Everyone, don't you want to talk to a Korean person, but you don't know how to ask a question, how to answer, or how to react?
You're curious about how Koreans talk in real situations, not in movies or dramas, right?
So I prepared a special content for you.
I invited a guest to talk to you in Korean.
Today's guest is Mr. Hoon.
He has been teaching Korean since 2019 and making Korean contents.
He is a great and wonderful Korean teacher.
I'll put English subtitles at the top and Korean subtitles at the bottom, so listen and practice together.
Then it will definitely help you to naturally communicate with Koreans.
Shall we get started?
Hello.
Hello, morning teacher.
Yes, Mr. Hoon. How have you been?
I've been well.
Oh, good.
I thought it would be nice to talk about various things today, so I prepared a seat.
Thank you.
Yes, then I was originally curious about why you became a Korean teacher. Can you tell me?
I really liked to make others happy.
Yes.
I did a lot of things to do that.
I took pictures, photographed, and did YouTube.
But the best thing was that everyone was really happy when I taught Korean, so I'm still doing that.
Oh, then how did you start as a Korean teacher?
I had a roommate in 2019.
Yes.
My roommate said,
Hey, you're good at English, so teach me Korean in English.
Yes.
So I tried, and it went well.
Then, while you were teaching, were there any memorable students?
My first student was an American student.
Yes.
It's my first time, so I'm very nervous.
Do you like classes? Will your Korean skills improve?
But that student went on a trip to Korea.
Yes.
After listening to my course, I went on a trip to Korea.
Yes.
He was praised for his good pronunciation.
Yes.
So the Korean tour guide who was with me said,
Oh.
Yes.
I was so happy when I heard that.
Oh, really?
How long did that student teach you?
Three weeks.
Really? Wow.
You must have taught him very hard for three weeks.
Yes, really.
Are you still in touch with that student?
I haven't heard from him since then.
Then, how long has the oldest student you've been in touch with been?
I have a friend named Jillian who is about a year and ten months old.
Oh, yes.
She's an American friend, and we went on a trip to Korea together last year.
I opened a tour, and she attended it.
We talked a lot on the bus, talked at cafes, and talked while eating.
Then, did you speak in Korean or English when you talked?
Basically, I spoke in English, but in the middle, I decided to speak in Korean, so I did a little.
Oh, did you do well?
Oh, she was pretty good.
Oh, really?
Aren't you most proud of that?
Yes, I think it's really amazing.
Right?
Then, what do you think is the most important thing when teaching Korean?
I think it's good to talk as much as possible.
Because even if you learn Korean, you can only use it when you talk to a friend.
But if you don't speak, you can't use it, so I try to speak as much as possible.
I want to talk about something personal.
When I first met you last year, you lived in Japan.
Yes.
So I'm curious why you decided to live in Japan.
It's the same as students studying Korean.
For example, you like K-pop, you like K-dramas, you like Korean culture more and more, and you want to go to Korea.
I really like J-pop, and I really like Japanese, so I wanted to go to Japan.
Oh, I didn't know.
Then how many years have you been there?
One year?
About two years.
Two years?
Oh, you've been there longer than I thought.
Yes, that's right.
How did you feel when you arrived in Japan?
I was so happy, so excited, and scared.
Oh, you were scared?
Yes.
Why?
Because Japanese is so difficult, I couldn't speak it.
I was scared to go to a convenience store, and I was scared to go to a restaurant.
Then did you use Japanese right away? Or did you use Korean or English at first?
I only used Japanese.
Oh, but you still used Japanese.
Really slowly.
Yes.
But did you still take good care of me?
No?
Everyone spoke so fast, so I was very lonely.
Oh, really?
So when you went to Japan and lived in Japan, did you change your Japanese skills?
At first, it was really low.
Yes.
Japanese skills seem to go up like this.
Oh, like stairs?
No, it doesn't go like this.
After 6 months, it went up like this.
Yes.
After 6 months, it went up like this again.
Oh, were there activities there that you tried to speak a lot?
Yes, I went to a lot of language exchanges.
I met a lot of Japanese people who wanted to learn Korean and Korean people who wanted to learn Japanese and talked a lot.
Do a lot of people come to those meetings?
Yes, a lot of people came.
Really? When I lived in Seoul, I went to a Korean-English exchange meeting.
There were a lot of Koreans.
So I went to speak English, but I ended up speaking Korean.
Since I was talking to Koreans in English, I wondered if this would help.
No, right?
It's awkward.
Right? You seem to be very interested in languages.
You speak English and Japanese now.
I wonder if you have a language you want to learn.
I'm trying to learn French.
Oh, really? French.
Oh, why?
I have a French friend.
Yes.
I really like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
Oh, the Eiffel Tower.
Yes.
Have you ever been to France?
I lived in France for about a month.
Oh, when?
I lived in June 2018.
Oh, before you went to Japan.
Yes.
Oh, how was it? France, Paris.
It was so pretty, and the weather was nice.
Were you in a place where you could see the Eiffel Tower in Paris?
No, I was in a really small, faraway place.
Oh, really? Then what did you do for a month?
I took a walk in the park, drank wine, and drank beer.
Oh, you really just traveled.
Yes.
Right? Then you must have used a lot of English.
How is it when you use English in France?
Do people understand and communicate a lot?
No.
No?
I don't know if they don't speak English on purpose, or if they can't speak English.
When I go to a store in the neighborhood, they don't speak English.
Oh, really? So you don't speak English when you go to a local area, not a tourist attraction?
Yes.
Then if I ask you a question in English, you don't answer?
Because you came to France.
Lastly, if you have a goal or dream, can you tell me?
My dream is to make Korean a universal language.
Wow, that's a big dream.
Yes, that's right.
When you travel abroad, you can't communicate.
Yes, that's right.
For example, I can't speak English to an Indonesian or a French person,
but I can speak Korean to a French person, and I can speak Korean to an Indonesian person,
so we can communicate.
Oh, I see.
Is there a reason why you dreamed of that?
I like to make others happy.
I think students who learn Korean are really happy.
That's right, that's right.
So I want to convey that happiness a lot.
Oh, I see. I hope that dream comes true.
Fighting!
Yes, let's say fighting together.
Yes.
Yes, that's great. Then I had a lot of fun talking to you today.
If we have a chance next time, I hope we can talk like this again.
Good.
Yes, then have a good day today.
See you next time.
Thank you.
Yes, thank you. Goodbye.
Yes.
Yes, the conversation with Mr. Hoon is over.
It was my first interview, so I was a little nervous.
Did you enjoy it?
I want to teach you natural Korean expressions that real Koreans use when talking,
not the hard expressions you learn at school.
That way, when you come to Korea or talk to Koreans,
you can talk naturally.
I'd like to make a real video like this next time.
