Can't see the green.
Back into that sun.
Boy, what a start this is, yeah?
Look out for the whole chance.
Oh, come on.
Incredible, I mean these guys find away.
Kurt unbelievable find away there that good.
You know the adrenaline was high anyway.
When that would end, that was
even a spike on top of it.
We have some breathing to JJ spawn his third.
How about this touch?
This is what we're dealing with the 10.
What a shot from JJ.
I'll tell you what.
That is fantastic.
That is the place you don't
want to be over there.
Back up the hill.
So bad approach to the 10th.
Oh, you can see these greens.
If you can hit the shots
they're holding right now.
Just what you're looking for
right there for a player like Ludwig.
Who's obviously gotta be one of the
guys on everybody's list this week.
Now that was nicely.
Nicely done there, let's see the result.
It is really good wow.
Look at those three shots.
Yeah, they wouldn't set up wouldn't reach.
Yeah, yeah, pretty punt Adam Scott.
Yeah, nice bounce back.
That bogey at 10.
Ludwig Oberg, second at 11.
Second shot plays well uphill here,
but a gettable hole location
serve in the back left.
Oh man, what a start for this guy.
Two great approach shots at 10 and 11.
Peppers the flag stick there.
Pretty putt now look big.
What a start for him.
Green start birdie at the first
two holes of the US Open.
Pretty trying at the 1st.
See if he can get it going this week.
Obviously a past champion.
That's a heck of a start.
He has not played well this
season on the PGA Tour,
so maybe the US Open gets him going again.
Now McElroy.
He knew he was going to get a good read.
He got a good look from Rosie and when
you give these guys that kind of a read,
the expectations are really high to make a putt.
The lies good. Lie was good.
Stay there, there's a lot of slope
just short of where his ball is,
so he avoided that.
He'll have a nice uphill look at Birdie.
Second shot, see Wu Kim.
What ideal drive down the
left side in the fairway?
28 going up the hill here
should be attack mode.
There aren't many flagsticks.
He won't go out anyway,
so he is always in attack mode.
US Open champion from 2019 Gary
Woodman for Birdie at the 2nd.
10 US Open champ from a couple
of years ago, Wyndham Clark.
Up that Hill. Almost a full club.
Now does it stop?
Yeah, it does coming out of that first cut.
He obviously had a very good lie there
to be able to spin it like that.
Birdie putt now third Wyndham Clark.
That's just a really well played hole.
Hit driver off the tee.
Good wedge in their whole high.
Not easy to do getting that whole high there.
Just 227 left.
Again, all downhill from here.
He's got an aggressive line at
this front left hole location.
Oh my goodness, what a shot.
I well, I think that the questions
about the driver have been answered.
His longest drive of the season.
I did get a bit of help off that downslope,
but I did not think that that
bunker 380 off the T was in play
for anybody this week and obviously.
I was incorrect.
This one hasn't finished yet.
It's going to be an Eagle putt.
Eventually we just don't know
how long it's going to be.
That's just a great indication
of the slopes on the 12th green.
I believe so.
This is to tie the lead early on.
Yes, so McElroy gets to two under par.
He's finished four straight US opens under par.
No other player has done that in
the history of the championship.
Tristan Lawrence pretty putt at the 1st.
Dead center, yeah, no kidding.
What a good stroke that was.
Good way to start your day.
And at 16, JJ spawn reaches the
last of the quote short holes.
222 today likes to see that ball
fall a little left to right.
This one might have been
just a little too much.
Oh right of center that much.
My goodness, that shot tracer
is a little misleading,
but he's going to have a perfect
putt straight up the hill for
the outright lead JJ spawn.
Puts it two on the card here at 16 and JJ
spawn jumps to three under par first.
There in the championship, see will Kim.
We put here at the part three nicely done.
That's a two to get to two under.
Keegan Bradley Ryder Cup
captain tough start at the 6th.
This is second shot out of the bunker.
I don't get the day going in the
opposite direction from the start.
Has been a little bit up and
down for Keegan thus far,
but sometimes it takes a shot like
that just to refocus and get you
moving in the right direction.
From 135 doesn't like it a whole lot.
Tough hole location upon a
little shelf on the right.
You cannot miss right?
Oh, what a great car.
He's going to like it now.
He's going to love it now.
