US President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden hosted a dinner on the South Lawn of the White House on November 22. In a speech to attendees, Biden lauded the achievements of his administration and thanked his supporters, saying that "serving as president of the United States has been the honor of my life.” Biden will conclude his White House tenure on January 20, 2025, as the oldest American president.
One thing I've always believed about public service, especially the presidency, is the
importance of asking ourselves, have we left the country in better shape than we found it?
I can say with all my heart, the answer to that question is a resounding yes, because of you.
Because of you. I believe we can be proud we're leaving America in a better place today
than we came into office four years ago. This country is living through the worst pandemic
we've seen in over 100 years. Our economy was in a tailspin. We just witnessed something we
thought we'd never ever see in America, a violent insurrection on January the 6th.
So much more has come a long way since then, but I fully believe America's better position
to lead the world today than at any point in my 50 years of public service.
I followed that standard because I had no choice. I'm Jill Biden's husband. That's the title I'm
most proud of. She's the rock of our family. She's, I think, one of the finest First Ladies
in history, in my view. William Butler Yeats wrote, think where man's glory most begins and ends,
and say my glory was I had such friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you. As I look out over
such friends, serving as President of the United States has been the honor of my life.
We're the United States of America, and there's nothing beyond our capacity when we do it
together. God bless you all, and may God protect our troops. Please enjoy the dinner. Thank you,
thank you.
