Bringing a life into this world, traditionally, for our people, was seen as something sacred.
They're ceremonies, and they all relate to discipline.
The act of parenting, and the act of discipline, that was seen as something sacred as well.
Traditionally, children are at the center of the circle, so there was a whole system that surrounded them and was part of their discipline.
And so they're prepared at a really young age. It's not, wait until they're 13.
It's like, you've got to start thinking about taking care of yourself.
Our traditional values as First Nations people were always respect, honesty, kindness, and sharing.
And that's the approach we took when it came to parenting.
It takes a community to raise a child.
The child already has a mindset that the responsibility is all around them.
And it's not just within the boundary of their tipi or their home.
When we bring a life into this world, it's not our life to keep.
We're only loaned our children. It's our belief from the Creator.
Our whole way of life at one time was one art form.