What a look at Birdie DeChambeau
to get to even par.
Yeah, Bryson is back to where he started.
The defending champion now just
three back JJ spawned USGA has now
started their own national junior
program for both boys and girls.
Great, great, great point Gary.
So important Gary Woodland,
US Open champion rolling in a
birdie to get to two under par.
The winner six years ago at Pebble Beach.
Kill some 46 feet.
Bunkers everywhere.
Players can just see the top of
the flag stick from the T.
And look at this.
Let hold on.
My dependent if it's decent,
he can just flip the ball on the
green, let it release to the whole.
It's not too bad.
It's an uphill putt from there.
Nice place to put from up the hill
with a little movement to the right.
Yeah, beautifully done.
Extends the lead to two and four
under par at Oakmont before making
the turn on Thursday 5 Gary Woodland
has a really good look at Birdie.
Yeah, beautiful second shot in here.
Just under 4 feet.
Well done.
Look out for the 2019
champion from Pebble Beach.
One of the four in the field who
played in the 07 US Open here.
Mickelson second shot.
See if you can take advantage
of that accurate drive.
Beautiful. Had a good week on the
live tour last week.
One over par filled uphill.
Ones are going to be much slower.
It's dropped back to 14.
Saw the wonderful second for Mickelson.
Look toward the left just a little.
Starting out on a much better
line than Ludvig's, but still
looks like it's leaking a little right.
It's going to find that bunker too.
So just, oh wow, finds the surface.
Yes, carried it all the way up there.
What a shot.
That's the shot of the day so far.
Fun to watch and it's going to be
just a great week over at one
of those great holes. 17 Adam
Scott and a two putt birdie attempt.
OK.
So Adam Scott is under par.
And at the first hole it's Jordan
Smith with this putt for birdie.
Look how far out to the right he's starting.
It's gotta try and kill it just above the hole.
It will take a left turn.
Like there, oh my goodness, what a read.
Matching that read in the speed.
Won't see that much from that location today.
So looking right down at the whole location.
Right portion of the green.
See if he can control the distance.
New irons in the bag this week.
I guess.
Saw the beautiful approach for Bryson.
And he pays it off, he does.
Cutting the ball beautifully.
And a great iron shot in there
as well to control the distance.
That was his issue at the Masters
on that final Sunday.
Remember the and an interesting set
as with everything with Bryson.
There's a little intrigue to everything.
Oberg beauty up to T182.
Second shot at his ninth hole of the day.
Really piecing together a nice opening
round at the US Open and it continues.
Could not be in a better place
underneath the hole.
They're going to Clemente.
Andrew McCutcheon passed him for third
on the all time Pirates home run list
yesterday in a Buccos win.
Adam Scott, the tee shot here.
Second shot should say at the 9th is a
beauty after a wonderful tee shot finding
the fairway so Adam will have a chance
to get it to two under par mental
Willis beauty to see if they cash in.
Oberg for Birdie.
Ludwig Oberg birdied the first two,
then dropped a shot all pars in between.
And there you see a third
birdie in his first nine.
Alright, Oberg did Adam Scott trying to follow.
It's a much straighter look.
Beautifully done.
Couple birds in that group might
not see that for the rest of the day.
Wow.
JJ's got about 11 feet.
You can just see how far out to the right.
He's got to start this.
Oh yeah, that is huge right there.
And we talk about it all the time,
putts that keep rounds going,
and that was exactly that.
Thomas Dietrich has this to get 200 par.
That beautifully done there.
Having a nice season on the PGA Tour.
You know, maybe not feeling it down
low on the bottom side of this hill.
Ludwig is coming in much lower
than the previous two,
and it also looks like it's
going to fly back there.
Oh, how about perfect?
Yeah, he was in a much better spot,
had a better angle.
He was hitting it more into the hill,
the side of the hill.
Ludwig Oberg was at two under
par and he's got a chance to get back there.
Brilliant second shot up the
hill here at the long par 4.
Nice place to putt from little uphill.
150 yards up the hill, so a huge tee shot.
Oh haha, there we go.
Well played 9th thus far for Dietrich.
Let's go check in on the knife.
Will it be the first birdie at the 9th Gary?
It's the best approach shot here.
The first one inside of 20 feet,
so far at this par 4 9th so.
Thomas Dietrich.
But just has to trust the number.
