Selena Gomez dropped in to Hits Radio Breakfast with Fleur East, Greg and James to chat about her new music and the new album coming early next year. But James couldn't resist trying to make her his new best friend and we got distracted by her new stunt training!
Hello.
Yay.
How are you?
I'm doing great.
I'm back in the UK.
It feels wonderful.
Selina, you're single.
It makes me really emotional.
And I want to give you a hug and wrap you in a blanket and just talk about boys forever.
So when are you free to do that?
I think the point of the song is so that I really don't need to sit around and talk about
boys.
I think that the song is meant to be what it is, which was very much my story and then
wrapped up in a way that says I actually needed all of this to be okay on my own.
Yeah.
And to be honest, I think that is probably one of the most makes it one of the most relatable
songs of the year.
Thank you.
I really appreciate that.
Thank you.
The song is so beautiful.
It's all about like self discovery.
And why did you think it was important to reflect that in your new music?
You know, I think that it had been four years since I've done personal music.
I've done a lot of features and I've had so much fun doing that.
But it almost would have felt inauthentic to me if I if I didn't acknowledge the pain
that I was going through.
And I thought it was.
I mean, I do.
I think it's fair that I have my say and I claim my side of the story because no one's
going to steal my voice away no matter what.
Yes.
Oh, I felt that.
Yes, girl.
We've got SG2 on January the 10th is out, right?
Yeah.
So I want to know, are we going to be getting some more truth like that?
Yeah.
No, trust me, it'll be full of that.
I, you know, I'm I'm excited that this song did as well as it did.
And I'm glad that it helped others in a big way.
I've received so many messages about women and men going through things that are really
difficult and that the song meant a lot to them.
So the rest of the record is about vulnerability.
It's a little more, yes, about a breakup and more attitude behind it.
And there's playful songs.
All of the album you hear from beginning to end.
If you listen to every single lyric of the album, they all have meaning.
They're almost even cooler than the tracks.
The words and so much.
I love that.
I need to talk to you about Look at Her Now because I was listening to it the other day
on my headphones and strutting down the street to it.
It's such an empowering song.
I wanted to know what's your like go to party song?
Like what gets you on the dance floor?
What makes you feel sassy?
Oh, that's so hard.
I would say it's me going maybe some Whitney Houston or.
Yes.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Something fun and loud.
I don't know how to explain it.
I'm sure I have a million songs.
Yeah.
Kylie Minogue.
Probably a lot of like.
Yeah.
I love Madonna.
Let's see.
Sissy Panastan.
I don't know.
I got to say I have my freaking playlist here.
I just don't even.
I mean, I've got the tunes Selena.
So if you do time, babe.
I mean, I don't know.
I.
Oh, I listen to Sicko Mode by Travis Scott.
Oh, yes.
That's a good one.
Let's see.
Any sort of Drake's got me going.
Yeah.
Even some 70s vibe if I feel that, you know.
You know, like staying alive or, you know, I want to be your lover.
Yeah.
I love that.
As usually.
We're excited that you're back.
But you did have a little bit of break from music.
What did you go up to on your on your time off from your breakaway?
So first, I wasn't really ready to release music.
And I think personally, that was just I'm glad that I said that,
because I ended up at the very last minute of the due date of the album
ended up, you know, creating writing three amazing songs that are
automated automatically on the album.
And I just didn't feel ready.
So some things happened in between.
That was personal.
And I needed to take some time off for me to figure it out.
Other things.
I was just in the studio.
I did a bunch of different workout exercises,
like for some reason I tried like stunt training or that kind of stuff.
It was it was actually very nice and felt good.
Other than that, I've had meetings.
Yeah.
You found your strength.
You're amazing.
You're so honestly are so inspiring.
And what I think is so wonderful is that you're so honest and real with
your fan base and in your music as well.
And it really comes across from your Instagram and the way you talk.
So, yeah, thanks.
I think you're doing amazing things in the world.
I appreciate that.
What kind of stunts can you do then, Selena?
I kind of learned a little bit of everything.
I learned how to block certain moves.
I've actually like taken flips and have landed in a way where I'm like
able to avoid someone.
