Guardrail Stitch | How to Crochet

Hello everyone, I'm Sarah of Rich Textures Crochet and welcome. Today we're going to learn how to crochet the guardrail stitch which you can see here in front of you. This is a fairly easy stitch to work. It's only a few rows as far as the repeat is concerned. Has wonderful drape and does have a little bit of stretch to it working in both directions. This is the front of your work where all the texture is focused and then the back. Today for the tutorial I'm going to be using a little bit of a worsted weight yarn. This is the Heather Lee yarn by WeCrochet as well as a five millimeter crochet hook. Let's grab our hooks and yarn and get started. Now our stitch today is worked in rows. We're going to start by making a slip knot. We're then going to work a foundation chain and your foundation chain today can be any odd number of stitches. Today I'm going to go ahead and chain 21. Once you have worked your foundation chain we're going to begin row one by working a single crochet into the second chain from your hook and then single crochet into each stitch all the way across. At the end of row one you're going to chain one and turn your work. Now for row two we're going to begin by working a half double crochet into your first stitch. Your chain one does not count as a stitch. So half double crochet into that first stitch. You're then going to skip the next stitch and work two half double crochets all into the next stitch. Skip the next stitch and work two half double crochet stitches into the next. You're going to repeat this all the way across. Skip the next stitch, two half double crochets into your next stitch all the way across until you have one stitch remaining. Once you come all the way across at the end of row two and have one stitch remaining you're going to finish off by working a half double crochet into the top of that final stitch. Chain one and turn your work. We're now going to work a row of single crochet stitches. Our first single crochet is going to be worked in the top of our first stitch. Then you're going to work single crochet stitches in the third loop of your half double crochet all the way across until one stitch remains. To find the third loop of your stitch you're going to look at the back of the half double crochet which is in front of us. You will see a loop running along just under the front loop of that stitch. This loop that is running horizontally along under that front loop is your third loop. So you're going to insert your hook under that lower bottom loop only, yarn over, draw up a loop and complete your single crochet. You're going to repeat this all the way across until you have one stitch remaining. Simply work one single crochet in the third loop of each stitch. When you come across and have one stitch remaining you're going to finish off row three with a single crochet just into the top of your final stitch. Chain one and turn your work. Now for the rest of the pattern you're simply going to repeat your rows two and three. Your row two began with the single double crochet into the first stitch, skip the next stitch and then work two half double crochets into the next. Repeat that all the way across. Half double crochet in your final stitch, chain one, turn your work and work that row of single crochets into your third loop. That is all there is to working this wonderful guardrail stitch.