As we saw some 23 feet up the hill,
so good seven or eight yards
added to the yardage.
And there we go, hold on a tailgate.
He doesn't know what he has to rely
on the reaction from the crowd.
Well, that's the way to turn
your day around in a big hurry.
That's a look of I hate this game.
And then all of a sudden the jubilation.
It was always on a good line.
It was just a matter of whether
it was the right distance,
and it was absolutely perfect.
Might be the most subdued reaction
to a hole out.
That you'll ever see from a guy like Shane.
Wow, he's a great.
Coming in a little bit higher than I expected,
and this is definitely gonna fly back there.
It needs to watch out. Oh gosh.
OK, it's pretty good now,
but I'm not sure he was.
Totally happy with it in the air.
Just enough zip to keep that safe.
See where he's got it aimed.
I don't think it's gonna have much
pace if it does go in Mark.
He's gonna wait out to the left
and you know what it's in.
Well, I've just felt that one.
I felt like maybe.
Could get that one in he did,
and that could change his entire morning.
65 feet up the hill.
Might have made it.
Oh, he sure did.
There's a way to make the birdie.
Say well played.
Rewarded Noah Kent putting for his par.
Lengthy putt man who was the.
Runner up in the US amateur.
And that is really well judged.
You gotta be kidding me.
Noah Kent's headed to the University
of Florida to play his collegiate golf
and out of position on that third.
So now his 4th and he leaves it in there.
And there is the story of the rough at Oakmont.
You just don't know.
I mean it.
Two inches can make a huge difference
and that is three wedges from
around the green and not on.
Wow, and this is where the mind can
start to do some incredible things.
And as defensive a putt as you
can hit on this golf course,
you just cannot give it too much.
And honestly, like that could be the
difference maker at the end of the week.
That particular save right there.
Look how pumped up he is.
He still problems and a great bogey save.
Yeah, John Wood said it appropriately
as defensive as a putt as you'll see all day.
And if that would have missed it would have.
No wedge out. So he's he's feeling like
at this point he could make a 6 like
we just saw the Shambo do at 12.
That would be a win.
Try and measure the run out.
A bogey from this distance is possible.
Trying to save 6 big save by McElroy
and that's another one Mike DeChambeau
and now McElroy the difference makers.
Top 15 or 16 feet here.
It's going to go hard, right?
Oh, come on, yeah, JJ Spahn stays bogey free.
Seen a couple of really good
saves the last hour from Spa.
Hold a long one at 12.
Among the amateurs,
Evan Beck, 34 year old from Virginia Beach,
who is the winner of the mid and.
Moment here in the open.
Oh, that's a keeper right there.
To the challenge, we're going to see
a lot of that when these guys walk
off for the next half hour.
See who on 6 trying to peel it back.
Did he get enough of it?
Just wow, that is a nice break right there.
He did not love it when it came off the
club face, but he's going to love it now.
See who Kim trying to get back to
the bogey at the 5th with the birdie at 6th.
This is number two.
It is the 11th hole for Jackson Buchanan.
23 year old and managed the
first hop and the spin.
Nice kind of like that beautifully done
ported South Bend interest in Lawrence,
who had it to 200 at one point.
Try to get back there again.
28 year old South African does just.
Where you want to put from?
Up the hill can be aggressive.
It's exactly where I was from, whoa.
It's all about.
Can you control the first hop in the spin?
And he can do it, and that's why you lay up.
Beautiful play that was while we were away.
Friend zone.
That will certainly help the cause for Xander.
See who Kim for Birdie at 7 steeply
up the slope right through there.
Wow, really a bonus birdie for Seawolf.
At the same time, you want to try
to get it up onto that top level,
and that's one of the hard things
about this 18th hole is this green
stuff to do from an upslope in the
field hit all the way to the back flag.
It's just right of it.
That mental spirit that he worked on.
A lot of it came from his dad,
Stefan again, slow moving to his left at the end.
For Xander.
Alright, so the afternoon players
starting their round.
Eric Van Royen took it way down.
There is 2nd at the 10th.
Yeah, you can go right after this
whole location screen still holding.
Very nice. One way to stop this.
Hit the flagstick.
Like that, if that ball hadn't hit the flagstick,
I guarantee it's at least 12
to 15 feet past the whole.
He's up on the 3rd Sam Burns.