I look, it sounds a lot cooler than I look.
So it sounds cool, but I have some funny videos where I just look
ridiculous, though.
But I found it was a release.
It's a release.
Yeah, I love that.
I'd love to see those videos.
So you're the queen of strange snacks, mostly pickle-based,
interestingly.
Popcorn dipped in pickle juice, Reese's Pieces and pickles.
What are you enjoying at the moment?
Are they still pickle-based?
Is that still your vibe?
What do I like now?
I think, you know, on the bag here or in my bag on the way here,
I had M&M's.
I had Bounty bars.
I had, what was it?
What are those little gold, you know, they're like gold,
wrapped in gold, and then they have the brown bottom.
Werther's Originals.
Rolos.
I love that we're all guessing.
Everyone's like, what?
I don't, I can't hear you.
So I, nevermind, I don't know.
Can I make a British snack recommendation if you like pickle stuff?
While you're here, you've got to try Pickled Onion Monster Munch.
Trust me.
You'll be bringing a box back with you.
Trust me.
Are those crackers or something?
They're crisps.
Chips.
Okay.
Game changer, yeah, chips.
Okay, okay.
I saw on your Instagram that you have an entire post dedicated to pasta.
So what does your favorite pasta say about you?
We're really interested to know.
Are you kind of linguine girl, penne, or straight up bolognese?
I mean, I'm kind of all over the place, but the fact,
this is so funny to me.
I get asked a lot about this picture randomly.
So I was looking at my Instagram, and there's a picture that is like,
it's a selfie, and it's, you know, when I look good and stuff,
and I thought it was nice, and it was, it was whatever.
But then I posted that damn spaghetti picture,
and that had the most traction I've had in so long.
I was like, well, hopefully my album gets this much attention.
But, um.
Just made the cover a big bowl of spaghetti.
Exactly, exactly.
No, I, I, um, I love pasta.
Love, love, love.
So, parpadelli with some sort of mushroom sauce or cream.
I love just the pepper and olive oil with butter.
That's kind of my vibe, too.
It's everything, to be honest.
I heard you're a huge fan of a show called Shark Tank,
which is the American version.
We have it here called Dragon's Den.
I know.
So if you were to go on that, what would your pitch be?
Would you have a business idea that you would take on to pitch?
You know, I've actually had multiple moments of writing things down
that would potentially work.
They don't really make sense.
I, um, I thought that there would be a cool way to put your, like, iPad in your shower
so you could just watch something.
Like, honestly, not great ideas.
But I did get to go to a taping.
Oh, wow.
And I got to see how it works.
It was really crazy.
They explained it to me.
All of it was, you know, they didn't see who it was until they walked into that room.
It was cool.
And it was you with a pasta album.
An album dedicated to tracks about pasta.
Maybe that'll work.
So I saw that you went to see Frozen 2.
I did.
With your bestie, your little sister.
Yeah.
And you look so cute in matching dresses.
But I just want to know, who is your favorite character?
Because for me, it's a very clear runaway winner.
It's this guy, Oaken.
Woohoo!
Big summer blowout.
Woohoo!
Big summer blowout.
Are you into him?
What is that?
What? You don't know him?
From Frozen?
Yeah.
No.
Oh, my God.
Okay, we'll just move on.
Sorry.
I don't know if I really remember the first one.
But the second one was beautiful.
And my sister, obviously, you know, she's like, I'm this.
I'm Elsa and you're Anna.
And so, like, we've, you know, that's kind of my role.
But Olaf is hilarious.
Yeah.
No, he's great.
Let's end with a question about the album.
What is your favorite track coming through?
There is a song that has a feature on it.
And I can't say who, but it is the last track on the album.
And it is very, very good.
I mean, are we allowed to guess?
Nope.
Actually, yes, because I don't think you'd guess.
Is it Travis Scott?
Nope.
Is it Olaf from Frozen?
Nope.
Is it your sister?
No, actually, that would be amazing, but no.
All right, well, we'll find out soon.
Thanks so much.
Thank you.
Have a nice Christmas.
You too.
We love you.
