Conventional win for the Diamondbacks in the opener on Friday. A cardiac win with
the walk-off last night. The Diamondbacks, they're winning in a variety of
different ways and today they are gonna try and keep it as classy as possible.
A good starting pitching up for Merrill Kelly who so far has not allowed a run
here in the month of June. He's been incredible. He is rock steady as possible
and if you're a D-back fan, these ninth innings are getting crazy one way or the
other. Fortunately the last couple have been on the D-back side as they got that
big comeback win but Merrill has a chance to get a sweep. It would be just
the seventh time in D-back history that they've been able to sweep a week-long
homestand. We are ready to go. Game three. Stepping up to the plate for San Diego
is Fernando Tatis Jr. Playing and a miss. There's old faithful of Merrill Kelly
changeup. And when he's got that pitch work and he is a handful. And now two
down. A strikeout of Tatis to ground out of the rise. And now here comes Machado
DH-ing this afternoon. Got him! What a start for Merrill Kelly. A one, two, three
first. He struck out Tatis. He punched out Machado. Diamondbacks coming up. No
score bottom of the first inning. Corbin Carroll will lead off for the
Diamondbacks against the veteran right-hander Nick Pavetta. Has not made a
start against these guys since he was a Philadelphia Philly. And he goes around
and strikes out. Gets him on the fastball at 94. Good start for Pavetta one way. Now
the switch hitting can tell Marte batting left-handed. Ground ball and a third. Nice
pick by Iglesias. Gets up plenty of time to throw him out. Great play by Jose
Iglesias. Two down. Perdomo's had a great series. Three run triple to tie the game
in the bottom of the ninth last night. And four for eight in the first two games.
Swing and a miss as Perdomo strikes out. Second strikeout of the inning. A one, two,
three first for Pavetta. Gavin Sheets will lead off here against Merrill Kelly. See
if he can't do something about this scoreless tie. Lined into right field. A
base hit. That was on the curveball. And Gavin Sheets picks up where he left off
yesterday. Base hit. First hit of the day for San Diego. Starts the second inning. And
after the base hit by Sheets a couple of quick outs by Kelly as that brings up
the veteran Jose Iglesias. Up the middle. Perdomo has it. Marte steps on the bag.
They strand the lead on a single. Merrill Kelly two scoreless against the
Padres. So for the second consecutive inning the Padres with a lead off single. Sheets
never made it beyond first base in the second. We'll see how it goes here in the
third with the number nine hitter Elias Diaz coming up. He fires and Diaz swings and
misses. I mean that was just masterful pitching right there by Kelly and he's got
strikeout number three. And now a man at first one down with Tatis coming up. And
Fernando hits a liner into center field for a base hit. Lutgrich had to wait so he's
now just getting to second. Wasn't sure that was going to get through. It does. And
Fernando continuing to heat it up offensively. They're now two on for Luis
Arraiz. Punches that out to left for Lutgrich. Arraiz 0 for 2. And here comes Machado.
A little squip shot to Cattell. Merrill Kelly able to strand two. Three scoreless
for Merrill. 18 consecutive shutout innings for Merrill Levainston. Eight up
eight down for the Padres right hander. And that'll bring up Jose Herrera. This is
grounded down the first baseline. Going to hit the back. Pivet is there. Touches the
bag. Nice play. Arraiz was waiting for it behind first base. That would not have gone
well. But Pivet a Johnny on the spot. The third consecutive inning now that the
Padres have had the leadoff man reach safely against Merrill Kelly. Bogarts lined out
to third his first time. 2-0 delivery. And a base hit inside the bag at third down to
the left field corner. Gavin Shins is going to run a while. He's headed to third and beyond.
Tim Leaper is sending him around. Here comes the throw. They'll be none. Padres take a
1-0 lead. Xander Bogarts on an RBI double. But San Diego on top 1-0. With the way Kelly's
been throwing the baseball, you're not going to see too many mistakes. This is a big time
mistake. That's a two seamer that actually leaks right down the heart of the plate. Pull
side. Says Xander Bogarts. Gavin Sheets has got the play right in front of him. He picks up Tim
Leaper. He's giving him the windmill. Gavin will scamper home. Give that man $200 for pass and go.
And the Padres are on the board. That ends the stretch of 18 consecutive scoreless innings for
Merrill Kelly. Cronenworth getting his second look at Merrill Kelly. In this spot hitting a
250. Driving an 11. With runners in scoring position. High fly ball to deep right field.
Corbin Carroll going back. It's headed to the ground zone. 10th pitch of the A.B. is out of the
yard. Jake Cronenworth with a two run shot. Puts the Padres on top 3-0. Oh, there's a
crowd zone at A.Z. Oh, believe it. Jake was down 0-2. He worked it to 2-2. And Woogie tries to
locate the changeup. Speeds up his bat. He went down and got it. Jake knew it. His teammates
knew it. Crooked number here in the fourth. Oh, there's something about that changeup.