Didn't win that playoff in Canada,
getting his open started.
Tell by the reaction he's hoping for a bounce.
He might he might just be OK here.
Yeah, I just get it here.
We saw one go in from this
angle early in the day.
And from a shot he didn't love.
They just start off with a red number.
Love it when he gets up there.
More few reactions this week
for Birdie at the 10th.
Few choice comments.
A few choice reactions.
Promise you Oakmont will bring it out,
but let's see one here.
Those are going to give you good golf as well.
Hartford JT posted and this is his third.
I won't see very many.
Players take a lofted club from that angle.
Unless they're feeling good about it, right?
My goodness.
Hitting it very high in the draw here.
He's going straight to the tee.
He likes it nearly fell down on that.
It's amazing how he's able to keep the face square.
Just testament to his hand,
high coordination and talent.
It's so true, we take a second look here.
Beautiful load, nice shoulder rotation,
and then just everything unloads and explodes.
And looks like a long drive contest and just giving.
The account is open for world number one.
Scotty Scheffler.
Here's Bud Pauly.
It's been good to watch him play some good golf this year.
Second shot at number one.
How aggressive he gets there.
One of the best ones of the day there.
Two over as he's been trying to steer it home.
It's tough to tell if that was sitting in the first cut
just on the edge of the primary
or he's just trying to hack it out.
Looks like he got a lot of club on that.
That could end up just fine.
It should work back off that edge there.
He's gonna have a great look for three.
Couple of paces.
With one of those rare close looks for Birdie at the 18th.
That's how you play 17th.
That's it, perfect little fade there
right on the front edge of the green.
And at the second Bud Pauly from 80 yards.
One of my favorite golf swings in the game, this one.
Good to see his return to form.
You just like the simple action?
I like the fact that he's a little guy down.
I like watching the little guys.
Well, the little guy has a very good look at Birdie.
150 left at this 470 yard par four.
And that's what Bud Pauly can do
when he gets on a roll.
It's gonna be a tap in Birdie for him.
And Pauly.
And a Birdie here at the third.
Now Koepka.
Just perfectly positioned.
This is a high towering shot.
This could potentially be really good.
Oh, it is, Billy Ray.
My goodness, what a shot.
Watch this.
Yeah, that's gonna keep feeding,
but it's gonna have a great look at Eagle.
Bruce Koepka for Eagle.
There you go.
The two-time Open champion.
As he's trying to finish off
a potential up and down here to post three under.
What a muting.
That's brilliant there from the South African.
At the fourth, Patrick Reed.
At his second from 286 yards away.
On the hole!
He doesn't even know that he dunked it.
Now, yeah.
U.S. Open history,
since they really started keeping records.
I mean, there was nothing fluky about this ball.
Absolutely not.
Right down the flag.
It's over the brow of a hill.
That's why he couldn't see it.
He could maybe see the top of the flag.
Oh, the cheer.
The cheer is what's gonna tell you, Patrick.
Absolutely.
In the hole, here too.
Is it?
Yeah.
Out of one of the low spots here, up the hill.
Should break left at the end.
And the miss on the last hole, Perry.
It's a great start.
Look at this.
Three of the first five.
Oh, beautiful.
Exactly the way he was looking.
Sung Jae-in trying to get it to two under.
Gonna play this up pretty high.
Watch this break here at the end.
Just hung in there.
Yeah, it did.
36.
We'll see if it holds up on day one.
Sung Jae-in making a run at it.
This for Birdie at 14.
Yes.
Very good.
Some good scoring going on this afternoon.
Normally U.S. Open afternoons
are a lot more difficult than mornings.
Particularly one that was as benign as this morning.
What we've ever seen when you hold out
for an albatross earlier at the fourth.
But it's been anything but smooth sailing since.
But this for Birdie to get one back.
Set up with a brilliant tee shot there
to get it that close with the right to left shape
that he's got on his golf ball.
Alvaro, the younger brother, also making the field.
Miliano Grillo with his second at the 10th.
Yeah, another South American.
Tough pin.
Really tough pin here.
He's done well.
He's done really well and it's gonna get better.
Nice, Miliano.
Muy bueno.
Gotta give that to him.
And Anthony Pavone from good range here
to get to two under.
Yeah, big performance in the U.S. Open last year.
Pinehurst played brilliantly.
