Vicky Pattison caught up with Florence Pugh to chat about her new film 'Thunderbolts*', the risks of performing her Marvel stunt and the one thing she'd never do for a film role.
I probably wouldn't poo for a role on camera.
That's probably just something that won't happen.
Like, I don't want to get my s*** out.
We found the lane.
There we go.
No s***, no poo.
Before we get started, I have got a bit of a brown-nose moment.
So I know you're a bit of a foodie and I've heard you like cheese.
What have you got for me?
This is my favourite cheese in the world, girl.
Oh, babe.
It's so good.
It's a strong, mature cheddar.
Three-year-old Cornish Cheddar Vintage.
Number seven on the scale.
We're going to have to open it, I reckon.
Oh, we're getting into it?
Urgh!
Oh, no.
That's what would be a marvel if you get it.
I'm just going to bite the cheese.
Do it.
This is what we're going to do.
Good, right?
The little bits of the crunchy...
Mmm.
Yes!
Go get it, guys.
Oh, well, I'm so pleased you like it, girl.
I'm going to have that for my lunch.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Treat yourself.
So should we talk about the animals?
Yeah, why not?
Okay, so I know you are no stranger to a red carpet, mate.
And by the way, the other night, you looked incredible.
Thank you.
In both the looks.
Thank you.
But I feel like, as someone who is going to openly admit to stalking your social media,
it was a very different situation a couple hours earlier, wasn't it?
It wasn't exactly plain sailing, it looked a bit chaotic.
No, it was a bit chaotic.
The day of the premiere is always absolutely bonkers, and you always plan so many things
in and you wish that you'd been more organised and got yourself a massage or got yourself
something.
It's a stressful day.
And also, I have to wrangle my family.
Yeah.
And friends.
And they are like...
It's chaotic.
God, honestly, mate, you don't have to tell me.
Like, my heart beats like I'm being hunted for sport on the red carpet.
Like, it's absolutely...
It's awful, mate.
But I do think having your lovely family and friends and, like, granny Pat, like, can we
just give up?
She's a legend.
Isn't she just, mate?
And I love how everybody else has been able to completely accept that she's a legend too.
Yeah, well, I mean, legends do.
Yeah, exactly.
It's just amazing.
She was...
Oh, it was so cute.
When I arrived on the red carpet, she was sat on a stool waiting for me to arrive.
And she was just, like, waiting.
And every single actor that came through, like, it was like she was the queen.
Like, do they need to say hello to granny Pat?
Golden caught.
Yeah, exactly.
As they should.
She's a legend.
So, your character, Angelina in Black Widow, she's a classic younger sister vibe.
Yes, she is.
Yeah, yeah.
And likes to be annoying.
Exactly.
I mean, yeah.
But in this one, she gets more of, like, a leadership role.
And that must have been a really interesting dynamic for you to explore.
What was really wonderful was I was given the opportunity of figuring out how this person
is doing and how she's dealing with quite a lot of setbacks in her life and dealing
with a huge...
It's being traumatic, isn't it?
Huge trauma of losing her sister again.
And what does that do to someone?
And how do they look when they don't have purpose?
And how does it feel when they don't want to be there anymore?
And it was a really, really...
I was just so impressed by Jake really pushing this storyline of we need to talk about mental
health.
We need to talk about mental health.
We need to talk about how it feels like to be at the bottom of, like, literally in the pits.
I think a lot of people will resonate with what she's gone through.
And you do it so beautifully.
Thank you so much.
We've got to talk about the stunt.
Yeah.
Are you mad?
Yeah.
Mad as a box of frogs.
And she loves it.
Yeah, I love it.
I just was like, if it's going to be any movie, it's going to be a Marvel movie that can achieve
this.
And I was just so...
I still can't believe that they let me do it.
I mean, think of all the forms you must have had to sign to do that.
Like, health and safety must have been gone.
That ends with that.
Well, and also you have to sign a form to say that if anything does happen, you can't
blame them.
Like, it's your fault.
But yeah, they trusted me.
And that's so cool.
And I would honestly, with that stunt team and with Heidi Moneymaker just basically being
the leader of that ship, I trusted them.
And that's totally down to them.
I mean, the amount of work that went into making sure that that was okay and that it
was safe and that I wasn't going to die, that's a lot of work.
Yeah, I can imagine.
So, is this the start of something?
Like, do you think you've got the adrenaline bug?
Are we going to see loads more stunts?
Should Tom Cruise be shooting in his boots is what I'm asking.
No, he's the legend.
He's the god.
No one's going to take over him.
I mean, what he can achieve, what he achieves in every movie is just mind boggling.
So, I'm not coming for him.
But I did just want to have a go.
And I do love stunts.
I love the practice.
I love the rehearsals.
I've always loved them.
In Black Widow, I had an amazing time.
And I just, I think I caught the bug there with Black Widow was the world of stunts and
the world of safety and basically testing your body, getting your body ready to do these
mad things.
And you have all of these incredible people teaching you how to do bonkers stuff.
At the end of Black Widow, I knew how to do butterfly knife tricks.
That's bonkers.
Just another day at the office, baby.
We have seen you do stunts, we've seen you shave, we've seen you...
A lot.
We've seen you do a lot.
She's just so busy, stop it.
Stop doing things.
No, keep doing things.
But we love that you commit to a role.
You're so invested and it's just, you're really impressive to be earnest.
Thank you.
Bloody hell.
That's quite a compliment.
Well, you are.
Call a spade a spade, mate.
Thank you.
Is there anything you wouldn't do for a role?
There aren't many things that I wouldn't do for a role.
It depends.
It all depends on what it's there for.
If it makes sense.
I'm sure there'd be a lot of personal, private things that I don't want to do.
Like, I don't want to get my **** caught.
Been there, done that, mate.
Sorry, don't do it.
You're better than that, Florence.
I probably wouldn't poo for a role.
On camera.
That's probably just something that won't happen.
We found the line.
There we go.
No ****, no poo.
Over the years, you have worked with so many amazing co-stars.
Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Andrew Garfield, to name but a few.
Would you like to see any of them join your Thunderbolts gang?
That would be insane.
Absolutely bonkers.
Could you imagine if all of them joined?
That would be madness.
I just want to see it for the outfits.
Yeah, I mean, Zendaya can pull anything off.
Exactly.
For the outfits.
Let's get her.
Right, Zendaya it is then.
I know you're a really big foodie, as am I.
Yeah, hence the cheese.
The cheese, yeah.
So I want to know, if you were hosting a dinner party for your Thunderbolts gang,
what would you serve them?
I want to know.
Starter, main course and dessert.
I think they're probably all really big, like, protein-heavy peeps
that need, like, protein.
Because they're all so big.
They're all chunks.
Look how tiny I am.
I know, babe.
Look at you.
Small things.
Five foot four.
Good packages.
Yeah, that's true.
I'm the same.
What would I cook for them?
Okay, I'd do a charcuterie board for starters,
because everybody loves a charcuterie board.
Maybe we'll do a steak for main, or we could do, like, a fish
if people don't really want to eat red meat.
Dessert, I'm going to have to do my all-time favourite, tiramisu.
Do you do a good tiramisu?
I actually do.
I bet you do.
Thank you so much.
Thanks, my darling.
You're the best.
You're the best. It was so lovely to see you.
