lmao i had to spend weeks pointing out that lampard is not, in fact, as bad a manager as rooney, and it only took a few weeks to be proven right
It's time now for the return of Benny CFL Corners.
We take a look back at the weekend's big results up and down the Football League.
Let's start off with Burnley, who drew 0-0.
No surprise there.
That was already to Portsmouth on Saturday.
The Clarets maintained their remarkable defensive record,
making it, get this, 770 minutes.
770 minutes without conceding a league goal.
That's the longest run in their history.
I wonder what the longest run is in history.
That's insane.
The Burnley gaffer, Scottie Parker, spoke to Clarets TV after the game.
He said that despite their defensive performance,
his side didn't do enough to collect all three points, i.e. score.
It's probably a good point.
I think it's fair to say
there's a tough place to come and they're a good side.
They don't lose often here.
And some teams have been here and been on the end of things.
And I think we see that today.
Look, there's no denying we fell a little bit short today.
I think that was fair.
And that was probably down to big credit to Portsmouth for how they play.
They put us under a lot of pressure.
All very well, not conceding, right?
770 minutes is unbelievable.
Only nine goals conceded in the Premier League.
All good if you score goals.
Third they are, Burnley now, and they're not scoring enough.
So just to put that into context, right?
Top of the league, Leeds United, they've scored 60.
Third place, Burnley, they've scored 36.
So just more than half.
They've had 21 clean sheets.
Well, they say that goals win games and defences win leagues.
Is that defence going to win Burnley in the league?
Do you know what it is?
When you're not conceding goals, you go, OK, cool.
Like that's a healthy base to start from.
But at some point you have to start scoring goals because you look at Leeds
and I'm not sure if we're going to talk about Leeds.
No, I'll have a look in a minute.
I think we probably will talk about Leeds, but we're not talking about Leeds.
We can talk about Leeds, do what you want.
It's Benny's EFL corner, remember that.
7-0, Leeds can do that to you.
Yeah.
Defensively, OK, but not as solid as Burnley.
But at some point, yes, all well and good, you're not leaking goals,
but you have to start scoring goals.
You have to start putting teams away.
I mean, they scored five against Plymouth a couple of go
and the Leeds result, you go, that can happen, nil-nil.
But when you play at Portsmouth, and I know Fratt & Plotts are a plus place to go,
but you have to look at them, they're 20 and fighting for their lives.
You have to go there and get something.
You have to. And the fact you haven't.
I wouldn't say it's alarming, but...
I couldn't see any 52 goals this season.
But a gap is starting to appear.
Oh, is that the most in the league?
Well, that's second most in the league.
And you can't score against them.
No. And you're pushing for automatic promotion.
Yeah. You need to score in games like that.
It's not sure. You have to win that.
And there's a gap. Leeds are now five points ahead of them.
Same game displayed.
And Sheffield United are three points ahead of them.
They've got to start making some of these points.
Was it Marcus Edwards we were talking about in our meeting today?
Was it? It was. OK, how does he fit into Burnley's system?
Could he be the answer to their issues in attack, their problems?
Potentially. I mean, we have Zion Fleming on, don't we?
He's got six goals this season.
But the top goal scorer in all comps is Josh Brownhill.
That shouldn't be the occasion.
How many has he got?
Nine in all comps.
Yeah, it's not good enough.
But they've got good players.
I remember watching Sami Anto quite a lot for Ipswich last year.
They've got players.
Well, I think Marcus Edwards will help for sure.
They need it. They need a bit of firepower.
OK. Leeds first, Sheffield United second, Burnley third.
How will it finish? Five points between one and three.
Well, again, three points between two and three.
Well, I guess, again, I said that Burnley would win the divisions.
I've got to stick with it, but it's looking more...
If you could change it now, you'd change it at Leeds?
Do you know what? Yeah, I would. Yeah, I would, yeah.
Let's move on to Coventry. Wow.
Forley wins on the bounce.
That was a 2-0 win away at Swansea.
Their gaffer, Frankie Lampard, he spoke to Coventry City FC TV.
Blimey, that's a mouthful.
After the game, praise his size performance.
Yeah, yeah, from the first minutes, you can see the players are on it.
Very, very good off the ball.
Very solid.
Great with the line.
Compact, aggressive.
Second balls and then play dangerous, you know, through front men.
Get a goal reach again.
And second half, we could probably go and score at least another couple
blocks and good saves by their goalkeeper.
Never felt really threatened by them.
Testament to the focus of the team today.
They are, it says in front of me, five points.
I'll make it less than five points.
Hold on. Three points they are off West Brom.