He's been disappointing this year.
He's got it now.
From 161, launching this very high,
cutting it back against the right to left wind.
Should be right up his alley bones.
There's a good iron shot from Scotty Sheffler.
There you go.
And with eight and nine looming, that's a big birdie.
Rasmus Mirgaard-Peterson's third shot at the fourth.
A little eagle drop in.
And that gets Mirgaard-Peterson to three under
just like that.
The man from Denmark, 25 years old.
I expect him to hit this within 15 feet.
He's got some wizardry around the greens.
And it is probably about 15 feet.
He's gonna be savvy-esque.
At 17.
For birdie.
Two in a row.
Yes.
Well, you know, when he putts,
and when he's putting well, it looks so easy.
And when he's missing putts, it looks so hard.
The whole time.
Yeah, you see that little forward press
holding the finish there.
These front pins are really tricky.
Chooses the distance on.
Good looking line here.
How good is that?
More birdie.
Biggie.
As we get back out to the 10th.
And Hovland from 166 yards.
Another player who's a fader of the ball.
Licking his chops at that right pin.
Oh, look at these two shots.
Yeah, Bones, that's birdies at nine and 10
for Victor Hovland,
who just seems to have finally found a gear.
Group is gonna play this hole in two under
with Hovland's birdie.
Morikawa just a formality
and Sheffield able to save his three.
So the.
Speed, fairway at one.
This view sandwich on the way, Brad.
Yeah, that should stop now, yeah.
He powered that drive down there for speed
up the hill here and got a nice teacher
and Dustin Johnson's part that stayed high.
So keep it inside the hole.
Four birdies for Jordan Spieth
in the first 10 holes.
Unfortunately had three bogeys
on that start to right to left.
We know how fast that hill is from
the right side of the green down,
so this will break hard left as it ends here.
He's got the putter moving well today.
Look at that bogey free Terry look.
So we said the wind wasn't
picking up. Look at this exactly.
This is the normal direction.
Back into the players here.
This is going to be tough
to manage the spin as well.
Taking it way up in the air.
Will it? Come on now.
OK, holding on a roll right now.
Birdies at 910.
This is second and 11.
I had about 3 feet of putts the last
two holes both for birdies total.
Another one, but those shots on 910 at 11.
Never a doubt three in a row for
this is all about spin control.
Little flat area now has been extended
by Gil Hansen at left hand side.
Put some brakes spin control well played.
First to touch 5 under par.
Many thought we would not
see anyone at five under par.
He's looking right at it like he
wants to hit that fade up into that
wind which is what he would love to do.
But at this point he may say what the
heck I might as well go flag hunting.
They usually had to all of the US.
Oh no, it doesn't, but that.
Is. Right where he was aiming beautiful.
He knows exactly what this putt does.
For the first birdie of the day,
just Thomas makes it happen.
Alright, you bet there we go.
Our first birdie for the group.
See Billy Ray, I told you there'd be birdies.
It's just 126 and he can see
the flagstick actually.
So one of the few guys where he's
driven that can see it.
I've taken advantage of the tremendous
tee shot excellent distance control.
I may set up the first birdie of the round,
but couldn't ask for a
better place to putt from.
Yep, confident looking stroke
there by John Robbins.
Finally found one first
birdie of the day for ROM.
Will Henley over at the 4th
the par five this for birdie?
People fancy him this way though.
One in Bay Hill on a very
difficult course setup.
Might be sneaking a little right.
Oh, landing the rough and
kicked to the fairway.
Definitely get home in two of this
five power beautiful tee shot.
Bringing it in from right to left.
That is majestic.
The land at that soft for Millie 250.
That's why I'm just to offer.
Your guard Peterson playing great as well.
Just three off the lead.
Yeah, his coach is a friend of mine.
Andreas Cali flew over from
Denmark to watch his player.
Oh, that's what he taught him.
Coaches like I'm glad you mentioned my name.
You see these long grip here,
so that's that left arm lock.
Couple that with the saw grip.
Gets complicated at times,
doesn't it?
The boy I don't know how you invent this stuff,
and now they have grips made for it.
Yeah, you're on the back nine.
Cameron Young gets one to go as well.
So there's schools and opportunities
out there to be made.
Speaking of Burns for Birdie at 14.
Yeah. Burns is found it again.
