50 years after giving up their baby, high school sweethearts learn what happened to her.
If you are looking for a heartbreaking slash warming story that proves that love has no age
and no boundary, you've come to the right place. Dennis Binner was a typical American teenager.
In high school, like most teen boys, he joined the football team and was quite popular among
the girls at his school. However, for him, only one caught his eyes. Karen Layman,
on the other hand, was not as popular as Dennis was in school. And unlike him,
she was more reserved and focused less on her social life. Her sole priorities were
studying and playing the clarinet. Karen and Dennis first met in 1958. She was 13,
and he was two years her elder. The star player didn't act on his feelings because of Karen's shy
and quiet demeanor. The two of them decided to take things slowly and see where they would end
up. Many of the girls were jealous that one of Brownton High School's star football players
was interested in one of the least admired girls. Throughout their relationship, Dennis made sure
he walked Karen home from school every day, even if that meant that he would be late for
his football practice. Dennis even carried her clarinet for her. He was a true gentleman who
clearly was smitten. Two years in, when Karen was only 15, she found out that she was carrying
Dennis' baby in her womb. Dennis did what he thought to be the right thing and proposed to
her. Their parents, however, were against their marriage at such an early age. Karen was sent to
a maternity home for young, unwed mothers to take her pregnancy to term and deliver the baby,
after which the young mom was forced to do something horrific for any parent.
Back in the 50s and early 60s, a pregnant teen wasn't considered to be just an expectant mother.
Instead, she was an unwed mother, which was a great stigma she would be labeled for life.
A great number of women who found themselves in situations similar to Karen's were often
sent to special maternity homes to have their babies, where they would be forced to give them
up at birth. Karen had no choice but to comply with her parents' wishes when they were the ones
who refused the proposal and sent her to the maternity home to give birth to her child only
to abandon it right afterward. Karen delivered a healthy baby girl she named Denise after her
father. Dennis signed the birth certificate before she was taken by social services.
Karen continued to date Dennis even after the baby was born. However, when high school ended,
both tried their best to go on their separate paths. Dennis went into the army and was deployed
out to Germany, whereas Karen went straight to the University of Minnesota, where she studied
interior design. Dennis would send letters to Karen's parents' house almost every day.
Predictably, her father intercepted and hid all of them. While Karen thought that her boyfriend
forgot about her, her father was the one severing their relationship. When Dennis returned from the
army, Karen was in her senior year of college. He was 24 and she was 22. Their love for each other
was still as strong as it was at the beginning. Despite the lack of communication when Dennis was
deployed, the young couple dated again for six months before Dennis proposed again. Karen said
yes, but yet again, their dream was aborted. Once again, her father was the reason behind their
breakup. He told Karen that if they got married, he'd stop paying for her college tuition. The
couple knew they hit a wall and decided to end things, both heartbroken.
I went through hell to be with her, but I couldn't. We couldn't be together. Dennis
recalled in an interview, Karen had no other choice but to carry on with her life. She graduated
with a degree in interior design, got married, and had another child, a son, this time. Dennis also
married someone else and had three kids of his own. Fifty years passed by as they lived their
separate lives, where they hardly thought about each other until one night. In 2014, Dennis was
at a party where a woman suggested they take turns answering this question. If your doctor gave you
60 days to live, who would be the one person you'd like to meet? While most of the people named
politicians, celebrities, or inspiring figures as you can figure, the first person that came to
Dennis' mind was Karen Lehman. She was my very first love, he recalled at the party. The thought of
his high school sweetheart wouldn't leave his mind even after the party was over. A few days later,
a friend encouraged Dennis to create a LinkedIn account. He noticed the search bar, the thought
of Karen still on his mind. He decided to search for her name. Luckily for him, she was on LinkedIn
too and not too hard to find. Dennis instantly reached out to Karen and left her a message.
Karen called him back a few minutes after. Karen couldn't believe that Dennis reached out to her
after half a century. How did you find me? She asked him, to which he replied, whatever happened
to hi, hello? How are you? What have you been up to? They caught up with each other's lives.
Karen was a widowed mother of an adult son who was working in Washington State as an interior
designer. Dennis was a divorced father of three adults. They were both single with children who
had already left the nest. After a few months of reconnecting online, Dennis finally decided to fly
to Washington to see Karen for the first time in 50 years. Even though they were both nervous,
just like when they were at the start of their relationship, they immediately leaped into each
other's arms when they first saw each other. The newly connected couple stayed up all night
rekindling their past romance until the subject of marriage came up. They recalled that Dennis had
already asked her twice and Karen secretly wondered if Dennis would ask her again. When the topic of
marriage first came up, Dennis told Karen that he never wanted to marry again since he already
had his heart broken, one too many. Karen wasn't satisfied with his answer so she asked him if he
would consider asking her to marry him again. I said no, because it's like baseball, three times
and you're out, Dennis recalled to Harold Nett. But then Karen countered his analogy by reminding
him third times the charm. That night, they decided to get married again. After the old
lovers finally tied the knot, after 50 years, Karen packed up her things and moved back to
Minnesota to live with Dennis. The high school sweethearts were together at last but their smooth
and peaceful life only lasted a few weeks. All was blissful until Dennis remembered their daughter
and that he wanted to find her. Karen was not gung-ho with the idea. Though she thought about
her long-lost daughter too, she couldn't bear the thought of upending their now adult daughter's
life for their own selfish reasons. However, Dennis had another opinion of the matter.
He was relentless in trying to get Karen to agree to look for their long-abandoned daughter.
Karen would always find excuses until the day he told her I found you now and my life will be
complete if we find our daughter. The statement was so moving that Karen decided to let her husband
contact the adoption agency. Fortunately, they were able to locate her easily. Their daughter
grew up to be a woman named Jean Voxland. Jean previously contacted the adoption agency as an
adult to get information on her medical history. The 56-year-old mother of three never really took
action on trying to locate her biological family throughout her life. But one day,
she received a letter from the agency saying that a relative was looking for her. She nearly
threw the letter away thinking it was a scam, but it was her husband that convinced her to look into
it. When she finally realized that it wasn't a scam, Jean asked the adoption agency for more
information. They just sent her a letter that Dennis and Karen had written themselves, along
with some photos. Soon, Jean, Dennis, and Karen worked with the adoption agency to set up a
meeting. It would be the first time all of them were reunited after the day she was born. The
family was finally reunited in May 2016. Dennis and Karen were anxious to see the baby they hadn't
seen since the day she was born. It never crossed my mind that I'd have the opportunity to meet both
of them and they'd be married, Jean told Herald-Net. For me, having been sought out at age 54 was a bit
of a shock. Jean was speechless when she met her biological parents for the first time.
I didn't say much in the beginning. In fact, I didn't do much talking at all, she recalled to
the Post Bulletin. After the tearful and emotional reunion, Dennis did most of the talking as both
Jean and Karen were speechless and overwhelmed with all of the emotions they felt. He was the
one who told his daughter all about his and Karen's love story and why they had to give
her up at birth. After half a century, the family was finally reunited.