Is that right? Have I got that right? It says five in front of me.
It's not, it's three. Three points over top four.
Not top four, top six. Yeah.
Now, when he took over, we were saying too much traffic.
And then, what is it, four games later?
And we're like, blimey, hold on.
And he's doing it all of it without one of his best players.
Hadji Wright, I'm a big fan of his, really like him.
Their top goal scorer of the season as well.
He's not playing, he's not played since November.
His last game was 2-2 against Sunderland and he's been out.
I think he's, is it a knee injury he's got?
But leg injury he's got, right?
And he's, he's, yeah, he's expected to come back like mid-February.
So when they get him back as well, that will help.
But a fair play to Frank Lampard.
Yeah, brilliant.
I genuinely thought they've got no, I looked at the table,
they've got no chance of getting the playoffs.
Now, as you said, they're three points.
I know there's still like, what, five, four or five teams ahead of them.
Doesn't matter though, you get a bit of form.
What is it, you play 46 games in the championship?
Yes, in the championship, yeah.
So, I've spoken to you so many times before in the past.
I think it's fascinating.
There's certain times of the season where you want to go on a big old run.
Yeah, and now's the time.
Now is the time, isn't it?
Southampton did it.
I know they still got promoted in the end.
Did it too early.
For the playoffs, but they did it too early to get automatic.
But I mean, their next game, Cromartie's is huge.
Go on, who have they got?
Leeds.
OK, where's that at?
Ellum Road?
At Cromartie.
Oh, OK.
So, that'll be a tough game.
But no, that is a big game for them.
And then they've got QPR on Shovel Wednesday, Ipswich in the cup on Saturday.
But, massive game.
Ipswich in the cup on Saturday, have they?
Yeah.
You're doing that?
Yeah.
For us?
Yeah, TalkSport, yeah.
Oh, nice, OK.
But no, yeah, great.
What he's doing there, Frank, because I didn't see this particular type of form coming.
No, I didn't.
And fair play to them.
Yeah, fair play indeed.
Let's look out now to a massive game.
It's live on TalkSport 2 tonight, 8pm, Borough, they host Sunderland.
Now, Sunderland, this is fascinating.
Sunderland are currently fourth in the Championship.
Borough, they are seventh.
Both sides obviously pushing for a place in the ploughs.
The Middlesbrough gaffer, Michael Carrick, he spoke to Borough TV ahead of the game
and admitted his side need to improve their recent form.
Well, we're certainly not satisfied quite at the moment where we are and we want to keep pushing.
But, yeah, I'd take that for that.
I think the boys within the group, they're hungry for more.
You know, they're pushing each other and they get frustrated or a little bit disappointed at times.
And that's a good sign because, you know, we expect more from each other and we know it's in us to do that.
So I'd certainly say that of eyes up really and looking ahead of us to see how we can get better.
Sometimes that's working on the pitch training.
Sometimes that's game to game.
Sometimes that's trying to win those and trying to improve the group and trying to improve the squad.
It's interesting, we're talking about when's the right time to push a win for Borough tonight.
They're seventh from 44, three points puts them on 47.
That leapfrogs Blackburn who are fifth, so they'll go into fifth place.
What a win this could be for Michael Carrick.
Yeah, they need it. I mean, they've not had back to back wins since November.
Do you know what I mean?
Have they not?
No, they've not had back to back wins since November.
Wow, that's a long time.
It's a long time in that division as well.
And that was when they went on a little mini run where they beat QPR, beat Luton and then beat Oxford.
But since then, it's been one win, draw, loss, a couple of draws, no back to back wins.
They come off the back of a bad defeat to Preston 2-1 as well.
This is huge.
This is huge for both clubs as well because they're both pushing.
Sunderland is obviously a little bit more comfortable sitting there in fourth.
Nice cushion as well.
Nine points from sixth place.
But for Minnesota, they're going to have to scrap and try and get themselves in there for sure.
Well, give me a prediction of that one.
It's live on TalkSport 2 tonight, 8pm.
It kicks off Barra against Sunderland.
2-1 Sunderland.
You're going for a home win, aren't you?
Yeah.
No, away win.
2-1 Sunderland.
Oh, 2-1 Sunderland?
Yeah.
Oh, really?
You think Barra are going to lose?
Yeah, I am, yeah.
Do you really?
Yeah, I'm going to Sunderland.
I think that's going to be a draw, that one.
But a reminder, of course, we've got that on TalkSport 2 and of course, a big game in the Premier League right here on TalkSport.
Chelsea take on West Ham.
And from 10 o'clock, the boys on the Sports Bar will be taking your calls on another busy night of football.