Remember to go out to that hot start.
Day here to five speed the approach.
Settle down.
Amazing how much spin some
of these guys are getting.
Come off a very close miss at
the last hole of the part 5.
Upset about the spin doesn't matter.
The 6th hole and Dustin Johnson
at this long part 3204.
Could hunt this down with that
shape of left or right.
He's got in here.
Let's see what the yardage right?
It does. Yeah, do a little hot
and I would say indeed he's gotta
hunt a little bit now in 90th place.
And I would say Paul,
the old school way to hit a putt
like this would be off the toe,
but these guys don't do that
anymore right out of the center.
Go Dustin Johnson trying to be a
part of the story again at Oak Mile.
Hello for Birdie at the first
step to making the turn back up
the hill from behind the whole.
Yeah, why is one playing
easier than in the past?
Cameron Young missed the fairway.
It's been an adventure for him at this par 5.
This is 4th shot.
But he's going to save it.
And he's going to stay at two under
and the lies can be a little bit
better sometimes to it.
Chris Kirk can do on the T here at
the part 313th a moment ago we can draw.
We know that he likes the left side of
the tee box here that helps swing it in.
Oh, just carried it on.
Brilliant landed on the fringe.
Staring at it, another good looking shot.
Excellent, can I get inside you?
Not quite.
What a strike pretty good line here,
and that's got his attention.
Oh yeah, great line gotta sit.
Hang on. Yeah, that's pretty good.
Fall through here.
He's going to try to use that leading
edge to stab it in the ground.
Very nice.
Not been happy if you didn't
get that up and down,
but what a drive there by Koepke.
At plus 2.
After he battled back to even par
with those three birdies in a row,
coming off two bogeys in the last three holes.
But he's back on track absolutely again
with the flag over the right hand side.
The camera, the green left to right.
It would have been appealing shot to Victor.
He needs to get back some of that momentum.
That's how you do it.
Victor could bounce back a bit of a yo-yo day.
Well, boy, you said the second shot golf course.
This man's hit a number of
good ones today, Billy Ray.
Yeah, hanging live here 184.
His rhythm is golf swing has been spot on today.
Oh, don't go long.
Now that's going to get better watch this.
Oh, that's only going to get better and better.
Yeah, went over Koepke for back to back birdies
to end his first round.
That looks good.
Brooks Koepke is back in the hunt at another major.
It's only the first round.
Speaking of good looks, chance for birdie here.
Excellent.
Just a little bit right to left.
Better than number three.
Remember he made a pretty decent run
at the Country Club back when Matt Fitzpatrick won.
And now he's made a decent run here coming home.
No problem.
McCarthy ends it with a three even par for back
and back to back birdies for McCarthy.
Came back a little further into the bunker.
So he's got an opportunity.
Sounded pretty good.
Really did.
Oh, what a shot.
What a shot.
That's another really well struck iron by Victor Hovland.
23 players have been in that bunker today.
Not one of them have hit the green.
He had that section of the play
where he was just absolutely striping it.
This is a good looking putt by Hovland.
Of course he's going to make it.
Fully said this for par.
He was in the green side bunker at this par for 14th
Oh, wow.
Miragard Peterson staying in a tie for second.
Colin Morikawa.
You see he was just having that extra little bend
in his posture.
He was working on that last week or so.
On where he has made his two birdies today.
They came out the third and the 10th.
So Colin Morikawa ends with a nice one.
Frankie Harris over at 14.
His third shot.
So obviously in trouble off the tee.
Playing a tick under 400 yards, but wow.
We'll go and save his par after all that.
That's gutsy.
That'll do just nicely.
I'll hold it.
Yeah, and he can definitely get that ball out there
and has good control of his golf ball right now it seems.
Nice to see Bud Colley having a good season.
Playing some better golf.
Yeah, that went in.
JT Poston hitting his third at the ninth.
Look at this touch.
Oh, come on, JT.
Rattling it home.
Started with a birdie and he's going to end with a birdie.
See if the goodwill to the young kid
pays off making a long one to save par here.
Oh, it looks good.
Oh, yes.
There it is.
Now you're talking.
Where's the kid?
I bet that kid's gotta be so happy he made that putt.
Where's the kid?
James Nicholas for birdie.
Happy to get into his first major
than James Nicholas, New York City native.