They run around for the Padres. For the fourth straight inning. And four out of five total.
As Arise steps in. 0-2 today. There he goes. Right away. And a liner to right field. That's
going to get in. And get by Carroll back to the track and the wall. So Fernando just keeps on
going. He'll head plateward with the fourth Padres run. It's 4-0 San Diego. Luis Arise
drives him in. Arise just gets on top of the heater. May have been a hit and run there. This
is a fastball elevated. Would have been a perfect pitch to throw on. Instead it turns into a double
and an RBI for Luis Arise. Frederick's second. Nobody out for Machado. Right at the knees. And
Manny knew it. Got caught looking at that changeup. And he just surrendered with the balls
about halfway to home. Arise looking to third on the play. And now with two down here is
Bogarts who had an RBI double his last time up. There's the put away changeup. Merrill
Strands Arise. Padres pick up a run. They lead it 4-0. Nevada has been flawless through four.
Arizona has not had anybody reach base. Josh Naylor. A. Eugenio Suarez. Lourdes Coriel Jr.
4-5 and 6 coming up. Good take. That curveball misses up. But that's the first Diamondback
baserunner. Naylor walks to lead off the fifth. So the D-backs get their first baserunner of
the game via a leadoff walk. Now Suarez. Pitting for one more right here. Suarez. Way back.
Way back. And it's gone. He has homer now in five of his last eight games. That's number
21. 437 feet. And they cut the lead at half. Talk about not getting cheated. Suarez. I
don't think he ever hits a cheap home run. That one. 437 feet to dead center. Some daddy
power on Father's Day. Almost 109 off the bat. Padres will come to bat with a 4-2 lead
here in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Taylor Scott back to work for the Sinks. And
Elias Diaz. Fernando Tatis. And Luis Arise coming up. Fair ball inside the bag at first
down the right field line. Heading for second is Diaz. Into the corner goes Corbin Carroll
to dig it out. Out before Diaz at second base with a double. Here is Fernando Tatis Jr.
He's two for three with two singles and a run score. There's a liner towards the gap
at left center field. That'll get in for a hit. They're going to wave Diaz. The throw
is headed to second base and run scores. Fernando's safe at second. And the Padres take a 5-2 lead.
Another knock for Fernando Tatis Jr. His third of this ball game. A hustle double picks up
the RBI. Padres get another run. They continue to attack on. One pitch out there for Arise
and that brings Machado very quickly to the plate. Tatis takes off for third. The pitch
is a ball. The throw to third. Not in time. Stole a base for Fernando. So not just the
three hits and a run bat in. You can add a theft to that as well as he steals third.
On the ground towards shortstop. Infield was in. They're not coming home though. They go
to first for the short out. And Fernando gets in with the Padres' sixth run at 6-2
San Diego. A base hit into right center field. The second hit of the day for the Diamondbacks.
And they've got a man on now for Suarez once again. Elevates and Suarez strikes out. Ninth
strikeout for Nick Pavetta. Two down. That will bring up Lourdes Scuriel Jr. Fly ball
center field. Struck well. Lockridge back at the wall. Makes the catch up against it.
Good leaping grab. One of the deepest parts of the yard. Back by the 413 marker. But Brandon
Lockridge with a good speed to get back there. Times the leap. Comes down with it. Top number
three. Nicely done. That's Brandon Lockridge. Pavetta loves it. Oh yeah. Last chance to
add to this four run lead. Elias Diaz. Fernando Tatis Jr. Luis Arise coming up. And first
pitch swinging. Diaz hits one in the air. Deep to left field. Scuriel's back to watch.
It's going to go. Elias Diaz with his fourth of the year. And the pods add on on the first
pitch of the ninth inning at 7-2. Keep the hits coming. Padres get another run. Their
twelfth hit of the day. Seventh run. This time a solo shot. It's been all slug for Diaz
in this ball game as the Padres lead 7-2. Now a base hit into center field. And a four
hit day today for Fernando. He is thinking two. Headed to second. He is safe with a double.
Second time that he's aggressively come out of the box in what appeared to be a single
off the bat. And he's turned it into two doubles today. Luis Arise. Oh whoa. Whoa. That was
a fair ball. And he is out I believe. He swung at that. Yes. So he is retired. One to three.
Taking third is Fernando. And here's Manny. To left and a base hit for Manny. From third
comes Fernando. And the Padres will take an 8-2 lead. Here's the first hit of the day for
Manny Machado. Second RBI. Sean Reynolds into the game now for San Diego. First and foremost
strikes. No free passes. And let's see if Sean Reynolds can have a quick one right here and
shake hands with his catcher. Fly ball center field. Lockridge will have room. And the Padres
win. They were able to grab the last game of the three game series in the desert. Nice
victory today. 8-2. That's a very good pitching today from Nick Pavetta. Big offensive day
for Fernando Tatis.
