We're continuing our Best Cheap Eats series.
We're showing you guys some of the best food trucks here in Hawaii.
From iconic lunch wagons to low-key spots, it is the cheap eats you don't want to miss.
What's going on Foodie Ohana and welcome back to our Cheap Eats series.
If you're new here, this is your go-to guide for discovering cheap and local eats around
Hawaii.
And today we're showing you food trucks with plates that locals swear by that won't break
the bank.
Whether you're visiting or know your way around Hawaii's food scene, you won't want to miss
them.
For our Cheap Eats series, we go off of three criterias.
One, it has to be $15 or under.
And two, it has to be substantial enough to feed one person.
And three, it has to be locally owned and operated.
So let's get into our Cheap Eats.
This Cheap Eats spot is tucked away in the Waipahu Plantation Marketplace.
You can hear them chopping away.
This is one of my favorite things to eat.
We're at Sweet Dada's for their famous pork sisig.
And guys, this is one of my favorite places to get it.
Our friend Richard is in there chopping away.
It is a cheap eats you don't want to miss.
Good.
Long time no see.
I know.
Was craving the sisig.
Long time coming.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Oh, that's good.
That's good.
I'm glad.
Thank you so much.
That's good.
Thank you so much.
I'm glad.
Thank you.
All right.
Take care.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Bye.
Here at Sweet Dada's, this is their namesake item.
And guys, it's going to set you back under $15.
This is $14 and some change.
And guys, look how massive this plate is.
I've been waiting for this.
Guys, look at this.
Honestly, I was just looking for an excuse to come back here and get their sisig.
It's that good.
If you guys haven't tried sisig, it's basically a protein that's chopped up, finished off with
some patis, special seasonings, finished off with mayo on top.
Oh, man.
This is Filipino comfort food right here.
So here it's served with two heaping scoops of rice and fried garlic on top.
You got the beautiful chopped up lechon kawali sisig all dressed up nicely.
There's diced onions, green onions, peppers, the lechon kawali itself.
It's a mix of fried pork belly skin and the pork meat itself.
Oh, man.
If you are a big fan of lechon, you will love this.
And the last time we featured Richard and his wife, he was mentioning there's some secret
seasonings that he puts in here.
So I'm not going to press him to know what those ingredients are.
I just know it's delicious.
Cheers.
Mmm.
Oh, ho, ho.
How I miss this.
Creamy, salty, crunchy, very porky, spiced, nice sharp bite of the onions in here.
Mmm.
Let's get some lechon, get some garlic rice to round it off.
Oh, wow.
Your breath is not going to like this, but your belly will thank you, trust me.
Let's add some heat.
Take a bite of that serrano pepper.
Oh, that's spicy.
Oh, man.
You got to eat this.
My turn.
The obligatory wifey bite.
Why'd you feed it to me like that?
It's hard to...
And if you want to add a little bit of citrus, squeeze some lemon.
I feel like last time it was calamansi, but...
I think it's by availability.
It needs a little bit of that lemon juice just to cut the fattiness.
Mmm.
Make no mistake, we're not taking this home.
We're finishing it here.
Mmm.
Come down here, guys.
Do yourselves a favor.
Add Sweet Dada's to your list of cheap eats food trucks.
Trust me, guys.
Don't want to miss this one.
Mmm.
Thank you.
Bye.
Guys, this thing is heavy, man.
They make sure there's no room left in this plate.
All right, Foodie Ohana, we're back here at Lani's Lunch Wagon.
And if this place looks familiar, that's because we featured them before.
Mom and daughter team, Lani and Linda.
Awesome people.
They serve up the community here in the Kapolei Industrial Area.
So a lot of regulars and for good reason.
They've been around here for decades.
And guys, they're serving up affordable, cheap eats plate lunches out of their famous lunch
wagon.
All right, Foodie Ohana, we're eating along the busy Campbell Industrial Area.
Ooh, look at this massive plate lunch.
Lani's is famous for feeding the hungry workers around the area at an affordable price.
At these prices, I don't even have to bring home lunch.
I just come visit Lani or Linda.
This is what we got today.
Two choice special mixed plate sets you back $13.
That's all.
They have many affordable options there ranging from $10 to $11 a plate.
Guys, can't go wrong.
Coming in at $13 gives you two choices.
This is their mushroom chicken roast beef special.
This thing is going to fill me up lunch and dinner.
