbach & Trümmelbach Falls
Located above the village are Staubbach Falls, one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe (297m).
Just a short distance away, you’ll find Trümmelbach Falls — a series of powerful glacier-fed waterfalls nestled inside a mountain, accessible by lift and stairs.
In total, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is home to 72 waterfalls, each contributing to the magic and mist of this fairytale location.
🥾 Alpine Trails, Panoramic Views & Peaceful Hikes
Whether you follow the trail along the Lauterbrunnen River or hike up to Wengen or Mürren, the area is a haven for hikers and nature lovers.
Expect breathtaking views, wooden bridges, grazing cows and typical Swiss serenity with every step.
🧀 Bernese Cuisine & Mountain Flavors
Enjoy local dishes such as rösti, mountain cheeses and hearty stews in cozy village restaurants or alpine huts. The region is also famous for its fresh dairy products, fruit syrups and herbal teas made right in the valley.
The region is rich in Swiss alpine culture, with festivals, church bells and stories passed down from generation to generation.