You get your choice of mac salad or toss.
Of course, we kept it local, went with the mac salad served all over a bed of hot white
rice.
Oh my goodness.
I'm going to try the mushroom chicken.
My stomach just chose for me.
Oh yeah, I remember this.
Eating this just brings back so much memories of the last time we came here.
Their mushroom chicken here is special.
It's not like your typical white cream of mushroom kind of mushroom chicken.
This is more similar to the flavors along the lines of a guisantes, but they use a lot
of mushrooms.
Mixed vegetables in here.
I see some bell peppers and of course the chicken meat.
All sauteed nicely in this sumptuous sauce.
Another local favorite, roast beef flooded in this homemade gravy.
Oh man, they give you a lot here guys.
My arm is getting tired from holding this plate.
This is a lunch wagon so there's not going to be a dining spot guys.
This is takeout.
Take this home and enjoy it.
The gravy is flowing.
It's got a nice beefy flavor and that beef gravy, oh my goodness.
Salty, beefy gravy.
So tender guys.
It's pork tender.
I can just break it off like that.
It's all that tender action.
Oh yeah.
Give me some rice man.
Get some of that gravy on the rice.
Mmm.
Of course gotta have the mac.
Oh yeah.
This is what you call a local plate lunch right here at an affordable price.
Something that hardly exists ever nowadays so if you have a big appetite, come hungry.
If you're in the area, check out Lani's Lunch Wagon.
Do yourselves a favor.
Our next stop for some good cheap eats food truck is here in the inconspicuous Mapunapuna
area known for some hidden gems.
Alright, thank you so much.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
We're here at the Lechon King.
One of our favorite cheap eats from a food truck.
And guys, this hidden gem is not only affordable, but delicious.
Only available on the weekdays, it's one of our favorite places to get lechon.
Just gotta look for that blue truck and hope it is open.
Oh, I cannot wait to get into this.
Look at this freshly chopped up lechon roast pork belly.
Filipino style.
This used to be only $10.
It is now $12 but still qualifies as cheap eats.
Look at all the juiciness of the pork fat.
Earth shattering crispy glass pork skin.
I want to see the meat.
Look how fatty and buttery this thing looks.
If your mouth isn't watering right now, I don't know what will make it water.
I'm salivating just picking this up for you folks.
You cannot skimp out on anything when it comes to lechon.
Very simple.
The lechon plate comes with a glorious hefty portion of crispy lechon and two scoops of
white rice.
Also, it's takeout only guys.
Nowhere to sit.
So we're just enjoying it on the side of the road here.
Why not?
I can't wait to get home.
Going in.
Oh my god!
It's so good.
Mmm!
Perfect amount of saltiness, crunchiness, pork flavor.
Mmm!
Oh man.
The seasonings they put on here, it's so herbaceous too.
It rounds it off so nicely.
It is so fragrant but just enough to not overshadow that porky goodness.
When you have the title of king in your establishment's name, you better be able to back it up and
this place backs it up 100%.
One of our favorite places to get lechon here on the island.
And it's a cheap eat.
Come on guys, what could be better?
They don't only have lechon, they also have other Filipino favorites and other local favorites.
Amanda will share with you another favorite here at Lechon King.
Another fan favorite here at Lechon King is the furikake salmon.
Ooh!
You guys, this thing, it sells out all the time.
Last time we wanted to try it, they actually sold out.
So this was also $12.
Such a steal.
Huge piece of filet of salmon, two scoops of rice.
Ooh!
Oh my gosh, it is so tender.
Pork tender.
Look at that.
Ooh!
You can see a ton of furikake topping, nice salmon, a little layer of mayo I think to
bind it all.
And there's some kind of like brown sauce.
I'm guessing it's some kind of shoyu type of sauce.
Cheers!
Mmm!
Wow, that's super flavorful.
Mmm!
Wow.
I love the furikake and the nice little subtle hint of that shoyu gives it a nice umami kick.
If you're looking for something a little lighter than the lechon, something less heavy, definitely
the salmon is a great option.
The salmon is lean but also has some fattiness to it.
There's the skin on there as well.
You can't go wrong with any plate at Lechon King, trust me.
You guys are not going to want to miss this.
Do yourselves a favor guys, look for the blue truck in Mapunapuna.
You will not regret it.
And this next spot on our list of affordable cheap eats food trucks is called Nikki's Lunch Wagon.
Yup, look for me.
I love it.
Give her a bite though.
Just one yeah, just a sniff.
They're located in between the state capitol and downtown areas.
They serve up a lot of the employees here as well as the tourists visiting Iolani Palace
right across the street.
Look for the yellow lunch wagon called Nikki's Lunch Wagon.
They have a lot of options to choose from, mostly under $15.
This combo fried chicken and their house name chili is $12.
It comes with two fried chicken thighs fried to golden perfection, their in-house made
chili, potato mac salad, and of course on a bed of white rice.
You saw on the b-roll how long the line gets here so come early and get your food right away.
I'm going to try some of the chili first.
It's nice and piping hot guys.
Very savory, nice rich tomato-y flavor, I see bits of ground, oh man monkey pod.
Oh we're under a monkey pod tree you guys.
Oh no?
The OG peeps will know what we're talking about with a monkey pod tree.
Oh goodness.
You guys heard that right, these cars are taking a beating.
I don't want to be one of them.
I see chunks of ground beef in here, some beans.
Flavor is very nice and acidic, very tomato-y flavor.
It's going to go really perfect over the white rice.
I do want to get into the fried chicken because I feel like this is the star of the show here.
I love the pieces where the skin is curled up from the frying process because I know
it's going to be a phenomenal crunch.
There's no prettier way to eat this.
Pick it up with your hands and dive in.
Okay, very simply seasoned, probably just salt and pepper but it's fried to perfection.
It's not too greasy, the chicken is still moist.
This kind of reminds me of the fried chicken at Paalakai Market.
If you guys have been there, this chicken is right up there with it.
Now the perfect bite.
You take some of the chicken and you dip it into the chili.
This is why you get the chili chicken mixed with.
Very popular in the local community.
Oh man, that's how you do it.
So good.
The reason it works so well with the chili is because the chili has a tomatoey aspect
so it's almost like ketchup but even more delicious.
So guys, look for the long lines or look for that yellow lunch wagon.
I don't know if you guys see a theme here but look for colored lunch wagons.
They probably have awesome food.
So guys, on to the next spot.
Our next stop for Cheap Eats food trucks is a place called Rico Rico's.
And guys, they do one thing and one thing only and they do it well.
We're right off of King Street in the Moiliili area.
Near Old Stadium Park.
Check out this beautiful chick and it's not Amanda.
This is Rico Rico's chicken.
I've been craving this bird.
The way they prepare it is very much similar to the local huli huli chicken
but a little bit different.
This is Peruvian chicken.
For $12 you get half a beautiful Peruvian chicken
fire roasted with all the herbs and spices
used in Peruvian cooking.
It's been a minute since we tried this
and if you guys haven't, do yourselves a favor.
I'm excited.
You literally get half a bird.
If you get the full bird, it's a little bit more.
For $12, this is going to feed two people.
Simply served on a bed of corn rice.
I believe that's a Peruvian thing.
It looks like white rice mixed with corn.
Alright, I'm getting into the bird guys.
Now how do I attack this?
There's no other way to attack it.
You just gotta use your hands.
This thing is massive and so juicy.
Oh man, I wish I had a table to eat this on.
Caveman style.
Taking a bite now.
Mmm.
Oh man.
Oh my god.
So juicy, so flavorful.
I love how he reintroduces the chicken drippings
back onto the plate itself.
The seasonings are oregano.
I taste smoked paprika.
There's some turmeric.
Oh man, it's so fragrant.
This is such a simple plate but it's so delicious.
Let's try it with some of their sauce.
So when I asked the gentleman helping,
he didn't want to expose the secret to the sauce.
He just said it's a little spicy.
Looks like a mustard type of sauce.
Oh wow, it's very vibrant.
Oh, it tastes like mustard mayo.
Very interesting.
Wow, I wouldn't have guessed considering the color
but it tastes like what you would put on a burger.
For a $12 plate lunch, this thing has a lot of places beat.
Mmm.

Wait, this is not the capitol though.
This is like
right in front of Iolani Palace.
Iolani Palace, this is the post office
and that's the famous Kamehameha statue.
I think it's still considered near the state capitol.
You're going to want to add it to your Cheap Eats playlist.
Ah, there's a bug on me.
I was holding it in.
It took so long.
Here.
There was like a bug crawling on my skin.
